In this episode of InTooDeep, I am literally in too deep in my 1968 Hatteras 50' that I bought on its side after Hurricane Ian. Now its a race against time to get the boat back together, in the water, and on the way south before snow flys! Can I do it? Tune in for my most epic restoration video yet, where the old Hatteras gets new running gear, major repairs, and a slew of systems upgrades all in preparation for another season of adventuring! When you have 88k subscribers and your video gets almost a half million views, it gives you an idea how many folks enjoy watching your work. It just goes to show what a younger person who dedicates him or herself to learn different trades, and who has the drive to work hard, can achieve. It's great to see, and I hope your videos inspire the next generation of potential trades and craftspeople to find people like you to learn from.

I've been thinking about doing something like this for the longest time, but being from a fishing village and having spent my life on the water, I know what's involved, you need tremendous resources, tools, the space, the time, the money, the know how, it's endless!!! You have such a leg up on any average person with the connections you have, the average person would be overwhelmed!!!! It costs at least 180 a foot to Moore, pay to take out, pay to put in, pay for shore power, the required equipment to do motors on a craft like that is ridiculous. The regular Joe would have to pay about 7 to 10 grand a year just to own that boat while it sits idle, big nut. I admire you young man, this is hard work and enjoyable as F when its going good, so enjoy it while you're young, healthy and have the energy to do all of this because before you know it you'll start moving slower and get more beat up, this takes a lot out of you 😮

Your passion for this Hatteras 50 and all boats shows. I watched all of the videos. I love this Hattie, all original with the best upgrades. Once I saw the video of the purchase I too would have jumped to buy that Yacht! Updated Engines, AC , auto pilot and all you needed was a lot of hard work and the expensive finishing touches to the shafts, electronics and a few other expensive goodies. The off grid electric system was very smart. If you ever bring her back to NYS Canal stop in Fairport, NY. I'd love to build a permanent roof over the fly bridge with you to hold the Solar panels and catch rain water to up the off grid game.

He is a hard worker, but he also has some other qualities-- he shows INITIATIVE. Meaning, he is not afraid of taking on tasks where there is a possibility of failure. Also, he is smart and a quick study. Really, I do not know a single 23 year old with as much amp to his game as this guy has. I would bet my condo that he does not do drugs. He has too much drive. Too much ambition. I also predict he will be a well known guy on youtube within a few short years.

Typical of all haul out projects it never is a long enough time frame. My boat is old, although 20 years newer than Bella, and every time I haul I usually find something like you did with the prop shafts. If you figure a week you need two, or a month you need 2 months. I love the name of your channel it sums up all boat owning!

Awesome channel and great work on the old girl. You’ve got some great skills there. Looking forward to following along. The one thing I’d say being an older fart who has seen some pretty nasty workplace injuries - don’t shortchange yourself on the protective equipment. You’ve got only one set of lungs, eyes, ears, and limbs. Protect yourself and your buddies properly and you won’t be wondering at 50 why you can’t breathe, hear, or see properly. That will seem a long way away to you at your age, but it’s coming. I feel like I was your age just yesterday...Cheers!

The joys of a major refit. I have a 1996 Albin 32+2 that was mothballed and put into storage early 2007. All systems were working at the time of mothballing however I hate to imagine what it needs now. Topsides and hull have cleaned up very nicely with first a strong dishwashng liquid followed by a bleach/water 1-1 combo to to kill off any remaining organic growth on gelcoat. Worked well. Just completed the hull today with 3M cleaner wax. Remarkable comeback. Do it again with Mequires Flagship and it will almost look like factory. The interior will be another story. Engine should come out also for a thorough going over.

Please wear protective gear when working with fiberglass and all those chemicals! Great video with all your hard work. I had a 42' 1974 Hatteras Sportfish and the boat was built like a Sherman tank. Many boats that fall over during a hurricane would be totalled. This is a tribute to how well Hatteras made their yachts! I've tried prop speed and many other methods and it all comes off if you run the boat long distances.

Hi Gus, I just found your channel two or three days ago, the first part of your journey video (Miami to Maine) randomly showed up in my YT feed, so I clicked on it, watched both episodes in a row and just right now finished watching this video. And I have to say it: Man, those three videos were a pleasure to watch! 🙏 I do have the utmost respect for all the blood, work, sweat and money you put into making Bella pretty again, and it pays off big time in my opinion. You know, I‘ve never been into the maritime world at all, I‘ve done a few short vacation boat trips with my parents (we chartered a 52ft MY for 10 days, back in 2010, 2011 and 2012) and for sure, it was a blast. But since then I‘ve had nothing to do with boats or boating. But I really can appreciate and respect the passion you do have for boats and for especially for Bella. 😍 A BEAUTIFUL ship ❤️❤️❤️, I really like the look of her and I would have never ever guessed her age by the first shots I saw from her. She aged really well 🥴🙏 I definitely will enjoy the other videos of her and you so I‘m really glad and happy to have found your channel, I subscribed immediately after the first „Miami to Maine video“. All the best to you and Bella, I‘m really looking forward to watch the next episode about you and your beautiful MY Bella 🙏 With best wishes from Germany 🇩🇪, Philipp 👋 EDIT: I do hope my English „skills“ were good enough to let you understand what I tried to write in this comment 🥴🫣😀

the gift of desperation yields ingenuity, My dad and I built a 55' sailboat in 198o out of steel. His wife sold it after he died. Lost track of it. You have enough mechanical sense not to destroy your boat. It looks it had safety pins in it. The alignment is real tough. Sometimes what seems to be tragedy works out to be a gift.

Now you need to re-target that Port shaft ! I worked with lasers in construction for years before they were used in marine applications. Namely, targeting shafts. I had just started working for Derecktor Marine, It was called Derecktor Gunnell back then. When they sent me to the next yard over (Lauderdale Prop) to show them how to set up and target shafts and cutlass bearings using a laser. Like everyone else at the time, they were still using the old Piano Wire method ! That was in 1984.

My friend, your channel is properly titled. I remember a little about the type of boat you have. It’s a multimillionaire’s personal boat. Not his yacht. This is the one he captains himself with little to no staff. This is the kind of boat that was more personal. His yacht was for more formal situations and was totally staffed. The owner did nothing on his yacht, but as much as he could on his little 50 ft Hatteras. My father had a very nice 33 ft Chris Craft and he was a physician. The 33 was all a physician back in the sixties could reasonably afford. My father wanted a Hatteras, but…So you have taken on a boat that takes the pocket book of a millionaire.

Wanted to tell you, your shafts are not bad friend. As long as the pits are not on a surface that a seal runs on they are completely saveable. The things can be welded and returned or if you are good, ground and sanded back smooth. It depends on skill levels and you did fantastic on the glass work so you could save a lot of cash. I was a career chemistry and trade school instructor until I retired three years ago.. before the demise of the family farm (VT /NH) I saw farm kids with huge range of skills and ambition… but very few in the general population . You are very talented and skilled…and have a hell of a positive attitude…. Keep on keep in’ on

I’ve worked a couple years in the yachting industry and we usually paint that green stuff on the shaft. You should look into doing that.

Bringa back memories. When I was 12 I talked a marina into paying %500 for a storage tiyle on a 25 foot cabin cuiser with a blown engine and had been sunk. They also gave me two weeks to work ok it and a free launch. I anchored it out on bunch of engine blocks, left home and moved in and never looked back. I did odd jobs on boats moast of my life although I seemed to have a callling for delivering sailboats without engines. One yach broker bought pieces of shyt and said here bobby, get her ready for sale. I never got past the 6th grade so I figured that if people were turning their 200 and 300K boats 0over to me with a 6th grade education, I must have something going and just never stopped. I am SO GLAD that shyt is over. Id fix one boat up and they would launch it and give ,me anothjer piece of shyt to fix up. Thgse days were pretty cool. I had a sailboat so if somebody paid me enouigh to stop sailing for a while, I would and I really liked sailing over being shoulder deep in bilge shyt or covered in bottom paint. I never considered myself rich but if I wanted an outboard motor or another boat I baught5 it. I spent moast of my working life sailing around south America because it was harder to find me.

hey Gus, i don't mind the videos being few and far between, they are really worth it great to see you hard it (and working) in another yard, makes you a sort after kind of guy, and useful to have around, and means you must be welcome back any time you visit, earn your keep at the same time, and networking as you suggest, is always a very useful thing to do that trailer hauling your boat out, a crazy thing, what's the engine on that, looks small but powerful to lift the boat up a slope, very neatly done anyway i was going to suggest an air chisel for the cutless bearings, but your all over it, what a man, and great work on the forward one, that's a stubborn mother FR, personally i might have sacrificed the fibreglass and renewed anyways, but again, 10 out to 10 for perseverance and strategy and being the man you are 'in so deep baby' i thought perhaps if you had the shafts you might have refitted at both ends, with the two cutless fitted, the third (forward) one on the shaft at the correct length and simply fibre glassed in place

Gus!! I just had to comment to say how much I admire you. I am most impressed with your vocabulary, lol. You know the term for every single item on the boat "shaft log tubes" and so on. I am learning a TON just based on your casual conversation explaining what every component is and what it does. Me thinks your an incredible smart, high IQ dude with your vocab. I am just devouring your content and learning a ton. I hope you inspire other young people to ditch the grind and being glued to a phone and get out there to push themselves and enjoy experiences just like you are. Anyway, stay humble and continue to be a great guy!!

New subscriber here. Watching these older videos. You must do great work. Those guys at the marina have respect for you and clearly want to help. No doubt that comes from your attitude and work ethic you put forth and the respect you show them.
