When I reviewed these videos I was reminded of the late great Jim Croce. Highway footage was shot heading north along state route 74 - "Pines to Palms Highway" - on the outskirts of the Anza-Borrego State Park in southern California. It eventually empties into the Coachella Valley (Palm Desert, southeast from Palm Springs.)

When I heard this song in Django I smiled till my face hurt. It was such a perfect fit and one of my favorite oldies.

My dream was to haul my horse and myself out west to trail ride--> Florida to Wyoming ... and back. This I did! Recently, my son picked this as "our song" as he and I danced at his wedding reception. Life has not passed me by.

Thank you for your service. I'm an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War myself, so I know how tough it can be. Even with our comrades around us there are times when we still feel pretty much alone. Music can help us connect with memories of the ones we love as well as those familiar places and favorite things that we miss so much.

I would like to dedicate this song to my father, who passed away April 7, 2012 at 3:37 AM. The phrase "I've got a name. And I carry it with me like my daddy did" is so very true for me, as I was named after my father. You've only been gone for a month, but already it seems like an eternity. Goodnight, Dad. I'll see you in the morning.

Just spent five days in Utah last week. I played this song too while driving, especially along the scenic route 12. Incredible. The pine trees, the cool air and the fantastic views of the canyons and mountains with this song playing was more than enough to lift our spirits. Thank you Lord for the gift of nature.

One of the best songs Jim Croce ever penned. Excellent video. I used to live in Southern California (San Diego to be exact) in the mid 80's and my wife and I went through Anza-Borrego on our way down to San Diego and we visited the park several times while we lived in SD. That video brings some good memories for me. Thanks for posting.

Sorry George but this was one of the very few that Jim recorded but did not write. It was written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. It was the theme song for the 1973 movie The Last American Hero. All the other songs in the movie were written by Jim. He was offered the opportunity to get his music great exposure in a movie on the condition that he record the theme song that he did not write.

What an absolutely beautiful singer/songwriter. This song gives me goosebumps all over. Every word is hand-crafted for maximum impact. There used to be another video on youtube for this song with still-motion shots of a bird taking off from a tree branch, a motorcycle rider, a young couple with a baby, all at the appropriate points of the song, and there was a dedication at the end "to Jim Croce, taken from us too soon." I can't find it anywhere now though. Sad...

Of course I love this song. Not so long before it came out, my friend Leon, angry that his Dad tossed Leon and his wife out of his Dad's house, invited me to ride with him along this very same highway. Leon was so angry he just passed every car going down this road, not regarding the curves. No sooner had we passed one car than around one of those curves came a big tractor trailer, which we missed head-on-ing by inches. I'll never forget that ride or this highway.
