I have been building and modifying jeeps for decades and have repaired lots of death wobbling jeeps for people. Tie rods, track bar, drag link, any of these can cause death wobble to show up. One reason the xj and the wj are more susceptible to death wobble is their factory caster settings. The come from the factory literally on the ragged edge of what is not enough caster, 3.5 degrees. After repairing the current cause of your A set of adjustable lower control arms is a must do upgrade. Use the adjustability to turn that caster angle up to 5 degrees, even 6-7 on a lifted rig, set the toe properly and even a worn out front end will be much less prone to death wobble.

Would you mind steering me in the right direction? I took my tie rod bar off the wj and placed it next to my new assembly to get the measurements as close as possible. I noticed that the old one has a tilted tie rod end. Do I match that tilt angle on the new one to get the same measurement? Thanks!

Dan, you should tight the bolts when the jeep is with the hole weight on the street and you roll it a few meters. Then your axle will center and your bushings will be in the correct Position.

I replaced my track bar on my 2004 WJ because I was getting the death wobble. A year later I got the death wobble again. That's when I watched your video where you replaced the upper and lower control arms and axle bushings. I figured mine needed replacing since it had over 230k miles on it. Sure enough they were all completely worn out. After replacing everything I still had the wobble. My hunch was the one year old track bar was bad even though it was 1 year old. I replaced it again and 5 months later no wobble. It held out for a year but got worn out because everything else was shot. Not sure how long after you replaced your track bar you changed out the rest of the front suspension but if you still get the wobble start with that track bar again.

You need an adjustable track bar after you lift it, that's why your steering wheel is crooked, when you lift it and use the non adjustable track bar it pulls your front differential to the one side, you can see when you measure how far each tire sticks out on the sides

When replacing the rear upper control arm, it is easiest to remove it WITH the ball joint still attached. The three 18MM (IIRC) bolts can be easily accessed and removed using a box-end wrench. The arm almost never releases the joint unless you buy the ridiculously priced puller that is specifically for it. Also, while you were working on the axle-side of the trackbar, I did notice the dent next to the trackbar mount @ 6:46. Looks like your draglink made some major contact at some point.. Keep up the good work, my friend.

I know someone has had to mention this in one of your videos. You really need to consider using a torque wrench on suspension, steering, and brake components when replacing them. Too loose will cause wallowing of mounting holes or worse, too tight can over stress the hardware causing it to fracture and break. Not good if it breaks when you're driving. I've been trying to stress this with our maintenance guy for years. Not long ago he was doing brakes on a Tundra. I asked him.. dude where's your torque wrench? Oh man you don't really need one, I got this.A few minutes later he snapped off a caliper mounting bolt.

@@ProjectDanH it's just something I noticed every time I see people say they took care of their death wobble. Something I remedied on mine when the death wobble just kept coming back and wouldn't stop coming back no matter what until I fix that. I remember being pissed cuz I just put on a brand new pair of control arms all brand new everything about 2 days later I get a massive death wobble after hitting a bump. So basically that track bar is holding up the entire weight of your vehicle and every time you turn it's pulling/ pushing on those two bolts upper and lower track bar mount. If the holes in those mounts are any size bigger than the bolts there's not a tightness you can get it to you that won't stop it from moving in that mount.
@atozproductions96602 жыл бұрын
What I did is I turned pieces of round stock on the lathe and made it exact fit to the hardware. (Steel washers that fit to the hardware would be fine) then I welded those over the two holes front and back at the top mount and the one hole in the front of the bottom mount. Completely killed the death wobble

The intro gave me PTSD from when my ZJ had death wobble, ended up being the track bar and dealt with it for a while.

@@ProjectDanH Dan, I get gas at the local speedway by my place. A couple guys walked up to me asking about my 93 XJ. At any rate, one of the guys ended up becoming a friend. We went to a piece of commercial property he owns (Where I believe he want's some help getting the yard in order so he can erect a garage). With that being said, he had me look at a 98 or 99 XJ with some really terrible Michigan frame rot. It's not a road driver by any means. At any rate, he offered to sell it to me for $100. Since I have to get the lower track bar nut bracket tack-welded so it won't move back & forth like it has been doing & since he is a self employed welder by trade, I am gonna ask him if he'd do it, then I'll try taking him up on the $100 XJ deal. He told me that the drivetrain is in perfect condition & that he only parked it some years back because of the frame being rotted out. I am trying to keep this comment under 2,000 words, here's what I found under my XJ. I haven't experienced any DW, plus the guy who drove it back here to Michigan from Colorado Springs, CO. said he didn't have that issue either. But wait, it gets better. When I explained to my Wife why I had about a 3rd of a turn of play in the steering, I explained to her that lower track bar bushing is worn out, & the nut that broke loose from the bracket, which is probably 90% of the play, she said, ''Dan, (My actual first name), ya know your Jeep is nice to drive.'' So I said to her, (Fingers crossed at this point), ''Ya know dear, I was thinking of instead of getting another Hyundai, Tucson, I was thinking how bout a 98 or 99 Cherokee for you''? She said ''Yah, I'd like one if you can find a nice one.'' This all happened during our Mother's Day Date. Then that afternoon I watched you & your Wife's Mother's Day Trip to the ''Junk Yard.'' (Which I had her watch too.) I believe one of the things that is helping me Seal-The-Deal for getting the Green Light to look for another XJ for the Wife, was your video with your Wife, plus me taking the time to explain why my XJ has that steering play... Thanks Big-Time Dan H & Many Blessings to you & your Wife ''Mrs H'' As Well.... Thanks for sharing that adventure with us on KZbin. It was really enjoyable to watch you guys:) P.S. Sorry this comment is so LONG & takes up most of the comment page. You're the best Dan, Thee-Best (Plus your Wife seems to be so Awesome Too) Hope you two are doing well & also ''Happy Belated Mothers Day'' to the Wife from the both of us here in Pontiac..................

Why do you have a Vermont license plate when you clearly live in NY ?
@ProjectDanH2 жыл бұрын
The previous owner did not have a title so the vehicle was titles and registered in VT by a titling company.

@@ProjectDanH the pitman side ball end drops down, the axle side makes clearance for the axle. The drop down helps with bump steer. It levels the drag link.
