If you had 5GB/5GB, then you are on their new XGS Fiber Network... This means you can bypass the White AT&T Gateway altogether. You'll need a WAS-110 SFP+ ONT Module, and the programing takes only a few minutes. It continues to work after power outages, restarts, etc. It allows you to plug the Fiber Directly to your Unifi System. I know this is an old video, but having 2GB or 5GB fiber isn't about any one user reaching those speeds, it's about the sum total of all of the users on the network. I'm currently on 2Gb Google Fiber and we have multiple TVs streaming, computers using lots of data and more. I"m certain we could get by on 1GB, but that extra is nice with multiple data consumers and in our case some content creation going on. I'm coming out of my 2.5GB port on my Google router to an unmanned 2.5GB switch which feeds three other rooms. They have a mix of 1GB and 2GB switches to hook up everything in that room... and then you have all the wifi devices. We are getting ready to move and I'm probably going to get AT&T 5GB service. I intended to come off of their router with a SFP+ port with direct access copper and not RJ-45/Cat 6 and put that in to a small 4 port 10GB switch. I'll feed 10GB into a 2.5GB switch to feed all the computers and media and a second 2.5GB switch with Power over Ethernet (POE) so that I can have wired backhaul to the WiFi mesh network and eventually put up security cameras. That's my plan at least.

AT&T uses 802.1x authentication, which is why you have to use one of their modems to connect. If you have the older combo with a separate ONT and modem, you have two bypass options: 1) eap_proxy method, which still requires the AT&T modem for initial authentication, or 2) getting valid certs off the AT&T modem and then configuring your own router to use them to authenticate. Option 1 is well documented and fairly straightforward to do. Option 2, to my previous experience with it, was a nightmare that I was never able to get working. I ran the eap_proxy method for a while, but honestly it's kind of pointless because there was no perceptible performance difference and, again, you still have to keep the AT&T box around for reauthenticating after a power or service outage. l think you could potentially bypass the BGW320 if you can get a set of valid certs, use those with your router to do the 802.1x authentication, AND have a router with a SFP port and the right SFP module to connect the fiber line directly to your router, but honestly I don't think it would be worth the effort. Sure, it would be nice to get rid of one extra piece of equipment, but unless you have issues with being double natted or some other uncommon use case, I really question the need to go through all the hassle to get around it. I have the BGW320 now and honestly don't have any issues dealing with bridge mode.

You won’t be able to get around it because the ONT is built into the BGW 320 and it runs a certificate checking service. No that will not work. There has to be an ONT between you and ATT.

@@SPXLabs thank you for your response I appreciate it! My original plan was to plug my own router to the gateway but I am getting very inconsistent speeds via Ethernet on the bgw 320 that’s what I started looking into getting my own SFP router or switch instead

Ahhh, très bon! Good work, for testing I usually look at task manager or activity monitor in addition to what those testing sites say - IMHO the OS should know best how much data goes in & out

Linux doesn’t hav task manager. Mwuahahahaha

I lied actually. I mean macOS. Which reports in MB for some reason

@@SPXLabs I know you MBP shows up here and there ... BTW testing on my old crappy hardware I always open another window to cover up the test with the fancy dial animation (or minimize it), that was sucking up too much CPU, so the numbers are lower since it can't keep up with the net

Lol yeah I did actually consider that

He's ruining nothing. He didn't discover some closely held secret. He just made his endpoint equipment fast enough to take full advantage of his WAN link. Basically, he just lifted a self-imposed limitation. You can, too.

I'm sure this is an old enough video that you won't even see this question, but I'll give it a go. My home internet needs are relatively simple but I would still love to do this to have better access to what I'm paying for (the same 1gig Att you are talking about in the video) would I be able to do this same thing but using a WiFi router with an spf+ port like the TP-Link Tri-Band BE19000 WiFi 7 Router (Archer BE800)?
