I photographed her in the village of Bugnay, Kalinga, in 1977. It was an "impossible" shot, handheld slide film by the light of a small fire several meters from her. She was A Presence even then, I will always be grateful for that experience.

Wow, I was mesmerised by this video. Apo Whang-Od is an incredibly impressive and inspirational woman. You captured the experience so well and I love the vibe of this video, a documentary-esque vlog. I've always wanted a tattoo but to date haven't got one as I keep changing my mind on what to have. A tattoo from Apo Whang-Od would actually be perfect as it takes the difficult decision away and leaves you with something incredibly meaningful. this is amazing! i've seen so many people make vlog about this legendary tattoo artist but they never include the trek to get there. it's understandable that you had to be tattooed by somebody else considering the length of the process and insane queue. also when i heard about the prices like up to 2k pesos i was like that's so expensive but then realize it takes a lot longer to finish, basically it's a whole lot of work so it's actually decent price. it was bright when she started tattooing and already dark by the time it's done, definitely worth paying more. if i decide to do this, i might even give extra tip.

Well the feeling between Sarah's tattoo and Whang-Od were already very different. Sarah's was a lot more gentle, but then comparing to needles you different experience, but then also with the needles there is a lot of difference between the place and type of tattoos. So I can't do a direct comparison. I think having the 3 dots on that spot with machine would have hurt less, but the one on my foot if that was done with machine it would have hurt more...

My 23 year old daughter just got her first tattoo. She wanted to have one made by Apo Whang Od and went to pay her a visit 2 months ago. Unfortunately, the line was quite long. She ended up going to a local artist where we live. But she said she'll go back to have a tattoo from The Legend this year.

@@talesofodyssey Though I have 2 tiny tattoos, my daughter and wife were a little negatively biased towards people who are heavily tattooed. My wife even told my daughter that she should not get one. About 5-6 years ago, Apo Whang-Od and the centuries old tradition of having tattoos in our culture started being a regular feature on social media. It was then that my wife and daughter understood that tattoos are very much part of our cultural heritage and not some rubbish art appreciated mostly by thugs and criminal gangs. Yes. My daughter having her first tatoo made by a local artist in our place is a good thing as well. Happy weekend.🙂

Yeah so someone else mentioned this too so I did a Google Search and found this interesting piece of information: “The Kalinga tribe in the Philippines is believed to have originated from the Kalingas of ancient India. According to historians, the Kalingas of ancient India were a powerful tribe that controlled the region of present-day Odisha. They were known for their fierce warrior culture and skilled metalworkers.During the reign of the Indian Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, the Kalingas were defeated in a brutal war. Ashoka, moved by the horrors of the war, converted to Buddhism and vowed to never again wage war.it is believed that some of the Kalingas, possibly including metalworkers, migrated to Southeast Asia and eventually settled in the Philippines. The needle is made from pomelo tree spines and is inserted on bamboo stick as handle.... you can choose which one to used and all of them will be sanitized before used.

the tattoo from wang od is based on how much you can give. But There are some of her Granddaughters who tattoo priced based on wlthe design. Roughly 6-20 US dollars.

The tattoo from Whang-Od is 300PHP and the others from the other artists really depend on how big it is, mine was 1500PHP. As for the trip this also depends how you go and where you stay. With regards to healing, I had a lot go negative comments on TikTok with people saying I would get diseases or infections. Neither happened… 😂 bot tattoos have healed nicely. Do be prepared that the one from Whang-Od is quite painful, but it is over in no time
