This is a relatively common scam in the art community. I’ve sold commissions to many people and have had several tell me, after I send them a WIP, that they’ve found a better artist who would do it cheaper and begin to nitpick every little thing to make me feel like my work is worth less than what I sold it for. I believe they do this in hopes for a discount or even free work whilst originally acting kind before getting more pushy. In the call, they likely put on an act to make you feel more obligated to conform to their unreasonable demands. Either way, even from their review, they kind of seem whiney, so I’m not sure how much people will take it seriously when considering to work with you.

I’ve been recording for 4 years and producing my own stuff for about 2 years it is always difficult as most musicians know to like allow a producer to “produce” but I assume by now anyone willing to produce my work probably doesn’t want to tie their name to shit. I’ve felt the same way where I thought my vocals had way too much reverb or they were just so buried in the mix. However at the time I was unfamiliar with recording or giving a good performance. (Staying on key or on time) but I was younger so I just thought “yeah that’s raw, that’s the shit.” Lmao but i definitely feel if you’re an artist you should look for someone that’s already in the scope similar to what you do. AND JUST LIKE HOPE THEY ARE PUSHING YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Super respectable of you to actually spend the time to call him and give him advice just seems like the guy may have been unsure of what he actually wanted and when he was putting money into his song that was most likely an unfinished song he was like ahhhhh I’m gonna back out lol. Good job my dude! Can’t wait to read your response to his review.

Ive been dabbling in music for 20+ years and can make pro mixes now; every time I think of getting more serious with mixing for people I do the math….so many hours in hopes to please someone for a few hundred bucks when I can drive a truck for a few hours and double that and get fresh air. I really wish music was more profitable like the old days but like every market, is saturated. Bummer

Wowww the client Is definitely working off their ego. This won't take them far. Building relationships is the name of the game, and patience is what's needed in growing any buisness and collaborating, I'd say there is fault to taking the project and promising a competitive mix without the right files, but I understand accepting the challenge to enhance and fix what's there to bring it up to speed. It's not your job to polish shit so the client went in with high expectations with no backup and then didn't trust your professional advice on a solution so it's a shit show. It's a good thing you dropped the project let them clean up their own mess.
