When I was in high school, we had an industrial arts class and I was using the power shaper on a class assignment and I was watching it chip chip chip away on the steel, fascinated by the curls of blue tempered steel being thrown at each pass, when one of the curls flew straight up my nostril and I heard it sizzle and smelled the burning flesh and I was hopping around in agony trying to get it out. Digging in my nostril with my fingers, pulled out a good one inch long curled sliver tainted in blood. Good thing I was wearing safely glasses, I suppose. Boy, did the teacher laugh for a half hour

Hi that's a lovely little piece of British machinery you have there. I think the fact it is manually powered gives you more pride in the Parts you produce with it. I must admit I feel a little jealous as I would love to own one. After this it's straight off to that website you mentioned to see what little gems I can find. Anyway take care my friend and thank you for sharing this with us. 👍👍👍.

It looks like someone has fitted a dial to the vertical feed. The lead screw on my Adept no.2 had a 1/16" pitch leadscrew which made fitting a decimal imperial dial impossible. The table on this machine is preferable to the Perfecto.

It’s a nice quaint tool. Thanks for sharing it with us. Unfortunately, given my level of patience, after the third or fourth stroke of the hand crank, I found myself asking, “I wonder how much more it would cost if powered.”
@turboconqueringmegaeagle90063 жыл бұрын
Ha, I'd expect nothing less from a man called fast eddie. Two advantages with this over a powered unit, I can pack it away and just get it out when I need it and with cutting keyways I can sneak up on my final size but facing a big lump of steel would suck.

@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 you're right. and that is a great feature not possible with a powered tool. it's the same difference between using a hand-loading tools for primers and a multi-stage press for priming.....you get a lot better feel with the hand tool, as with this, I am sure. Nice little hand shaper... Couple of observations... 1. You don't have a full set of Whitworth spanners? That's an OUTRAGE!!!!! ;) 2. Isn't the cutting tool supposed to be the other way around, just like a lathe tool?

It's a peach, I've got a traveling tool box I keep out the way in case I have to do a job on a de haviland or some other relic, I try and keep everything separate. The cutter is set up for doing internal stuff like keys and splines and the tool holder isn't big enough to take any of my lathe tools.
@BensWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 Out of interest, where did you get it from? Also are you sure about the cutter? Surely the point should be at the leading edge as they cut on the forward stroke not the backward one?

@@BensWorkshop I just put a saved search on eBay 8-10 months ago and finally what I wanted turned up, chap was up in Leeds. I got two identical tool holders with the machine, I'll make some more at a later date but these are perfect for internal work like splines and key ways, the horizontal post you can see has a grub screw and that secures the very small cutter in it's underside, facing forwards but 1/4 back from the nose of the post, unfortunately not long enough for my needs so I'll do a video of the new one and you'll get a better idea of what I'm on about.

I also have one of these but have eschewed it in favour of a Perfecto though that fails to live up to its name. The tool bit that you are using in this video is for cutting internal keyways and a more rigid bit is called for in most operations. You can machine bits for the Adept from 3/8"square high speed steel. 'Lathe And Shaping Machine Tools, by Duplex, published by TEE Publishing ISBN 185761 007 5 has details. Also 'Planing And Shaping Simply Explained' by Alfred Marshall also published by TEE ISBN 1 85761 0741 tells you more about set ups and operation.

Nice one I'll have a look for the book. I've tried using lathe tools with limited success, but cutting keyways and splines was the primary reason for getting it. Is the perfecto not made very well?
@532bluepeter13 жыл бұрын
@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 Some Perfecto shaping machines were sold as kits for home assembly and I believe that mine must have been one. It was out of true and both the bed and ram needed grinding but it also has some silly design flaws. The worst is that when the ram is fully retracted the tool is still some way over the table. It is bad enough that the previous owner had welded and machined a heavy box section spacer to move the table away from the bed. Adept however tend to be of rather crude build quality. There is no feed mechanism and there are no micrometer dials. On the plus side you can use larger tool bits at 3/8" square. If you are cutting splines and keyways the lack of feed is of no moment. There are quite a few helpful videos on use of the shaper.
