A year late, but I just found you a month ago, and I'm loving your content. Anyways, what I'm thinking is causing the disappearing blue shells is that the sprite limit is being overloaded. Basically, there's too much stuff in a section of the track. That's also why items disappear sometimes when you go for them. It's not normally an issue in the game, but obviously Item Rain changes that. You can see at 36:27 that as soon as you place the Fake Item Box, the Blue Shell vanishes, because it was pushed out by the sprite limit being hit. It also seems like the sprite limit being hit removes random items, because you'd think it would eliminate the "oldest" item, but that blue shell was probably "younger" than some of the items dropped near there.
