Thank you so much for sharing this realistic and super helpful video. My latest GSD rescue pulls like I've never known! Patience is a virtue I know but it's incredibly helpful to get a few new tips - like the shuffling and zig-zagging. Will definitely try them in our walk training. Thank you!

This video felt like therapy to me, I feel like that poor dog because my parents did not teach me structure in my life, did not show or provide a safe environment or reasure me of safety and security. I basically had to be on frequent allert, parent them taking the lead when seeing them not making right choices or decisions, oh boy it was a lot and I need a break at the age of 32 now.

Thank you for sharing Maryam. I'm sorry to hear about your chaotic upbringing. This happens too often with children and dogs for multiple reasons. Both children and dogs thrive off structure, rules, authority, guidance, being listened too. Be sure to break the mould and don't repeat the same mistakes. ❤

I have two dogs. One is better than the other. Do I do these tips separately or can I train together?

If you can do them together then great. But it might be too hard. See video below where I train 2 dogs- but do one at a time as it was too tricky to do both at the same time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGnGgZ6KnZyMac0

I'm a week and a half into rehoming a cavapoo. I can't tell how much of her behaviour is lack of socialization and how much is anxiety, but she's smart and we're making progress slowly, except on her reactions on walks. That's not going so well.

I have an Australian/German Shepherd Mix..he’s so sweet..once you get to know him. but at first he lunges & barks a lot, especially when he doesn’t see the people coming:/ makes me sad, because once he meets other dogs he’s great! but people don’t usually want to go up to him because his teeth I think.. but he once he meets someone & if they move slowly lol then he’s fine!!:) like normal lol still working a lot with him, hopefully I can walk past people normally eventually😂he’s my bbyyyyyy❤

Well the human holding the leash is smiling while her dog lunges at everything so it's clearly just an improperly homed dog, because she cant take her situation seriously which makes it even more dangerous
@paganqueen1
@paganqueen1 Ай бұрын
That's a bit unfair. The smiling could be embarrassment. She probably feels inadequate. I have a very similar reactive dog and I know how uncomfortable it is to be walking down the road with him barking like a frenzied beast. He's a bichon cross Chinese crested. Is he an improperly homed dog too? I have 2 other dogs who are fine. He is unsocialised because we got him at 10 weeks old and discovered he had severe luxating patellas and was unable to walk without screaming in pain. We had to wait until he was 9 months and fully grown before he could have an operation to fix it. The day he had that operation we went into lockdown. I had to remove his stitches myself. So he has never had chance to meet other dogs or people. Don't judge people until you know the circumstances.
@pan0568
@pan0568 Ай бұрын
Very unfair and judgemental to say that. I'm sure she not smiling because she doesn't take her situation seriously. She's on camera, after all, probably feeling embarrassed and anxious. She has called in a fantastic behaviourist in Nigel so is clearly seeking help and guidance.
@cbcdesign001
@cbcdesign001 21 күн бұрын
That's not a fair assessment. She is probably mortified by her dogs behaviour and the smiling is no indication of what the lady is thinking or feeling.

Thank you for this video. I have a dog who is not quite as bad as this but not far off. We no longer take any of our 3 dogs out because I can't handle him with the other 2 dogs as well. They seem to feed off his anxiety. He was a lock down puppy. I have seen your method of turning the dog around before but have not tried it because he has bad knees. He has had to have 2 surgeries on one knee, the first, luxating patella, at 9 months old and the second, TPLO, only 10 weeks ago aged 4. He also needs surgery on the other knee for luxating patella and preventative treatment for ruptured cruciate ligament. I am reluctant to keep pulling him back because of the damage it could do to his already damaged legs. Is there another way to do this method?
@nigelreed
@nigelreed Ай бұрын
Pleasure. You will have to manage the environment better and use a method called retreat then treat - Assuming your dog takes treats (Oreo wouldn't). Encouraging the dog to make the decision to come back to you, before moving forward. Slowly closing the distance.
@paganqueen1
@paganqueen1 Ай бұрын
@@nigelreed He doesn't take treats. He's not "there" when we go out. He is just so focused on getting back home as fast as possible. He is so stressed we don't like walking him at all.

Hi Nigel. Good video. I really need to do this every walk with my highlt reactive Queensland Heeler. I love for her to have the freedom to play and run around but that does not help her overall obedience. But she has pretty good recall and good basic commands. Mainly the reactivity is the bugger. Do you think it could be a genetic thing and can that be improved. And what is the name of the harness you use? Thank you.
@nigelreed
@nigelreed Ай бұрын
Hi there, i doubt it is a genetic issue. Your dog has a level of confidence in you as a leader, in their environment and how they should be behaving. Aim to build her confidence in every area, each day and you will see results. I have no idea what harness that is, sorry. I use Ruffwear though.

Seems like a socialisation issue and not enough exercise
@nigelreed

Exercise will address the symptoms not the cause. The cause is a lack of confidence in leadership, environment (dogs and certain people) and how the dog should be behaving.

4:06 why do you lift up the harnas hard like that? just curious cause i thought it's unnecessary to pull up the dogs body like that
@cmtx3195
@cmtx3195 Ай бұрын
I think its partly to keep her walking as, due to being on a harness, she can easily spin around. This is the problem with harnesses on reactive dogs.
@nigelreed
@nigelreed Ай бұрын
@flipnshifty You see at the beginning (and times at the end) of the video when Nat has Oreo, she goes into attack mode on her hind legs - lunging at perceived dangers. Due to her size and behaviour just using the lead attached to the harness will more likely result in her flipping out for longer periods and landing awkwardly. The quicker I put a stop to her fear-based habits by grabbing the harness, when necessary, the quicker I regain control, reduce her mental stress, and show her to listen to me. She didn’t experience any physical pain and it worked quicker.

My 8 month old puppy Hudson (chihuahua spaniel mix) is dealing with isolation distress. He gets plenty of exercise and nice long walks twice a day. When someone is home, Hudson is fine to be in his crate, wait patiently, or play with his toys in another part of the home while we’re in the bathroom or kitchen. Initially we believed him to have separation anxiety, but as we reinforced crate training and constant rewarding for being quiet when left the room, we discovered his issue is only when we leave the home. We approach leaving our house the same way we approached crate training and keeping him in other rooms (we call them “In and Outs”).. started with short periods of time, rewards when he was calm, extended to longer periods of time the more comfortable he got. When doing In and Out training, we can build up his time to hours in his crate, or 15/20 minutes waiting outside the house (it’s a cold winter in Canada, can’t stay out there long). The problem comes when we leave the house and Hudson realizes this no longer is a training exercise, he howls excessively until our return. He refuses to relax in his crate or take a nap. He once howled for 3 hours straight when we needed to go out. How am I suppose to reward a calm puppy for my return if he’s never calm and doesn’t stop howling? We need to eventually re-enter our home, but because he’s howling that means Hudson wins. We can’t do “In and Out” build ups everytime we need to go out to the gym, dinner, grocery shopping, etc. Please help!! Michael and Stephanie

7:30 imho this is the problem with most people and their walks we approach the dog walk like another checklist item, WE want to go from A to B and be done. where if you use 20 mjn to walk a mile or 20 min to walk to the end of your driveway at least you have moved for 20 min. not enough training , and just wanting to get it done

i did this training with my golden retriever years ago, but also taught him quiet and speak…i would thank him, good boy and i see it, quiet…worked. one time a power guy had to come into the backyard, startled him, i heard a vicious growl and bark…i ran out and said it’s ok,thanks and quiet, he stopped and walked to me…so this can be such a safety issue. i caught my stupid neighbor hanging over the fence feeding him biscuits….i put a stop to that…i want my dog startled if someone is climbing over the fence! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

This was the best, the most honest advice video I've watched. It reduced my stress. Amanda has been on the streets and in various shelters for the last year. Ive been an experience d big dog rescuer with a home but this is my first tiny dog and I'm in an apartment. I feel at sea. But you reminded me I don't have to solve all of her problems this week. Just work at going slowly.and consistently. Let her decompress, for however long that takes, before the training begins.

Sorry to hear that. It’s a very lengthy explanation I’m afraid. The note you ignore him and allow him to decompress the more his anxiety will disappear. No guests just get him used to you first.

I used to have a GSD that would pull me all over the place and I was practising these tips for what felt like ages. One day on a winter evening it all just clicked. It was cold so I stuck my hands in my pockets (with the lead attached to my left wrist). I think it was a sudden mixture of my dog not knowing how far she can pull my arm, and the fact that my other hand was resting on the treats in the other pocket, where it all clicked and she just calmly parked next to me and it was the first super relaxing walk we ever had. Thank you Nigel.

anthropomorphism in our pets is gross ITS A DOG it doesn't Understand Thank you, STOP IT Humansing your animal dos it a DISSERVICE all it NEEDS is YOU to be in control, not to bloody say"tank you" and rewarding(good girl) the BAD behavior it only LOOKS solved because its TV

😆 we can debate if you like my friend (as long as you lose that anger). Anthropomorphism isn't gross if used in the correct manner. There are times it can be helpful and times it can't. Generally one can apply it around more primal needs of humans and dogs. To say it is definitively gross without understanding any nuance is far from accurate. Saying 'thank you' is no more anthropomorphising than saying 'sit'. The technique of dealing with the danger is actually taken from wild canine actions (canidmorphising). I used the words as a precursor that I would take control. The dog then gets conditioned to the next response. It really doesn't matter the words I use. Too add you literally saw it work. This isn't TV. My opinion of a moron is someone who can only see one variable in a multi variable situation and gets angry through ignorance.
