Smaller cities and towns in outlying areas outside St Louis City / County are booming. New construction is increasing. Missouri became a state in 1820 after fulfilling all of the requirements laid down for statehood. Congress just didn't accept Missouri's constitution that no free negro or mulatto may remain within the state, which was the sole right of the state to declare, and refused to seat the representatives and senators from Missouri in the fall of 1820. Correspondence went back and forth until 1821 when President Monroe intercepted this correspondence and declared Missouri a state in the union. Nothing changed in Missouri's constitution between 1820 and 1821. In 1822, Missouri's legislature formulated The Great Seal of the State of Missouri. The last addition to it were the roman numerals, MDCCCXX (1820).

Some things I'd like to add: Another interesting thing I heard about the 1904 Olympics, is that during the marathon they gave them hard liquor/whiskey instead of water, not sure how accurate this is but it is a rumor. Missouri's 200th year of being a state is coming up, I believe sometime this month. Another fun fact is that Kansas City actually existed before the state of Kansas, they were just named after the same thing which is the Kansa Indian tribe. No, Kansas City did NOT steal the name from Kansas state lol About Missouri politics, the people from both sides are bad. I think they're focusing more on fighting each other than fighting problems like the crime rate in St. Louis. The Attorney General Eric Schmitt just recently filed a lawsuit against St. Louis and Kansas City for the mask mandates, which was a huge deal. St. Louis recently elected their first African-American Female mayor, Tishaura Jones, who campaigned on defunding the police in the city. State politicians in Jefferson City don't like that too much, but instead of cooperating they're just blasting. It's truly sad how divided it is. A few things about our representatives: Josh Hawley was actually born in Arkansas. Cori Bush is sort of like the Josh Hawley but left wing and progressive. The upcoming Senate race in 2020 was rated the 10th most likely to flip which I highly doubt but there is a chance since Eric Greitens is strongly disliked. I'm not a huge fan of Greitens but I also don't really like the leading Democrat, Lucas Kunce. I get polarizing vibes from his campaign. I also personally don't like the politicians like Sam Page or Mike Parson, people from both sides are pretty awful. I live in the St. Louis suburbs. I'm in High School, and was born here. I plan on staying. Some places I'd reccomend to live would be suburbs of the cities or smaller cities like Columbia. I wouldn't reccomend living in a touristy area like Branson as the constant flood of visitors would be obnoxious. Living in the actual cities can be dangerous depending on the part, however I've lived in St. Louis City before and haven't been shot, and it's pretty cheap for a major city too. The bootheel is pretty poor along with Poplar Bluff, cities like St Joseph are also sort of rundown, but not too bad. College towns like Kirksville and Rolla are decent. Springfield is sort of like a more conservative, smaller version of St. Louis. Crime is pretty bad there, too. Anyways, good video! Missouri is a great state if you look on the positive side of things, like the nature and food. There is a big redneck thing goin on here, but the people are hard working and really polite. I've been in the sticks before and not once did I ever run into a rude person down there. Looking forward to the unboxing cities series and seeing if any Missouri cities are on there lol

Clayton is very safe and VERY expensive. It is the county seat for St. Louis County, NOT St. Louis City, which are two completely different things that people don't know about. St. Louis is bound by a charter that does not allow it to grow or incorporate other municipalities around it. St. Louis City is considered it's own county. This was set up right after the Civil War, and I can't remember why.

The Civil War started over several reasons, just like it is about to start again. The main reason for the war was the South being taxed to death by the more populace North. Taxation without representation, remember that one? Slavery was a peripheral topic. It would be like blaming the civil war coming today on say Mexicans unhappy with wages. Well I'm sure that most of them are unhappy. We all are. However, it is not the reason our cities are burning down.

Though not from there, I lived in STL for nearly 20 years. Here is STL, in a nutshell: "If you are from here, you are one of us. You are, and will always be, welcome. If you are not from here, you are NOT one of us, and you will NEVER be welcome." The CEO of Southwestern Bell moved the entire company to Texas because he grew tired of the STL mentality. Don't believe me? Move there. The FIRST question in every conversation will be: "Where did you go to high school."

Jefferson Davis sent emissaries to Missouri to determine whose side they would join in the Civil War. The emissaries returned to Davis with their report which they summarised in one statement - "Their hearts are with us but their cattle and blue grass are not". And they hadn't even heard of what Robert E. Lee's army would do three years later on approach to Gettysburg (they confiscated the farmers' cattle and just about everything else).

@@NickJohnson I don't think I read "Tom Sawyer" really ever, though I may have tried when I was in grammar school. Now, with "Huck Finn," I first read that in sophomore English class in high school, then for a second time about 15 years ago. The reason for the reread: "Huck Finn" has been in hot water ever since it was published. Louisa May Alcott wouldn't let it in the Concord, Massachusetts, library because she thought it was "vulgar." I reread the novel after doing a paper in grad school of challenged books. "Huck Finn" ranks as #5 on the list. Ernest Hemingway said that "Huck Finn" was the best novel ever written by an American and that all later novels derive from it. When I did my second reading, I thought the novel was absolutely awesome. The novel is really Twain's masterpiece. I tend to think labeling something as "children's literature" is bogus anyway. A good story is a good story is a good story. (Thanks, Gertrude S.!) I enjoy reading "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Wind in the Willows." Your new format for the states is really, really great, Nick.
