Joining brics is not the main reason why Malaysia ringgit appreciate. It’s because strong fundamentals and strong economic growth. Also other factors like US expectation of cutting rate in September and also high foreign investor flocking in Malaysia especially semiconductor and data centre. Also government measure to cut subsidies to reduce budget deficit put Malaysia in an attractive position to be invested

The appreciation of the Ringgit like most other currencies is mainly due to the weakening of the USD which appears strong on the surface but is weakening in reality. Prolonged high interest rates can lead to recession in the US which it can ill afford! The decline of the USD in the near and long term is imminent due to dedollarisation which is gaining momentum as central banks are moving away from USD in cross border trade. When all these surplus USD flows back to US shores, you can imagine what will happen? When too much money is virculating/floating in the system can cause inflation or hyperinflation at its worst? Hence, Fed rate cut is only good as temporary measure to boost spending to counter potential recession? M'sia joining BRICS is a good thing. It can expand it's market and trade using local currency - thus saving huge sums of currency conversion fees & charges! Being less dependant on the USD can skirt US sanctions. The high US interest rates had increased the costs and burden of many emerging markets whose sovereign loans are denominated in USD. 😊

Appreciation is owing to Bank Negara force local companies to bring back foreign fund back to Malaysia, cutting subsidies, some FDI, joining of BRICS, and USD weakening a little. However, I'm not sure how long this strength will sustain. If politicians continue to be short sighted and fighting continue for their own pockets then this may not last. The sudden rise of the RM (Ringgit Malaysia) is due to several factors: - The "forward contract" strategy in the forex market - Better-than-expected GDP for Q2, 2024 - Inflow of investments into Malaysia - GLCs (Government-Linked Companies) are instructed to repatriate foreign currencies into the country - Weak economic indicators in the United States Some say that attributing the strengthening of the RM solely to the weakness of the US economy is not entirely accurate, as the RM has also risen against the SGD (Singapore Dollar), Euro, IDR (Indonesian Rupiah), THB (Thai Baht), and GBP (British Pound).

Malaysia has tons of natural resources, oil/gas, tin, wood, both high-tech and foundational basic industries, educated work force. How does its currency lose out to neighboring Singapore? Easy answer: Its politicians have been raping the country since forever. Imagine a country being raped and stripped of its wealth consistently and it can still hold up its economy, can you imagine the amount of resources the country has? Indonesia and Thailand has more landmass and population, but how much of its landmass is rich in resources and how much of its population is skilled and/or productive? Think about it. Msia would be a first world power like Korea if every politician lined their pockets less. I'm sure SG politicians do the same, but much less, more goes to the country development

Mr.Tan, thank you for this video. It's great to educate the public about these issues. I'm a retired US stock broker who still trades in my own US portfolio but I also trade in Bursa. The US Feds will cut rates in the last quarter of 2024 which would help the Ringgit. There was talk of Intel bringing manufacturing to Malaysia which would have formed a strong partnership for chip manufacturing and AI in Malaysia, strengthening the Ringgit but I doubt Intel would want to negotiate with a country looking to join BRICS. I hope BRICS doesn't happen since I live in Malaysia full time. I would love to see Malaysia prosper. Malaysia banks seem aligned to Chinese banks, which do not have a great track record of protecting customers or helping citizens grow wealth. If people can grow investments, savings, the entire country would prosper because people have more money to spend. Economics 101. Malaysia seems bent on providing more debt services instead of encouraging people to grow wealth or teaching about investients. But, it does not seem like politicians win elections based on their economic knowledge. 😜Great video!

Agree with the guy in this video, Malaysia should develop a strategy to strengthen its currency the ringgit while still maintaining successful exports and imports. Relying solely on a weak currency to boost exports is not a sustainable approach, as it can have negative effects like increased import costs and inflation. Instead, the country should look for ways to enhance its economic fundamentals, such as improving productivity, diversifying its economy, or adding value to its products, so that it can support a stronger ringgit without harming trade. The goal is to achieve a balance where both a strong currency and successful international trade can coexist.

Economic books provide the reasons for currency exchange values. Bank of Japan (BOJ) is the master in currency manipulation and also the Chinese Yuan have learnt the government interventions. MYR value is a relative point with USD Interest rates and exports. At the moment MY Macro Management in Public Debt, exports, Inward Investments and many more is encouraging and more to do. Productivity in MY is very low. MYR can strengthen a little more but MY still needs a cheap currency for export trade. Dr M value of MYR is probably correct for the moment.

❤❤❤❤ According to the IMF, Malaysia's Purchasing Power Parity GDP is USD $1.307 Trillion and this makes Malaysia the 30th richest country in the world. The Purchasing Power Parity GDP or PPPGDP is a much better indicator of a country's economy than the crude Nominal GDP as what you can buy locally with a given amount of local money is far more relevant than what you can get with the same amount in foreign currency in a distant foreign land. There is a great discrepancy between the PPPGDP and the nominal GDP in Malaysia and this SUGGESTS THAT THE MALAYSIAN RINGGIT IS GROSSLY UNDERVALUED. Everything is dirt cheap in Malaysia ! 😂😂😂

Additionally, very important point that BRICS will launch their own currency called R5 in the sumit happening in October month this year. Russia is very much interested and eagerly pushing to get R5 launched as soon as possible. therefore once launched US dollar will depreciate as the oil trade will start happening in R5 currency since Saudi Russia are part of BRICS+.

The recent appreciation of the ringgit can be attributed to short-term external factors. Malaysia's potential decision to join BRICS is unlikely to significantly improve its economic prospects, as the current BRICS members-comprising mostly developing or economically struggling nations-have not shown substantial economic advancement through the alliance alone. In fact, aligning with BRICS could potentially exacerbate Malaysia's economic challenges. The ongoing geopolitical tensions between the two global superpowers, the United States and China, could place Malaysia in a difficult position, as the country may find itself caught between competing interests. This could lead to economic instability, trade disruptions, or diplomatic pressures that negatively impact Malaysia’s long-term growth trajectory. Additionally, BRICS membership may not offer the same level of trade, investment, or technological benefits that Malaysia could achieve through stronger ties with more developed economies.

Savings from removing subsidies should either be used to eliminate hard core poverty, or invest in the future (i.e. result in profits) and not 'buy votes' / further bloat the civil service which is a cost center and over staffed for most parts, if compared to many other countries. Otherwise we risk stoking inflation for little to no benefit. More money supply without corresponding increase in real value / productivity gains just means higher inflation for everyone & foreign investors leaving M'sia.

Well! Ringgit have being falling since Mahathir became Prime Minister from 1981 - RM1.03 to present 2024- RM3.40 against Sing dollar. Mismanagement of the economy and government institutions.cronyism, corruption and incompetence greedy politicians of Mahathir era and his subsequent incapable and scandalous successors lead to further sliding of the Ringgit over the years. Let’s hope the era of Malaysia’s lost decades is over from now. PM Anwar must strengthen the economy further and implement massive reforms for long term of our country. Years of wastage and corruption are difficult to overcome as it has become deep rooted. However, Anwar must persevere for the sake of our country which we all love, 🇲🇾.

Of the 3 biggest brics country - 1 is at war (and seemingly not doing well within it's own borders), 2 have bad economic problems (both under various forms of western sanctions), 1 is looking to build up it's own economy to take over mantel of the worlds factory - hardly motivation to invest in any other country than it's own ... So joining brics will only endanger investment from non brics country. Know any of these who had previously announced investment in this region before our brics announcement?

easy reason why. because malaysia not on money printing economy. budget is balanced, unlike the US with their 125% gomen debt, malaysia seems heading lower towards 60% public debt from previously 68% just a few years ago. and malaysia must get rid of those politicians like najib and moyedin who likes to print money just to add more numbers to gdp. we must get rid of those politicians going forward. no s2pid politicians controlling malaysia monetary policies, that is the simple recipe.
