What’s funny is that Apoballis used to be classified as Schismatoglottis, and some people still consider them Schismatoglottis, and you had one sitting behind you the whole video. Their care is very similar to that.

@@GoodGrowing just don’t keep the soil as moist as Schismatoglottis! Mine rotted. They get really droopy when thirsty but still like drying out in chunky aroid mix between waterings. They also seem to appreciate humidity but I’m in Florida so that’s not a problem even indoors.

I also was curious about the Apoballis acuminatissima , a quick search yielded this: Apoballis acuminatissima ‘Lavallaei’ is native to Indonesia where it grows like many other Aroids in humid tropical forests. The care for Apoballis acuminatissima ‘Lavallaei’ is similar to many other Aroids, and can most closely be compared to Anthuriums. (copied from a care guide from foliacollective, the picture they had on that page was stunning with mostly silver leaves) And apparently it´s toxic to pets!

I got an Apoballis from Gabriella plants in the US! It is very easy to care for. I treat it like more or less like your average aroid- let it dry a little between waterings; it's in front of a west facing window, and my humidity is always around 55% with humidifier help. It grows like a calathea, with the leaves emerging rolled up. Gabriella plants still has them in stock and they are on sale! 😀

My biggest concern when it comes to rare plants is whether or not they've been grown from tissue culture or other methods that ensure the wild population hasn't been impacted. There's a lot of poaching when it comes to rare and unusual plants. Plant poaching is a huge issue. I want to make sure that every plant in my collection was ethically sourced. Wild populations are essential to maintain ecosystems and the insects and animals that depend on the plants.

Hey Kat, that’s great to hear that you are cautious when purchasing more uncommon plants. I am one of the owners of GrowTropicals and House of Kojo and the reason we started was because we saw how many plants were being poached (especially during Covid) and wanted to offer a great selection (we have been collecting for many years) but in an ethical way. When we started, all of our sales were from our own propagations; but now we also source plants from NL among other places where we can be certain they are tissue cultured or otherwise mass propagated in a sustainable way. We have never and will never offer any plants for sale where the provenance is uncertain.

Love alocasia too! It’s my favorite plant! Your melo seems like the same thing as the maharani; is it? I’m from Quebec, Canada, and we have alocasia maharani over here. They seems pretty similar. And I have to tell you : in another of your videos, you’ve talked about your peperomia sarcophylla, and I cannot get my hands on it here, in North America! I’ve been asking lots of plant shops, small plant businesses, people who import plants from abroad: there is no way to have one, and it’s driving me crazy!!!! I want one so badly! And I know House of Kojo sells them, but I don’t live in the UK! I really hope we can have them here in Canada some day!
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing Жыл бұрын
I think the maharani is a darker form of the melo. The melo is meant to be super silvery grey, though mine looks darker so might be a maharani 🤷‍♀️ I've heard the same about the sarcophylla not being available in the states! I wonder if I can find a way to bring a leaf over next time I come 🙊

I love plant #6, the dragon tail. I'm not sure I could take care of a crawling plant inside. My aunt gave me a cutting for the common arrowhead/syngonium. It is traveling from pot to pot outside on my patio. Funnily enough, the classic syngonium is a gorgeous deep green with bright white veins. It's more robust than my pink syngonium as well as my three kings syngonium. I ended up putting the pink syngonium outside in the bright shade of my patio because the pink was fading out to a pale lime green with pink veins. Some of the newer leaves had been coming in a weird shade of brown. All of my plants are under grow lights for 12-15 hours a day.
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing Жыл бұрын
Yeah syngoniums are super sensitive to light and even indirect sun outside can be too bright for them. Either that or you’ve got pests 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wonder if they only have good packaging on larger items? I placed an order with them and grow tropicals, as they have taken over one from the other (didn't know at the time of ordering) and neither of the packages had anything on them to state plants were inside/this way up/branding, they were plain boxes and both were crushed. Both orders had pests and I lost a plant on each order. Glad to see your plants were in good condition the ones you got were very unique, haven't seen most of them before!

I got a delivery from house of kojo today too, and I have to say I'm a little jealous of your plants! I bought myself 2 hoya, neither of which look in great condition and one of them was supposed to come in a hanger but didn't. I got my friend a hoya australis lisa which looks amazing, so regretting not just getting myself one of those 😢 I have seem to have really bad luck ordering full plants, think this is my call to stick to bare root cuttings!
