Georgie boy, as someone who's shot studio for years and used to shoot on the RZ67 in studio, a few tips for you to save you time/money. Get a backdrop stand and rotate that backdrop to the left, closer to the door so that you have the window to your back, this will give you the space you need to get full length and a better space to work within. This will let you get your lighting a little further back which gives a more even coverage and ways to change up the image so you don't get bored. Lighting - a great and simple way to light this and make it look like natural light is to take the softbox off the strobe, point it at the wall beside you or behind you (possibly with a 7" reflector) and blast it, you now have a light source that's enormous and beautiful without needing a lot of extra modifiers. Backdrop - I know you love that warmer look, but if you invest in a backdrop that's closer to the white side of the colour spectrum and use either a warming filter or just edit in warmth for the golden look and you will easily have a much brighter workspace, like insanely so! The Floor - If you can, get a tin of white concrete paint and get that sucker painted, again, it will make it a much brighter space, far more inviting to work in and easier to control the lighting without having to light extra to overcome what the grey takes away. It doesn't cost much and will really transform the space, again, if you are aloud to do this. All in all have some fun, enjoy the studio and just keep shooting!

When I was studying lighting in theatre, we often would pick items (like a still life) and then given only say, 4 light sources, and could put as much or little gel to get back lighting, side lighting...etc. And I liked a clear trash bag we had over some items, so when the multcolored light hit it at various levels, it gave an even more 3 dimensional to the scene. Like a fanciful spread in say Vogue, as your foil around the head was, that yielded a serendipitous shot. It would have been cool to see the model wrapped in the foil like armor or a metallic toga. Something to play with, "theatricality" in a shoot. Not just straight portraiture.

Those natural light portraits are faaaar more appealing to me, but that's the beauty of opinions and subjectivity. I'm not a big fan of that perfectly even studio lighting look.

I think it's also to do with the depth of field, typically a shallower depth is more appealing, so maybe it's worth doing a side by side with the exact same settings

@@NegativeFeedback shallower depth of field is probably part of it, but I also love the textural value of the deeper shadows in the natural light photos. As well as the non-perfect shadows on the wall. All of these things together just give the natural light photos a more intimate vibe that I love, whereas the studio light photos feel more polished. Which of course can be a good thing too. But in a direct comparison of intimate vs. polished I'll probably always go for intimate.

really interesting at 5:15, and its likely not only because of the different light sources (natural vs. strobe) but perhaps you were also at a different aperture for each, but when working with something as bright as the strobe there's so little contrast that you can pack so much detail color gamut wise in between the highlights and shadows - it almost looks like these are on two different cameras

That DIY series sounds really interesting. I like the combination of the collaboration with the model, the improvisational nature of the shoot, and the chance to do some really creative stuff with the limited constraints of what is bought. It’s a curious thing that one often finds the most inspired and creative moments when limits are imposed. I predict this series will produce some of your most memorable and unique photos. About shooting from below: you need to compensate with their posing, to bring top (head) closer to the lens - body proportions will improve and you will have a strong, 'monumental' portrait (Peter Hurley's main tips help with that, also check Platon's portraits...)

The set building idea is really cool, I’d be down to watch it! And if styling is a part of it as well that’d also be something you could get better at haha. And something like a set theme for each episode would be cool, like ex. “Steriotype” or a “capturing a feeling”, make it personal! Also if you ever do a shoot with an experimental setup, a live stream with just a camcorder in the corner would be interesting, like a fly on the wall type thing

George - As someone who has and continues to shoot professionally since 1987 as a documentary, street and environmental portrait photographer (and started in 1977), IMO the available light photos have more depth, character and a quality about them that strobe can't replicate so I beg to disagree with your assessment of which version looks better ;-) Having said that, I'd like to see some of these examples converted to black and white and you may end up changing your opinion of which lighting version looks better(specifically the young woman wearing the black leather coat and blond highlights in her hair). I came from shooting film when that's all there was and after discovering your channel a couple months back, I've started shooting film again after 20 years. Recently I acquired a second hand Horseman 985 view camera with a 6x9 120 roll film back and using a Fuji 180 f/5.6 view camera lens for portrait work (planning on getting a matching 90mm for a wider view). Using XP2 120 film to ease back in, the image quality of the analog images when compared with the digital ones I've shot along side surpass the digital versions. Even my subjects have commented that the analog hybrid (shoot film, scan the negatives) images are their preferred versions. Thanks for your channel, it has lit a fine under my back side to go back to a slower, more mindful way of shooting portraits and landscape work, although I have had to make peace with digital for now when shooting documentary and street images. Next step, shoot some Porta 400 and see what comes of that.

Dude I am having the same trouble with the rain atm. I live in Derby and the rain has been relentless and with it being December, lighting is in short supply. I also have access to indoor space, but it just isn't the same. The outdoors has character and the scene is always changing. Indoors is boring.
