Hey Eric! Ross here. The Bd7 line was something I've explored a while ago, after losing my queen with Qh3 on the way to connect 8. After our second Stafford game that never made it to youtube, I started digging deeper and I found a few more venomous ideas, as shown in this game. Qe2 was a blunder that you've played against Bd7 twice, which allows Ne5 and allows black to cramp white's position with Bh3. I'm glad you could get some youtube content out of this, and I'll see you at the simul in Vegas!

It's nice that a higher-rated player than me struggles with the same thing as myself: Converting a position when up on material value, but down on pieces in total. When the losing side protects everything, it feels like there's no progress to be made for the winning side. Seeing higher rated players struggle with this makes me feel a little bit less lonely.
@wunknownbeatbox7980

You also have to remember this is a blitz game. I'm 2200 on lichess, 1800 otb and I still have the same problem, especially with shorter time controls. Ive heard danya talk about this: Just because you're up material doesn't mean converting is elementary... at any level! When you face a strong player, especially someone stronger than you, they're not going to just roll over and die.
@ovietoboreoghre7501

I’ve found that in such positions pawns are the key. Since everything is protected it’s really hard to win any more material, so you have to use pawns to soften up the pawn structure or to try to promote

Congrats to Ross the Boss for finding a trappy Bd7 O-O-O line. It makes sense to shield the d-file so Black can castle and keep up the attack. For White I still recommend 10.f3 and 11.fxg4 (or 11.Bf4)

" I think Qe2 is a reasonably safe option" I've checked stockfish, and this move litteraly makes white go from +5.1 to -2.6, so troubles started from there XD "I think I'm playing for a win now" Stockfish says it's -5.5 for black still, despite the progress Eric made from -13.5 to -5.5. Insane comeback, fortunately his opponent was "only" 1700 elo, I'm 1600 and would probably have lost too despite the insanely great position black had !

Umm, not likely...unless he's 10 years old. He's rated 1700 on lichess which is about 1400-1450 fide. You need a minimum rating of 2200 for even a CM title. All Ross did to find that line is look through previously played games in the lichess database that started out with a Stafford. It's a cool line, but he's no prodigy.
@Sad_Chief
@Sad_Chief 2 жыл бұрын
@@allanshpeley4284 Are all Titled Chess Masters child prodigies? I'm pretty sure they're not. And what I think OP means is for Eric to train Ross so he reachers 2200 ELO which is very much possible at any age in your early youths (20s and before) with hard work, studying your games, learning tactics, getting someone to coach you etc. Yeah, Magnus is a child prodigy but he's the world champion. Pretty sure normal GMs are players who worked really hard for their title(not saying Magnus didn't).
