In this video I give Dante back to his original owner Margaret. And show a condensed handover on how to carry on building Dante's confidence. It was very sad to have to say goodbye after all the time I spent with him but that is the job. However I am very happy he is doing well with Margaret who would do anything for him.
To see the first and hardest part of the journey addressing Dante's behavioural issues check out my online course

** PS: I NEED YOUR HELP **
My goal is to better the lives of #onemilliondogs in my lifetime. It is clearly impossible for me to do this on a one to one basis. I have seen that with around every thousand views on my videos, I get a comment or email thanking me and letting me know the video has helped. So working on that basis, I have to make videos on how to address every problem
behaviour and accumulate ONE billion views in order to help 1,000,000 dogs.
You can help me reach #onemilliondogs by (1) subscribing to my channel and (2) give this video a thumbs up - so KZbin suggests this video to more dog owners and we can help 1,000,000 dogs all over the world. Thank you so much!
** THANK YOU **

You are such an inspiration, Nigel, and I'm glad that I'm not the only man who cries over his dog. We recently said goodbye to Stella, our 13 year old German Shepherd whom we rescued 12 years ago. Tomorrow, we meet a very shy, timid 2 year old German Shepherd who was surrendered to a dog charity in Perth, WA due to family reasons. We can't wait to welcome her to our home, give her a new life, build her confidence over time and find her happiness. Wish us luck!

Thank you for the great content!!! Can anyone give us some advice?? In short: how to train a fearful dog so he will be able to go outside? Detailed background info: the dog is a 5 year old mutt, 25kg; raised by previous neglectful owner till now, where he is given up to re-home. He was rarely walked by the previous owner and often left alone most hours of the day. He is mostly a people and dog friendly. We have had him for 2-3 weeks now. We have taken him to the vet, checked out, and he has gradually relaxed in our home. He is not food aggressive and only have mild separation anxiety which can be managed with some chew bones and mixed up leaving-ritual. No destructive behaviour, well potty-trained on pad. He used to bark at the door a lot at any tiny bit of sound, after following Nigel Reed's technique by saying thank you and checking the door ourselves, the barking is gone down to like 10-20% of the time. His main issue is he is fearful of any sound outside. We live in a high-rise 1 room small apartment. Even walking out to the lift area is great challenge. He would crouch down and run back towards the apartment if he hear any sound from other apartments or the lift moving up and down the shaft. Our estate regulation require all dogs to wear a muzzle when walking through buildings, but unfortunately the dog is been punished with muzzle before. So even if we could force him into the lift, he would still need to be on muzzle first. And so we cant take him down to the street for daily walks even if we want to. We are trying hard to desensitize him daily to the muzzle and try not to force him to wear it (tried and failed). So now we can only rely on in-house training, some in-house fetch and once-weekly visit to the big park by taking uber (by-passing the muzzle issue) as exercise. With in-house fetch, he would also get bored/ distracted quickly in like 5minutes, and wanting to check out any sounds at the door. At home, training is fine, he doesn't learn very quickly but still able to pick up 1- 2 new tricks so far (high five and roll over). However he is quickly bored/ distracted during training and wants to keep checking the door. He is not interested in any commands or treat once the door is half open, sometimes even when there is sound outside, he would be on high-alert and not take any treat, When he is out at the park (two times now), leash pulling is moderate. He wouldn't take any treats or toys also once out-the-door. We have tried leashing him and walking inside the apartment, then few steps outside and repeat. Though he seems very nervous and anxious. With muzzle training in slow progress and difficulty to get more exercise for him, what should we do to help him? Will he loosen up a bit more by 3weeks and 3months? Thank you everyone very much!!!!

I would like to say a heartfelt thank you, back in winter 2020 I spoke briefly with you regarding problems leaving my greyhound living on my own made it even more difficult. You suggested reading your book. I did and I took it so slowly. I did't go food shopping even if it meant leaving alone longer than his progress aloud. No dog sitter no go. I am so pleased to tell you I can now leave him up to 2/3 hours and he takes it in his stride. So Nigel a huge thank you for being willing to take time to point on the right tracks. I am grateful and am sure my handsome hound his too. You are a gifted compassionate human being and our four legged friends are all the happier for having you.

My dogs issue is with intact males. He is also intact. I recently met a very calm intact male and he still lunged and snarled. I know one of the dogs that attacked him was intact and possibly another one when he was a pup but im not sure how to get him ok with it. He is also intact. Its been suggested i give my dog the chop but that wont stop him smelling an intact male. So not sure. I dont want to remove body parts willy nilly.
@nigelreed
@nigelreed 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lyndsey, it doesn't matter of it is intact males your dog has an issue with or big, small dogs. The advice is the same by teaching them to accept the issue in stages and show them you will protect them. The series demonstrates how to do that. Best of luck.

I think Dante would have been better staying with Nigel (if the owner would have been ok with it). I took my dog on knowing that he would be difficult and that i wouldnt give up but it was so exhausting. If i had felt there was a life that would have been better for him i would have accepted it i think. Not now though.
