I NEVER would have thought I'd see what I did in Arkansas that week.
I spent an entire week criss crossing the backroads of this state, just driving around, talking to people and seeing what this place was all about. Rural Arkansas is a trip.
I saw some big cities, small towns and all sorts of interesting stuff!

I 100% agree. Look at the shootings going on. It's not the guns, it's dysfunctional families and communities not holding their members accountable. Then in turn they ask to give up more control to the government. If you want freedom, you need to govern yourself.

Kudos Nick. Accurate depiction of small-town Arkansas. As a native Arkansan, your assessment was spot on. Arkansas has a lot of moving parts and is a much more diverse state than most will understand. We do have a great deal of backward folks without question, but we also have a great deal of amazing Christian people that are authentic. If you are a higher wage earner in this state, you can live extremely well. No state is perfect, but the much lower cost of living is a huge plus. I have benefited greatly from remaining here most of my life. Thank you for an excellent perspective!

There were a lot of factories in Arkansas pre-NAFTA that kept folks working. Harrison AR (mentioned in the video) had a Levi's plant and about an hour south of there on HWY 65 in the town of Marshall was a shirt factory that employed a lot of people. After NAFTA, those companies took their production overseas and that is why you see so many dried up small towns all over Arkansas. It wasn't just farming that employed people. Arkansas is not a union state and companies found cheap labor there. My mother was from that area of Arkansas.

We cleaned 2 properties and are using as rentals; third property is where we built a RV pad we use as our residence when in Arkansas. We are duo residents of California/Arkansas and prefer life in Arkansas any day over California. We have a business in California that keeps us from making the move permanent. Northwest Arkansas is a hidden gem, Walmart, JB Hunt and Tyson Foods are all Headquartered there plus the University of Arkansas, GO RAZORBACKS. The people are amazing and life is free and easy. It is truly the opposite of California and just as beautiful but clean. Over the 5 years of owning the properties the values increased 5 fold and are continuing the trend. One things for sure we love supporting the small businesses they are often so much better to support!!! Come back sometime Nick! I can show you around Yellville/Summit area!!!

Hi Nick. When you get a chance, check out Crawfordsville , Ely, and Marion AR. They have an interesting place in history. Crawfordsville was a part of the chittlin circuit (Live music and gambling in the 40s and 50s. B.B.king, Albert King, JohnnyTaylor, and more performed there. Hard times have hit the area. Black water sewage problems like Flint and Mississippi. Elvis is said to have owned a home there.

Regardless of whatever your personal beliefs may be, the pastor at the Baptist Church is right. The most important thing is family and taking care of each other. Lack of money will make you miserable, but after you make a certain amount of money it doesn't make you happier. It can't fill certain things you are missing from your life. There are many wealthy people who are miserable.

You are telling me folks living in those hovels are happy? Jesus. If you would have anything, you would have to worry about the crack heads/ meth addicts taking it. I thought this was just about as pitiful as can be. Look at who they elect to be their leaders! Blah!

I grew up in Memphis, just near Arkansas. Sounds about right. Agriculture is big around the Mid-South. We'd see ads for soybean growing on TV. I've lived in Atlanta since then, and I can't say I've seen that here. Also, eastern Arkansas is very deprived. Some small rural towns there are almost all but abandoned. It's really depressing. Not that Memphis itself is much better. As someone from that region, it is really frustrating and I'd love to see it fixed, but it would take a lot of work. I don't know what could be done. The fact we're growing rice for China when parts of our own country is in dire straits is pretty, as us Southerners would say, sorry. If Arkansas looks bad to you, just across the Mississippi River from Arkansas is Tunica County, Mississippi which was when I was a kid the poorest county in the nation. The county seat of Tunica actually had an open sewer that they euphemistically called Sugar Ditch Alley. Things were really bad there. Most of the kids there went to a struggling, underfunded public school while the relatively rich white kids that remained there all went to a private segregation academy. Of course, the decline of agriculture in the region hit Tunica just like AR. They legalized gambling in Mississippi to try to generate some kind of economy (based on BS, of course) but Tunica is still poor. They actually had to tell local residents how to even put on a suit and tie when they applied for jobs at the casinos there when they opened.

Arkansas native here. Sixty years ago these places were robust communities. My mother grew up in Marianna and it certainly didn't look the way it did in this video. I moved out of state after high school but I've always harbored the hope that I could return someday. Right now it doesn't seem too promising. Makes me sad.

Love your videos Nick! One place you missed that I highly recommend going to is Hot Springs Arkansas. They have a lot of cool history, and they are famous for the world's shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade! You have got to see that!! They are also having many events around the solar eclipse next year, and hotel/motel rooms, and campsites are already filling up. The man to talk to there, is my lifelong friend, Monte Everhardt, owner of American Tire and Wheel. He participates in the town's events, and appears as a Leprechaun, and Santa Claus just to name a couple. He is a down home great guy, and loves to talk about his town. I promise you won't be disappointed. Safe travels!

I like El Dorado, it looks like a busy town. I wouldn't mine living there, I could by a house all cash. Not like here in California. Where there are a lot of Homeless because It is hard to find a house less than $800,000 out here. I have neighbors that are moving to Mexico. They are retired and say homes in Mexico are very cheap. In Cabo San Lucas you can buy a house with a pool for $300,000 all cash. They have everything there like Sams Club and Costco. The fruit and vegetables are fresher there.
