I Spent HUNDREDS on FIVERR So You Don't Have To: Fiverr Review

This is Fiverr, a services marketplace that primarily offers a platform for selling and buying digital goods and services in increments of $5. These services and products vary greatly in quality and cost, and category. It’s like ebay meets craigslist for digital services. I’ve seen plenty of KZbinrs sponsored by this service in their videos. So, I decided to take $500 of my own hard earned money to try these products and services people are offering on there, to see if it’s actually any good and to, well, try to improve this channel. Did I manage to spend all $500, are the services good? Let’s find out with a little review.

The services Fiverr sells provide a business focus, with each gig you buy meant to improve your business. You can find services for all kinds of jobs on the platform. Basically, the services are so varied, that you’re bound to find something that meets your needs for your business.
So let’s talk about Gig Sellers first. Just click into any of Fiverr’s categories and you'll notice similar services being offered at different prices. If you click into any of these, you’ll see different examples of the seller’s previous work. This page basically details all the information about the gig and also shows the different packages available for purchase. Sometimes though, there will only be one price or even subscriptions available. Some sellers can also provide additional items that aren’t included in the package price like faster delivery times.
For every gig sold, Fiverr takes 20% of the price. Let’s compare it real quick to Ebay. Ebay, lets you, as a seller, list 200 items for free before charging a small fee. And when your item finally sells, ebay takes anywhere from 2-12%. 10% for most goods. That’s roughly half of what Fiverr charges. To make things worse, not only do they take 20% of the Seller’s revenue, but they charge buyers a service fee as well. Meaning, they’re double dipping into both the Seller’s profits, and the Buyer’s pockets. Fiverr charges a service fee on top of the tip too. Which irks me. They also take 20% of tip. Don’t get me wrong, I believe Fiverr deserves to be paid for providing the platform and being the middle-man and ensuring the revision system is being adhered to. But it really seems like the sellers on the platform are getting the short end of the stick and deserve to be treated better. This is probably my least favorite aspect of the platform. But enough ranting about Fiverr’s cut.
Through Fiverr I ended up only spending 260, depending on what services you’re looking for you might be better off spending it on something else outside of Fiverr. I know I primarily focused on creatives with what I purchased on Fiverr, with video and photo related services, but I also looked at some business-related ones and they all seemed like plausible services I could see people buying to improve or efficientize their business. I also found the reverse, like some services that looked like a bad value. People sell shout-outs on Instagram, Twitter, and KZbin on here. Which I honestly think is a bad way to grow a following. And that’s a problem I see with Fiverr, there are a ton of cheap services that just aren’t very good services. Some of these sellers are preying on people who don’t know any better and charge a fee to do it for you, like video intro templates. It's the wild west out there in terms of types of services and quality of services. So you have to really be careful about what you’re purchasing out there and look through multiple sellers at different price points to get a feel for what you’re getting for your money. Seriously be careful. There are fantastic sellers out there, so try your best to find those.
Let’s discuss Fiverr alternatives. There’s upwork which works in reverse. A buyer posts a job or project and freelancers compete for it and overall is much more professional. And another service Freelancer works similar to Upwork. Fiverr is the cheapest of the 3 for sure, but both Upwork and Freelancer filter out some of the sketchy services.

Your presentation was very SLOW to get to the point, and extremely boring. I VERY MUCH agree with you regarding Fiverr fees and especially the "tax" on tips...I had prepaid a certain amount into my Fiverr account and was so happy with my results that I tipped the seller the rest of the amount in my account. But now I ended up having to re-upload more funds because Fiverr wanted to have their cut of the seller tip... Very annoying.

Been commissioning artwork on Japanese sites lately, and prices and quality really varies too! Also they accept no revisions and no communications apart from the original request. But I'm very happy with most of the pictures I've commissioned.

@@JimmyTriesWorld When I reached out by e-mail (for my profile picture) there was updates along the way with my input. However, the two sites I've used (Skeb and Pixiv) are more of services for fans of those artists to get them to draw some character you like in a situation you like. The artist in question keeps the copyright and publishing right of the work. They have a published recommended price and a short to non-existant details about what they accept. You send your text and your price, and then it's up to them to either accept or reject. No discussion of details or price. It really depends on the artist whether they publish your requested work to the general public fully, partially or not at all. Also, whether you get just png-file or a fully customisable psd-file. Imagine if you could get one of your favourite singers/bands to do a cover on one of your favourite songs, or write a song for your wedding. While it is written for you, they keep the rights to the song and may play it as they like, or put in on their CDs. It's not so much of you commissioning artwork for your profit (for your channel/social medias etc), as much it is "I really like this artist and this character, and I would pay money for it to exist in this world". (sorry for the long incoherent reply, I had one too many glasses of wine)

I've used fiverr a few years ago, but not for business needs. the first time was an art commission and the second was some simple photo editing that I didn't feel comfortable doing myself. the art commission I went with one that I liked the art style of and I was quite happy how it turned out. with the photo editing though, it was very hit-or-miss. I paid two different sellers with the same price of $5 I think, just to see how it would turn out. I accepted both works but you could tell one was better than the other. (crisp lines, seamless blending, etc) I think that just speaks to how the overall platform is and you just have to be really careful with where you put your money, especially now knowing how high their fees are... I didn't know at the time.

I got 16 orders in one year. I think my fees are too high for fiverr. What do you think should be the average fee per order? Say if an order takes 2 days to complete or maybe 3. Some even take one day to complete.

This was really informative. I've never used Fiverr, but it's good to know there are some great services available there (too bad the sellers get so much taken out of their pay though). Ray Chen (violinist) has a hilarious video where he pretends to be a violin student looking for virtual violin lessons on Fiverr. I couldn't believe how little the violin teachers were charging.

You are absolutely correct about the outrageous fees fiverr charges from sellers and buyers too. And not only that, fiverr pays the sellers so many days after the project is being delivered. and when we have to take out money then also a service fee is charged by Paypal etc. And they always favour the buyers. it has happened to me a couple of times. a buyer got all the work done and then refused to accept the delivery. 5-6 times this has happened with me. and then the fiverr support without even going through the work, chat, offer given to the buyer, what he asked for and what was given... went ahead and refunded the amount. when asked why this happened! they simply said we can't force buyers to accept if they didn't like. ok I agree. but why will the seller provide all the services for free? they took the money and the work. I still see such buyers using the 'work' on their websites till date, without even paying 1$, and fiverr staff is just taking service, etc fees from sellers. it is as if we are working for fiverr only. the problem is that they have... kind of monopoly. and that is why they are doing so. i am really upset due to these things. fiverr NEVER supports their sellers and always takes the side of buyers, even if they are wrong.

Man 20% fee. And than you still have to pay taxes and more depending on where you live. Over her un Germany you would have to pay like 20% fee 20% (which you can get back at the end of a year) and what come out you inks get 40%. So from a 100 bucks you are immediately left with 24 quid. Wonderful. Of course I see the taxes are put on top of the price. But still you get the jist. It is no Really viable in Germany to have lower prices. Consequently you need to be really good and market your services really good. And trying to compete on a platform meant for micro business and private people. You are not selling anything.

Why you don't mention that uber and lyft charge almost 30%. Also you said that you purchased softwares by yourself and created your own videos and that you would recommend to do instead of spending on Fiverr. don't forget not everyone is tech person and also not everyone has the time to do this.

@JimmyTriesWorld I’m glad you found some nice sellers on Fiverr. I buy from Fiverr all the time and while I have worked with a few nice sellers, there were a bunch that I thought were scammers. I ordered a gig from a user called prasetiakun and he charged me the price of his premium package plus a $15 ‘extra detail’ fee which I didn’t even ask for. And a few sellers like mr1thonk, Arzemi, and x2draws who rudely told me to get lost claiming that they were “too busy” when I asked if I can order from them. Plus there was a seller recently who offered $45 for his premium gig but he tried to charge me $130 and told me the $45 was a “idea fee”

Wow that sucks. I am a seller on fiverr too but I always try to do the job for the least possible rates to give best value to the buyer.
