I know a woman who got a B in her history A level, and she is a history professor at Oxbridge. She overshot the exam and wrote a complicated and clever argument which, in the end, is not what A Level History cares about. This may have been what happened to you, since even though humanities are subjective, at A Level they seem to be all about ticking boxes. Your A* in maths is incredible though, a huge well done and don’t let this get you down too much!

This is really inspiring. I’m also somebody who puts a lot of pressure on myself academically so I get that there likely isn’t much I can say to make you feel better, despite the fact your grades are genuinely still amazing. I know how frustrating and confusing it is when you put so much work in and it feels like it doesn’t pay off, even if you really deserve it! If it helps, my brother missed a grade last year in his A levels and we were all devastated for him. He still had great grades and could get into a good uni, but he resat and is about to go to his dream uni for law this year, so it definitely can be done and he’s more mature now and I think it’s for the best he didn’t go to uni right away. He learned what it was like to fail, then succeeded. I’ve just finished my GCSEs but I’m definitely going to watch your revision videos going into A level as you obviously get amazing results and have a very mature mindset that it isn’t the end of the world if the exams don’t go your way, you just need to move on and take the next best steps for yourself. This is definitely the kind of channel a student like me needs and I just want to say a massive congratulations on your two A*s and best of luck on the resit :) Sorry I made this comment so long btw lol

Even though it is hard I believe you could do the resit if you learn from why your exam ended up in you getting a B. I did the International Baccalaureate which doesn't allow you to request your papers back and although I got a 7 in history (IB is 1-7 so it's the highest grade equivalent to an A*) I would have liked to see paper 2 back from English as I was expecting a 6 on that one and instead got a 6 in paper 1 and a 5 in paper 2. Thank you for your concise GCSE videos my brother found them helpful and along with my tips for history he got 8 grades at 7-9 with only 2 below. I am also taking a gap year due to mitigating circumstances in the running of my course in year 13 that led to it being discontinued at my college and am hoping to defer my offer to study my history BA at KCL. I got 10 9s and a 5 in English lang for GCSE. I don’t know what to do I have never done that badly and I’m 4 of even a 6 which isn’t enough for oxbridge. I feel like I’ve screwed up my entire future as I go to a highly academic school so the 5 won’t be forgiven and lots of people have been telling me re sits don’t count for much. This being especially as other than being sick on the first exam day, which was not noted by the school so will have no impact, I have no extenuating circumstance.
@user-hc4yb9to5s2 ай бұрын
Can you stop for a moment and look at the 10 9s you have under your belt? That’s even more than the average number of GCSEs students study. I’ve gotten 5 9’s and 4 8s and I’m studying one of the most competitive courses (architecture) at Cambridge. As long as the 5 isn’t in the subject you want to study in sixth form, then YOURE FINE! tbh this kind of negative “guys I have 10A** I’m not good enough!” energy isn’t even what Oxbridge, or any top unis, want. I am not comparing myself to others because as you probably know grades are looked at in context so my 5 in context does not look good however some people 9 7s and a 6 in context are the same and maybe even better than my grades. Finally, I think what top unis don’t want is people who content themselves on doing worse than their potential.I would personally rather have someone who is upset and determined to improve rather than someone that simply contents themselves because some others may have done worse…

I've just looked at the official sources of Oxford and Cambridge and they *do* excepts resits, but some colleges are more lenient than others. Cambridge specifically would like to know why you are resiting and discourage those with multiple retakes from applying as their main mode of assessment is via examination. With two *As already in the bag it proves you are capable of success in assessed exams. The B was just a fluke. Study the mark scheme and look at your script in tandem with your History teacher to try and find out where you missed crucial marks. I would still definitely consider applying to Oxbridge if you think one of their courses would suit you. You could never email them to gage their opinion and maybe even get some reassurance. I know you run an academic study you are of course disappointed with the B. I've been 1 single mark of an A before and it doesn't feel good. But, you should still celebrate and be proud of your achievements, outside of your context A* A* B are still stellar grades. Thanks for your transparency, unfortunately not all academic journeys are linear and this will help future students that hit a roadblock, find a way back.
