On this waterfowl hunt I was invited by a couple buddies to hunt a private piece that they had reports was holding gadwalls, ringnecks, and a few other puddle ducks. We set up on a point with 4 dozen decoys in front of us and come shooting light we were instantly covered in birds. We tried not to get too caught up in the action but birds were flying everywhere and we all got pretty excited. We shot pretty well and knocked down a variety of 7 different species including; ringnecks, gadwalls, canvasbacks, mallards, bluebills, redheads, and a drake pintail over the course of the morning. The geese were also moving around a bit and gave us quite a few shots. My first goose of the day didn't enjoy that however and decided to land on my head, breaking my GoPro head strap, and knocking me out for a few seconds. We ended the day with 25 birds in total, a ton of great memories & laughs, and a headache for me personally.

Good job on all your videos. After 30 years of waterfowling, its good to see young hunters like you taking interest in the sport. You do it the right way and that's to be commended. A lot of young hunters should follow your example.

I am just now getting into waterfowl hunting since a buddy of mine talked me into it. Went on my first hunt and fell in love with it. shot my first limit of wood ducks. I am torn on the brand of shells I should shoot. We hunt in flooded timber 90% of the time. I bought a case of the winchester xpert steel 2s and 4s 3". Am I okay shooting the cheaper shells or should I buy the higher end shells? I know it all has to do with patter, but I wanted to get your thoughts on it. thanks.
@chase7106
@chase7106 5 жыл бұрын
Whatever patterns well man, cheap shells kill em just as well as expensive shells when they're in range. I almost exclusively shoot Winchester Super X 1550fps, #4s do great in the swamp, I was shooting #3s here. Thomas likes his Hypersonic and Brian likes his Rios. Just find a reliable shell that patterns well out of your gun!
@HokeOutdoors
@HokeOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of guys who shoot xperts and love them. It really comes down to what patterns well out of your gun. I'd shoot the least expensive shells that pattern well out of my gun and don't jam honestly, more expensive shells are typically gimmicks in my opinion (unless it's tungsten or bismuth). My gun really loves Remington hypersonics, never had a jam and they pattern great, so that's why I shoot them..

@brentniedermeier553
@brentniedermeier553 5 жыл бұрын
Once you've hunted for a while and get a good feel for it and build your confidence up with shooting ducks then you can start buying more expensive shells. Starting out I would stick with cheaper shells because chances are your going to do a lot of shooting. If your not used to winshooting it can be a bit of a challenge and you will miss more than you hit lol. 3 inch #4's work great for hunting timber. I personally use #3's but I know several people who shoot 2 3/4 #6's.
@seanwatson55

Brent Niedermeier I’m pretty familiar with wing shooting. I shoot competitive sporting clays. But one thing for sure, those ducks fly faster than them clays. But yeah I got some 3” 4s 1 1/8oz 1550 FPS and my 2s are 3” 1 1/4oz 1400 FPS

Trail Shooter is it really sky busting if he’s knocking down birds. You’re part of the problem. It was a good, ethical hunt
@chase7106
@chase7106 5 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know which ones you thought were sky buster shots?? 3/4 of our shots were within 35 yards, many inside 30. I'd say another 15% within 40 yards and just a few maybe out to 50...which I understand 50 is definitely pushing it, but it's easy to retrieve birds in open water if they're hit. The 2 high ducks I dropped in the decoys were 40 yards straight up and they landed right in the decoys...
@trailshooter2380
@trailshooter2380 5 жыл бұрын
I know this doesn’t go for all duck hunters, but when I’m hunting I am trying to convince the birds to come and land or at least take a good hard look at my decoys. And maybe I worded it wrong by saying skybusting but I don’t feel like your hunting if your just taking every bird that you think you can hit, the goal is to work the birds not just get them into shooting range. You guys didn’t do anything I would say wrong, I just would have waited a little longer to call the shots on some of them. Like giving them another pass or two to really get in the decoys
@HokeOutdoors
@HokeOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
Typically we would've worked a lot of those ducks for another pass. The thing there is you are always competing with live ducks and given that none of us are expert callers if we let most those birds swing around they'll catch a glimpse of a raft of birds a lot bigger than our spread and head out that way. That plus the fact that we didn't have fantastic hide made us a little more willing to take some longer shots. Like Chase said though almost all our shots were pretty close in, and the couple birds we shot a little higher up we were birds we didn't think we would get another pass on.
@zackbohannon5404
@zackbohannon5404 5 жыл бұрын
you don't have to explain yourself. you were hunting, if you think they are close enough take the damn shot who the hell cares about trying to work them right into the decoys yall did enough just for getting them to come by. sick and tired of people complaining about sky busting 50 yds and in is NOT SKYBUSTING!!!

I took a lesser to the head last year, just barely out of the camera view. You could see the shadows of it happening in the camera view. Luckily I saw it coming and covered up a bit. Still felt it for a couple days after. Pretty dangerous if you happen to have one flying at you with a broken wing.

Either way I was just yanking your chain because that’s what every duck hunter says these days. Either you’re sky busting, calling too much, setup wrong etc etc....it was a nice mixed bag you guys had, don’t see very many redheads or Canvasbacks down here in Louisiana.....PS, don’t let commentators get you upset, we’re here behind the safety of our keyboards. chase7106 oh it wouldn’t surprise me tbh. Duck hunting is not what it use to be. It’s definitely a poser sport now. Who ever had the most money has the most success. And then instead of helping each other we’re constantly trying to put the other ones down and fight them. But that’s all thanks to DU, Banded, Drake etc. the big brands make it seem like there are teams and if you don’t do the same thing every one else does then you’re the enemy

@HokeOutdoors
@HokeOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
In hindsight it was probably a shot that we should've let pass. That said the shot Chase took was not even close to the dog. He was shooting at least 60 degrees or more to the left of where Wade was. The bird was high up off the water too.

In a perfect waterfowling world we would always know what we're shooting at. That's just not the reality of a lot of situations. It was very cloudy that day and thus it was hard to see colors very well. A lot of our other hunts are in swamps where during the first 30 minutes you're shooting silhouettes at best and blurs if they get below the tree line. I wish I shot all my birds at 20 yards with the sun out but that's not gonna happen. I will say 98% of our shots this day were taken with 40 yards, GoPro makes it look a lot further

@@HokeOutdoors is it ethical to shoot at birds if you don't know what they are especially with a 2 mallard 1 hen limit this year? I can tell you now I at least know what species I'm shooting at before I pull the trigger
@HokeOutdoors
@HokeOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it's not ethical, maybe dumb or reckless. With a 2 mallard limit if I don't know whether it's a hen or a drake I'm going out to pickup that bird before I pull the trigger again on mallard sized duck. I hear what you're saying but I just don't think that's the reality for a lot of waterfowl hunters. I've hunted with multiple guys that have been waterfowling 20+ years and have phenomenal duck ID skills and even they aren't 100% accurate on what they've just shot if it's in the first 30 minutes of shooting light.

If someone picks up and shoots over the water near where my dog is retrieving we gonna have a big problem. Gotta have more sense than that.

None of us shot over Wade.. Chase shot the bird that was flying but that was way to left of Wade. Me and Brian lined up for a clean up shot and waited for the duck to swim right or left so that we'd have have a clear shot but the bird just ended up dying

@@HokeOutdoors 10:41 dog is in water and a shot is taken over water near the area where the dog is retrieving. The bird falls in front of dog mid retrieve . That shot should not have been taken. Once a dog is in water and retrieving no one should shoot unless its a directly over head shot, even then i personally wouldn't shoot. Its a bad habit to get into and will end up getting a dog shot. Im not trying to bust your chops. Ive been hunting 20 plus years and just trying to pass on the knowledge and danger of shooting when a dog is retrieving, a lot can go wrong and is a situation that can be avoided.

Yeah, he's just starting to learn, he'll be 1 year old in a couple weeks. He made a few more retrieves that aren't shown in the video. I didn't want to push him too hard and force him to go out there if he didn't want to. I've definitely seen an improvement in him since the early season though.
