This philippines vlog is NOT your average travel vlog, this is a journey into the unknown and we want you to come with us.
Apo Whang OD born February 17, 1917, also known as Maria Oggay, is a Filipina tattoo artist from Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga, Philippines. She is often described as the "last" and oldest mambabatok (traditional Kalinga tattooist) and is part of the Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group.
She has been tattooing headhunters and women of the indigenous people of Butbut in Buscalan, Kalinga, since she was 15 years old, but the Butbut warriors who used to earn tattoos by protecting villages or removing enemies no longer exist. Despite this, Whang-od continues to practice her traditional art form on tourists visiting Buscalan.
We take the 12 hour road trip in the hope of not just meeting the legendary Whang-od but to be tattooed by her.
There have been many foreigners who have traveled to the north of the philippines on the epic journey but this one is ours and we hope you enjoy this epic adventure and life journey.

I just want to express my deepest appreciation for you guys making this video for us to watch. Steeped in emotion, personal struggles in your journey to the almost inaccessible regions of Northern Philippines, and your feelings in meeting the oldest and last surviving Kalinga tattoo artist, I believe you guys also created an art form here. Take care and may God bless your journey as a family.

So, I wasn’t expecting to see anything different from the other vloggers that’s been there before. Thanks so much for your kind words Leah & Blair, we don't normally get hung up on views and subscribers which is why we don't make "SHOCKED" and "i cant believe" types of video like other who just chase views. But, we would have loved this video to do better than its doing because of the love we put into it, as you know youtube doesn't reward quality it rewards consistency and it's very hard to produce this type of content weekly. We love what we do and will only get better over time and its comments like this that drives us to bevbetter. Thanks again, it means the world to us. Colin & Neli

Been ages since your last vlog but it is worth the wait! I can feel Nelly’s emotion on this feature vlog. Sensing her raw emotions bringing nostalgic moments and until moving forward to more travelling in the future. Usually I would comment on how you both did great job on the videography and research speeches but this time this video has touched my heart because of how Nelly has drawn her feelings towards this trip of yours. I got along as well on the emotions that encompasses this video and this is truly one of your best travel features so far. I like how the camera pan along the sunrise, the rice paddies, the cloud drone shots and you still put in the same thing you always do to immerse yourselves among the locals. Love the “footsteps of Nelly shot” while at the waterfalls with her new compass tattoo.

I knew only time will tell when you’re going to Whang Od, and here you are. I was wondering when your next video will come out since you’re doing lots of editing in your product. Cinematography is alway top notch and how you deliver the story is excellent. I wish some big named company discovers your work as you deserve to get the most out of your efforts. BTW, Sony is a low light king especially when you pair it with fast lens. The scene waiting for the vehicle and waiting for the sunrise would have been a nightmare to pull out if you don’t have proper lighting. Great choice for having the right gear for the requirements.

It was a mission of ours to visit Whang Od and help keep the culture alive. Apologies for the wait but we’re investing a lot of time learning cinematography and finding it difficult to keep up with the time. Sony is a great camera indeed. We have invested in our gear and it is paying back. 🌹🎥😍♥️

I like the narrative from the start of the journey until the end, the shots, the cinematography and the different approach to the story, it is cinematic and interesting, unlike young people going up the village just for the tattoo, you gave an indie film feel to the vlog...appreciate it nomads.

Thanks for the acknowledgement.

It’s ok, people prefer shock and surprise over education and cinematic. We are ok with the views and the subscribers, we just like making films to learn a new skill. We are sooooo new to this and each upload we learn a little more. But saying that, this film is our favourite and would love more people to see it. So please feel free to share it as this helps KZbin understand that people like it. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to watch out little video and writing a comment it’s means the world to us. Colin & Neli.
