I got a new Vanilla Orchid! 🌱

Many years ago I had some Vanilla planifolia cuttings which grew very well without much care required! Since many people are interested in growing this species, I got a new one and hopefully we'll get some flowers one day 😄

With the insecticide, you may not be able to collect the vanilla from the bean. Make sure to check the insecticide packaging. You can only use certain ones with edible plants. 🤗

I would suggest burying more than just one node. Usually only 1 root will come out of one node and in case it goes bad, it is good to have a "backup" root. I normally bury 3 nodes in the media (remove leaves before doing this). The flowers will take a while. The vine needs to be at least 3 years old to produce a flower on it. I have had my large vanilla growing for about 5 years now and still waiting for that flower. I also have the variegated one and it grows no slower than the fully green one. In terms of how they grow - if your growing conditions are colder, the plant may go dormant in winter so do not be surprised if it just sits there for a few months and does literally nothing 🙂

you can grow vanilla the same way a Hoya (Hoya sp is actually way more dificult to grow than Vanilla sp), i think it is the easiest orchid, you need to wait a couple of years to make it flower, but they are very easy to grow, in my country we grow them beside cofee plants using the same sustrato. They need soil it is the best sustrato for them. I love vanilla because they grow relly fast. by the way you can add rootex or any other auxin to the stem, you will gt new roots around 2 weeks you just need to cut the stem and add the auxin on the wound, let it dry for 2 days and then plant your stem making sure that the wound is under the soil because roots need shadow to grow properly (sory for the shitty engish)

I've got a variegated one, and it's both vigorous and expressive. I think I got lucky with expression, and it's in a paludarium so watering while mounted is easy. Good luck making a seed pod!

I have a vanilla in a mixture of bark and moss. I live in the PNW on the coast. So cooler and humid. I got the cutting in early spring. It is under grow light on a diy trellis. It seems to be growing and happy. I figure it will be quite some time before it will bloom

I have one that is doing fantastic! Hoping it will bloom. I am in Texas and it loves it outside in the heat and humidity as long as it is watered. It is in part sun part shade.

In coastal Mississippi I keep mine in shade but it loves the humidity and heat too. Rough estimate I think it's about 15 feet long, still waiting on those flowers too!! Good luck with yours!!

Hey Danny! Good luck with this vanilla. I’m on my second as well. I’m growing it in a mix of mostly sphagnum with Lecca, bark and charcoal. Seems really happy. I put it outside during summer because it gets hot and humid here in Maryland on the mid-Atlantic coast of the US and boy does it like that. In winter I keep it in a southern facing window with no curtains that is above my indoor water garden with a misting bowl and atomizing fountain hanging above it to give it the humidity it likes because winters here are really really dry.

I jumper straight from having a moth orchid for a couple months to trying a beautiful variegated vanilla I found at a plant fest... not sure if it got root/stem rot before or after I brought it home but I found it within days. So glad for this video- I'm trying to save her right now! Was relieved to see the stem rot seems to be very common with these

I got a vanilla planifolia last year, put it in my millsbo cabinet under Barrina lights, and... it wasn't growing. Then, I sealed the doors of the cabinet, put in a DIY humidifier inside, and it took off! I really think it needs a good humidity level (I can now provide 70-80% humidity in my cabinet). As for flowers, what I read is that it needs to be a mature plant, so probably a few years old to produce flowers. Good luck with yours!

I've had my variegated vanilla orchid for about a year, no flowers yet. We are still getting to know each other hahaha. She's growing up a moss pole but it's the store bought green on so it doesn't hold onto moisture at all. Thinking of making a sphagnum moss pole for it to see if it will produce flowers

“I looked everywhere I couldn’t find it” - when you have so many plants you don’t even know which ones you have and which you don’t, or where they’re located. 😂 I was also thinking about getting a vanilla orchid (I guess that’s why it was recommended to me) or a Madagascar jasmine (Stephanotis) to climb on my wall. It’s indoors and it doesn’t have the most light. I guess neither will thrive, but it is what it is. 😅

On variegation: You have the white variegated one (quite rare in Europe at the moment and expensive). Other species are also common in shops and addicts (and some being rare and/or slow growers are quite expensive :/ ). Only very few are used in producing the beans (Planifolia and Pompona and their hybrids to my knowledge). Cirad, an agricultural research center, has very good resources on how to cultivate them if you want to go further (Mostly french but I recall some in English? nothing too complex for any machine translation anyway)

I purchased my vanilla planifolia cutting from Amazon in November 2021. It was no longer than 6" with some aerial roots. Here in Northern Michigan (!) I have a heat mat (set to 85F), on which sits a 10"x20" humidity tray (in which the heating probe is submerged). I eventually constructed a "mini greenhouse" by attaching a large "Easter Egg basket-sized" cellophane bag to a frame constructed out of foam core (which sits around the humidity tray). I've also placed dual 2" USB fans inside the greenhouse for air circulation. The plant sits in front of an East-facing window 24/7. 2 1/2 years later it is now approximately 30"-36" long and is wrapped around a cacao coir post covered in sphagnum moss. The aerial roots tend to develop a little and eventually dry out but just recently the plant has decided to produce about 4 new, very thick aerial roots randomly along its length so that's encouraging! I do spritz with water several times weekly and provide orchid food spray on occasion. I haven't killed it yet! If vanilla plants are supposed to be at least 10ft long before flowering, I expect to see flowers in about 8 years from now! LOL

I had one for years, growing in potting soil in a hanging basket. It was huge but never flowered. It lived in my greenhouse in the winter. A couple of winters ago, we had extremely cold weather with several days of single-digit temps and power outages throughout the area. Most of the vine froze; but I was able to salvage a small piece. It has been very slow to begin growing but is finally about 14" long. It makes a beautiful vine and looks much like hoya, but the stem is a lot thicker than hoya stems.

I've been seeing these pop up at my local nursery, and was curious about them. I'm so tempted to buy one. The nursery near me has a couple mature specimens, but the price tag is pretty high ($89 USD for an 8 inch pot). I had read that they were difficult to grow, but my environment is pretty warm and humid. I'm now wondering if this would do okay outside for me. I'm in Southern California.

I have a 3 years old one. It is amazingly big and I didn’t know in advance it was going to climb. I clipped it with clips to the regular wooden orchid sticks, and now I can’t control it. Also- I got a vanilla stick but I didn’t see any bloom. I was wondering: a. How can I fix this climbing and arrange it so it climbs comfortably? I am afraid if I take down all the clips it will break. B. How do I cut the vanilla stick when it emerges again? Last time I didn’t know when was the right time or how to cut it correctly and it just dried out. C. Just to say thank you for this amazing channel, and especially to this video. You will first need to manually fertilize the flower. After pod harvest you need to cure the pods - a total of about 9 months! Lots of articles on the internet. The manually intensive process is why vanilla flavoring costs so much and why artificial vanilla flavoring is so much cheaper and undercutting the prices of vanilla farmers.
