I bought the Grizzly G1033X 20" helical head planer and in this video, I show how I set it up and made some of the first cuts. I'll show some of the ways that I went about things, and considerations you might want to make if you have the same machine.

Don’t you love how quiet it is!?! We had a lot of snipe because the bed rollers were a little too high for us… a straight edge and a half hour adjusting them to be perfectly level with the table will solve it!

Bruce, I think you'll find that reducing down to 4" flex hose instead of increasing to 6" rigid pipe will cause your collector to work harder. I had that problem until I increased my air flow with 6" pipe and reduced to 5" at the machine. It's also recommended that you place your blast gate at the machine. All in all I believe you'll find the machine more than you'll most likely ever need in a home workshop. Forgot to mention, the cutter inserts are very easy to turn or replace once to get to that need. I've had mine for 3 years now and have just turned 4 of them (I let a "friend" run some pallet wood through). Thanks for the "Time well spent" video.
@BruceAUlrich

I'll definitely keep that in mine. I actually had 2 of the 3 ports open (one of them being this planer) for my dust collector. That seems to be the remedy to not make the DC work too hard is leave more than one port open if they're smaller like this. Oh man...that friend's pallet wood made me cringe. ha ha. Thanks for watching!

Good video, Bruce~! I've been considering getting a Grizzly 15" helical head planer as an upgrade to my 10-year old Dewalt 733. After seeing this video (and a few others), I'm now thinking that upgrading to a 20" might be a better move. Going from a 12" to 15" is "that much" of an upgrade, but up to a 20" should tackle anything I can throw at it. Looking forward to hear more of what you have to say about your G1033X. Thanks much~!

Awesome machine. I have a MUCH smaller jointer with carbide cutters. The manufacturer suggested removing all of them and cleaning them, then reinstalling before you start using the tool. Has the same cosmoline coating for shipping. I'm guessing thats what was all over your beautiful tables. Hope it doesn't stain any of your pieces.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 2 жыл бұрын
Nah, it’ll be ok. They didn’t mention that anywhere in the manual. I’m not taking a piece straight from this to finish so I’ll be able to sand anything first.

@BruceAUlrich

I don't see the helical head ones come up very often. I had been looking for a long time. It is a substantial upgrade from the smaller lunchbox planers. I had the Dewalt 735 before this one.

@@BruceAUlrich I've thought about upgrading to the DeWalt, but figured if I'm upgrading, it won't be for 0.5" capacity. I want at least 18".

Good video buddy, If you ever need to take the in/out feed tables off you should be able to use some bar clamps as legs to hold the tables up.

@@StephenGoggin Yeah, I like that idea. There's a huge price gap to jump from that DeWalt to this one. I think that's why so many people don't. I'll mull it over. ;)
