As of last year, Paris passed rent control for all long term rentals (longer than a year), you can find out the price you should be paying for the location, built, furnished or unfurnished using a calculator through the Marie's website. Don't want anyone to get ripped off in the future!

I like your positive attitude & the idea/thought of things happening for a purpose. *My advice: No matter if you are renting/buying in U.S., France, UK, etc. order a security camera from Amazon. You definitely need to know if someone is coming into your place wherever you live, when you are not there*. You will never know if "Mr. T." stole the cameras or if he never changes the locks on the studio ...considering he wasn't paying the Electric Bill, doesn't seem like he would pay for new locks/keys every time someone moved out. You also might go through an agent & not go alone even if you don't have an agent to look at a place.

I had ALMOST the EXACT experiment as you did in paris! Apartment owner can some times really take advantage of the fact that it can be difficult finding housing inside the city. I’ve lived in France for 10 years now, 5 years in Paris and this has happened to so many people I know

I studied abroad in London( thankfully my flat was amazing and provided for by my uni already. It was a blessing but it's like that for most study abroad programs for US students), and can't even imagine how it would be to look for an apartment in Europe by myself oneday. But, luckily for you everything worked out well and how it was supposed to be. And, nothing truly bad happened with that crazy guy. It sucks how Paris makes it so hard for people to get a freakin apartment that people like you when first desperate need to resort to "under the table" kind of deals. Makes me so mad! I remember Damon Domunique another YTber talking about how difficult it was for even him! And, he was being supported or something by the French government to live and work in France ( I forget what the term is haha. ). On the one hand I get it but on the other hand it's crazy! I think for me from watching all these nightmare stories i would have to go through the legit route first finding a real rental agency in whatever country i live in one day and hopefully always look for a women landlord in Europe- cause people can be weird. Even women. But, more so men, unfortunately. Anywho, wish you all kinds of good and wonderful success in whatever you do! :)

Yeah Paris is cutthroat for apartments. I just moved up from Bordeaux, and despite both my partner and I having CDI contracts, more than 3x the rent in joint monthly revenue, it was a rough ride finding a place to live. You basically have to have all the documents they could want at the ready to apply as soon as you visit the place. And then they could still choose someone else with better income or that the landlord likes better. We only got an edge over others because both our jobs are "coronavirus safe" and if the stay at home order is reinstated, our job security will not be affected, so we could still pay rent.
