After all of the pain and struggling it took to get to this point, my entire trip was over in just a few sentences. Thanks to the endless bureaucracy that plagues Latin America, with Ecuador being no exception, my 5 day hike to Cotopaxi was ended after 2 through no fault of my own. When I started this hike just outside of the village of Papallacta, I stopped by the control station in El Tambo in attempt to avoid these types of problems. Although the building was closed with nobody in sight, I quickly met up with some authorities out on the trail. One man asked me to pay $5 and sent me on my way with no written permission. After 2 grueling wet and windy days hiking alone through the Ecuadorian highlands, I learned that this man did not do his job. Because of his laziness, or perhaps his ignorance, I was forced to leave with a random person in the middle of nowhere upon reaching the next checkpoint. If you plan to hike the Ruta Del Condor, be sure to officially register and get written permission at the El Tambo control to avoid having the problem I did. Cotopaxi here I come, but from a different angle now! 🇪🇨
