The dude was playing a lot of hands, having a good time, bringing action to the game. He was an obvious rec who made a mistake...chop was a legit and classy move for that specific player. I think most people learn a lesson from positivity not negativity. Just my opinion. Thanks for the story Lex!

I would say a chop makes sense if it made the dude happy, but he was still annoyed that he should have the whole pot. It'd be different if his cards were recoverable, or he'd flashed them to someone on the table. I'd probably just give the guy a rebate of a few hundred, it's the qualitatively the same as a chop...more than he deserves and less than he wants.

Solid by you. Trust your instincts. Consistent winning and profitable. A chop is not a issue for a true pro to that type of player. A farmer knows you don’t shoot the cows, you milk them. The return in massive respect by the “pro” community and value of your reputation is priceless. Sometimes that type of decision helps encourage newer players to come back or come out and play. Otherwise the tables are full of farmers with no cows to milk. GL friend

Lesson learned. I am very much down for the classy move. I play with a guy who will claim a hand he doesn't have, like "Straight" or "Set, " before showing his cards, hoping that someone will muck their winning hand. What a tool. We were all new at some point playing poker, you did right here. You helped him learn a lesson and he will probably never make that mistake again. I had a situation where I bluffed and when she called I said "Do you have a straight?" She thought I said I had a straight and mucked her hand (See the jerk lines above). She mucked her cards saying she had a set. She called a large bluff on the river and misheard what I said. I did what you did and chopped the pot. Way to keep the game, classy sir! First time watching. I go to Florida on occasion, it would be nice to play poker with you someday!

Same thing happened to me when I was new playing 1/2. I rivered a one card gutter with a jack with a pair of aces with AJ. Didn’t even see the straight. Opponent had AK I had AJ and folded thinking his two pair beat mine. I showed person next to me and threw cards into the muck and he was like you had a straight! I tried to grab my cards but the female dealer went off on me saying I can’t touch dead cards. I wish I would have got to chop that pot atleast. I respect the chop Lex, class move!

On the fence about this one. I've taught poker etiquette to a lot of new players and tell them when it comes to the showdown you have one thing to do and one only - turn your cards over immediately. Lex was called and didn't do that; he said "You're good" twice. The rec player had three options at that point: 1. Tell Lex he's called his bet and ask him to show his cards. 2. Turn his own cards over 3. Ask Lex or the dealer - is that a muck? If Lex or the dealer said yes, then he takes the pot without showing He should not muck his hand without doing one of those things, yet he did! In Lex's position I would've immediately turned my cards ove, and we would have known if he had a pair or not. While it's highly unlikely he would have hero-called with nothing better than AT, the fact remains he mucked his hand without showing anyone, and on that basis I believe Lex gets the whole pot. No chop, expensive but very valuable lesson.

Classy move Lex. I would have had to get a visual of the 8's to give him any of it. The rules that remain the same from casino to casino, I dont have any give on no matter what confusion there is. If you're comfortable enough w the game that you are risking the money, it's on you to know the universal rules. Many dealers would not let me reach into the muck to turn his cards over (as they are told not to allow it) so if they stop me from doing so, I am walking with the pot. That said, I don't play $5-$10 but 3-5 times a year and I am not as invested in rep. You're a smart and kind hearted guy.

That’s very generous of you to do in that tricky situation. I’ve had the same thing happen and chopped it as well. Being a rec player I think you made a very generous deal. I’ve played poker since I was 14yrs old. In 20yrs I’ve only done what he did once or twice and didn’t get the pot chopped or my bet back from the other player which I also feel is fine. You being who you are and the pot not being a big one I only would ask the question what if the pot was 5k or 10-15k what decision would be made.

The one thing that would've made me keep the pot, was no one ever saw his cards. 1) instead of saying "you're good " try saying "Ace high" . It still provides clarity to your opponent without giving useful info to the table. "Ace high " statement can be AK down to A2. It also doesn't reveal suits. Chopping pot was best decision IMO. 2) QQ was interesting hand, didn't like the way you played it tho. You seemed to hope UTG would do a limp reraise after your call but if he did where would that leave you? Also just calling here opens up the hand to being multi-multi way which we don't want of course. Another great vlog 👍.

Lex - cool blogs - interesting situation w the tipsy reg. Totally familiar with the “you’re good” modus operandi and the reason for it. In Panama we say “me ganaste” which is “you win” lol. My take is his beer soaked mind got stuck at the perception that you had already relinquished your hand when you said “you’re good” - and even though he didn’t want to (or didn’t know he had to after your comment) show his hand - ONCE YOU DO SHOW, in a way that forces him to show a winning hand - and he didn’t. It IS somewhat weird, provided if you had decided to muck YOUR HAND FIRST after saying “you’re good”- he would have won the pot(which is something Ive seen half the time - players say you’re good and muck immediately)….nice gesture to chop pot.

Two things…1) poker etiquette does exist at 1/2, 100%. It may not be as consistent as with higher stakes, but it’s certainly there. People don’t just learn poker etiquette once they get to 5/10 and higher. 2) It’s two pair, not two pairs (pair is already plural). That aside, I like your vlogs. That's crazy the same exact thing happened to me last night. A recreational player limped in middle position and I raise from the SB with AQ, the player calls and its a very dry runout. All three streets are checked through, and I had just won a similar hand against this player with K high, so I figured there's a very good chance my hand is good. After the river goes check check, I say " I have Ace high", he looks a little confused and after I turn over my hand he takes a second and mucks his cards. After the cards are already being shuffled he tells the player next to him that he a had a pair, he looked extremely embarrassed and confused. Luckily this was a very small pot and he handled it very well. But in my opinion if you sit down to play a game and you don't understand all of the rules, that is on you, and in your specific situation I think you should just keep the pot and not feel bad about it all. He mucked his cards, you win.

When you started the story, I thought it was going to be that you said, “you’re good,” and then he mucked straight away thinking that that meant you already conceded the pot. If that were the case, you should even consider giving the whole pot for the accidental angle. But that’s not what happened. You did (eventually) table your hand, and he never tabled his. It is possible that he actually called you down with a worse A high. You have no way of knowing he’s not lying. So I’d probably just give him the river action back and not chop the whole pot. I’m not a fan of saying “you’re good” twice, especially against a rec. If he doesn’t react, you should just table your hand.

When she called I turned face up and said you're good and when she started raking the pot in I asked her what she had and she insisted that because I said you're good that counted as a fold. This was a home game so the whole table had to get into this ridiculous but I did come out on the right side of it.

My thought was a chop would be nice but Mr Pocket 8s won't be happy with anything other than the whole pot. Glad you did chop, as opposed to ruining that guy's day, and I hope he was happy enough because, as mentioned, that was a great deal.

So many ways this could've gone but I think you did the honorable thing by chopping. Nice going Lex!
