Thank you for the video, and the realistic expectations you give here. I love the detailed insights you provided. Like you, my first year undergrad GPA was garbage, but unlike you I didn't get straight A's afterwards, it improved a lot, but I didn't get 3.0 when I graduated, it was super close doe. I'm not even aiming for University of Tokyo, was aiming for Kyushu and the likes. In your honest opinion should I just give up trying to get a Master degree there? Thanks again for the video! :D

Hi Allison, love your channel! I just recently got accepted into GPSS-GLI in Tokyo University and is going to start the programme in September this year. Just wondering how is life in general? Whether you are able to meet a lot of international or mainly japanese friends at Tokyo University or a mixture of both, and do you live in a rent apartment outside or student dorms? Thanks!

It's a highly competitive university and I didn't really know much about the professors and I knew some of the answers I was giving probably weren't preferable, but I had to be honest! Hi Allison. My situation is unusual. I am a retired lawyer who returned to graduate school, more for purposes of scholarship than employment. I graduated UCLA in 1975, and Southwestern University School of Law in 1980. I have extensive experience as a litigator. I recently completed two graduate courses in sociology, and a graduate seminar in history, at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. I received 'A's in each class. I have been developing a thesis that involves Japanese culture and its possible influence on youth culture in the United States. I have some insight into Japanese culture and religion by virtue of the fact that I have been an independent practitioner and student of Nichiren Buddhism for most of the past half-century. I wish to study cultural anthropology in Japan and am trying to find an English PhD program that will offer sufficient flexibility that will allow me to continue working towards a graduate degree while focusing mainly on my research project, with as few required classes as possible. Can you offer any suggestions? I appreciate the advice that you gave in your video. It all made very good sense. I hope you are enjoying life in Japan.

Hi Allison! First of all thank you for providing such great information through your channel:D Actually i have one question about eniglish base program in japan university. Since i can't speak japanese at all, i think it would be a bit difficult to communicate with japanese professors. Also i just wonder is it really possible to get grad education only in english. Of course some universities in japan introduced about english base program on their website, but i'm a bit worried if I could study in Japan even though i can't speak Japanese at all. I would be really appreciate if you leave a answer comment for my question. Anyway have a nice day!!
@AllisoninTokyo
@AllisoninTokyo 3 жыл бұрын
Well since I’m in an all-English program it’s definitely real!! 😂 As long as you are studying at a program by one of the top 20 or so schools in Japan then you will probably be fine! Professors at good schools basically need to speak English because that’s the language of academia. And some professors will be from abroad too! Of course there will be cultural hurdles and some linguistic ones perhaps, but if you find a program you like and it is specifically marketed as an English one then you’ll be fine! A lot has changed in just the last 10 years here and they’re probably legit! If you’re unsure you can just email them :) Of course living abroad not speaking the language is a bit hard, but you’ll learn quickly 😆

Hello Allison! I was wondering whether Japan usually has scholarship offers in the Linguistics major? I will be getting my bachelor's degree this July and I was thinking about the possibility of studying my master's there.
@AllisoninTokyo
@AllisoninTokyo 3 жыл бұрын
Yes!! A lot of scholarships are actually targeted at nationalities rather than specific field of study! Of course there’s some that are only for engineering and etc, but you’ll definitely be eligible for some! Side note, I have found out a lot of scholarships are only for Asian students so if you’re from Asia you’re set, otherwise it can be a little bit more difficult, but definitely not impossible!

Hi Allison thank you so much for this informative video, nice work! Just a quick question: Pretty much all graduate programs I'm planning on applying for needs the ORINGINAL certification of graduation or diploma from my undergraduate school. That'll cost $40 for each additional copy so expensive lol. Do I really have to order additional copies of the diploma from my undergraduate school or would it be okay if I can just get the electronic pdf version and just print it? Would really appreciate it if you could help me on this one🙏

@@emanib8467 I applied for Waseda and Rikkyo. They both turned out to be pretty flexible a nd I just sent the electronic version. Hope everything will go well😁

I'm wondering how difficult it will be for me to get into the University of Tokyo; they have the program I want, but my current university doesn't do grades. On the flip side, we do a lot of hands-on projects and I will have a transcript of 40+ pages--when I graduate with my bachelor's--of professor writings about my work, but I am concerned the lack of grades will be a put-off for Japan's Top University.

I would directly email the admissions department and ask about this! It seems like a pretty unique situation but if you're able to quantify it in grades somehow they would probably accept it 🧐

For my university it’s not included, but you can get a dorm for 10,000 yen a month if you can show financial struggle! Even some normal dorms are only a little more expensive. It’s very cheap for Japan and if you get a part time job you’ll have no problem covering it 🙏
