I don't understand. Nyles has a large amount saved in investments. He refers to it as "his," but quickly changes to "ours". Isn't that basically Megan's money that he has squirrel away? Will Megan have access to this account when they are married, or will Nyles continue to claim it as solely his?

I hope I’m wrong but Megan could be the victim of financial violence. I feel like Remit might have missed some red flags here. Megan kept saying things like “I need to learn to advocate for myself” “I have to ask him for my money” “I want to be able to spend my money how I want” Why does she feel like she needs to advocate herself with her partner when it comes to her own money? She also doesn’t seem to feel she can trust him to stop controlling her money once she starts earning more.Maybe this is why she didn’t feel comfortable with him knowing how much more she will be making in a couple of years. I hope Megan sets healthy boundaries with her partner and is able to take control of her own money before it’s too late.

It sounds like he’s doing right by the money and open to her playing a bigger part in their financial planning. She has to overcome her ideology about her past and trust herself more. I can’t say she’s a victim if she doesn’t make herself feel like a victim. She’s badass! She just needs to start believing it. P.S. This was a fantastic episode! I relate to Megan so much and I totally understand the dynamic of being in a family where asking for money is a norm. I am not sure if Megan and Nyles will ever read this, but once I started earning more money and realized most of it was going to helping my family (very unsustainable). I created a "Cushion" account. Every paycheck I put a certain amount in there. If someone in my family asked for money and it was in the cushion account, it was theirs. If I didn't have anything in there, I said no. It was an easy way for me to make a decision without guilt being the number one factor. Not to say that guilt never plays a part, but it has helped me immensely

Megan is such a BADASS!!!! I listened to her childhood thinking of my own. Girrrl, you are doing the damn thing! I know to you it doesn’t seem like anything big, but I’ve learned you MUST celebrate the accomplishments having come from virtually nothing and no support other than your will and determination. I see myself in both of them because I find it hard to spend money on anything other than what I need to live bc I’m always waiting for something to happen or the little savings I have to be needed. Great episode as always. As a corporate lawyer, the one thing I think could’ve been taken into account is that she probably won’t be making those 350k, 400k etc. corporate lawyer salaries. In these big firms, only a very slim minority make partner. Most don’t make it past three years. And it doesn’t have anything to do with your intellectual abilities. The pressure and workload are brutal. The alternative is to go in-house which comes with a pretty significant pay cut. She’ll still be making very good money but if I were her I would beware of fully assuming I’ll be making 3-4-500k in the future.

@@00Dawggg That’s pretty much what they’ve said. She does not have control of her own income or finances. He decides everything and she sounds like she doesn’t trust herself with her own money. You don’t learn financial savvy allowing someone else to control your finances. You learn it by being hands on, using your own agency, and making mistakes that were based on decisions that you made for yourself.

well declaring you don't care what anyone says shows your close-minded ways. so that said you may ignore my take. I'm in the field of DV which involves a lot of emotional abuse and financial abuse. I do care what anyone says so it's how I've been successful with helping women establish boundaries and even escape abuse. I think that after hearing the follow ups and actually reading comments and watching the whole episode, that he may not be abusive. that said, because I am very educated on an abusers value system it wouldn't be a far stretch to assume he is or will become abusive. Two common and horrible aspects of a relationship between young people is making assumptions about how your partner feels and having the expectation that they should read your mind. Speak up and ask questions. If you don't your relationship is doomed.

You have a great touch Ramit, thx for sharing your gift. I so very hope she follows up on your offer on how to deal with the inevitable asks from her mom and family. Having the emotional strength to develop her own habits will be hard enough, much less the guilt coming from the family. The strain on the relationship would be awful seeing random welfare payments going out constantly. It would be a nice episode to see how you advise supporting family while still teaching them to fish and not perpetuating bad cycles.

Full ride through law school, which is notoriously expensive, is AMAZING. I agree with others that she shouldn't bank on making 300k+ per year in perpetuity; as others have pointed out, those jobs end up burning you out quickly, and some people end up getting so overwhelmed they can't keep up and they'll face disciplinary action or job loss. But she is definitely in an amazing place financially, even if she chooses to work for a small firm or start her own practice making less. He is also doing great. I hope they can go forward in their relationship with honesty and support; if they can, they're in a good place for their marriage! It is important, of course, that they both set boundaries with their family. It's very nice that she wants to pay off her mom's mortgage, for instance, but she needs to be firm about what she will and won't give. Becoming the family bank is a nightmare.

I suggest that you both go to therapy individually and premarital counseling if not doing so already. It will benefit you both tremendously. I know this because I got married at 22 and my husband and I grew up with low income and over the past 10 years have been working hard to overcome and create healthier money mindset. My mindset is to spend too much (but also frugal) and my husband holding money too tightly. I hope that you both gain the confidence in each other and yourselves. Don’t be too tight, but make a plan that can give you the freedom to never have to work again. Thanks for sharing your story so inspiring.

I couldo relate to Megan in that just about all of my paycheck went to my husband (at the time), minus things I absolutely had to pay for such as my credit card or before/after school care for my daughter. THEN, I felt guilty to even ask for ANYTHING....even though I strongly contributed to the household expenses. I went without so many times....in the end, he got just about everything as I could not afford an attorney. Now, I am on my own. Own my own house, other good things going on.

Women!!! NEVER, EVER put your money in the hands of ANYONE even your husband!! I can tell you this as a 68 year-old woman who did not take control of my own money in that I contributed to HIS 401K, HIS investments and none of my own. We divorced when I was 50. You CAN end up with little to nothing even after 21 years. You MUST have your own separate money set aside...MUST! Please learn from others mistakes.

So, you have to always anticipate getting a divorce? Why get married if that is how you have to live your life? I mean I understand marriage is not what it was 200 years ago but the idea behind it is you are partnering with the other person, ideally for rest of life, to build a life together. If you are always thinking and acting like it's going to end in a few years then the whole purpose of it mute. I'm not advocating for a woman not to have her own stuff etc but to behave like thos is mine and that's yours and we are just people who live together and even that will probably end seems a little depressing. I dont know,aybe she trust him. What a thought. I don't think people should project their lives onto others. We don't know what their relationship consist of. We don't know why she feels she can trust him. One thing is for sure, money changes people, usually not for the better. Don't get me wrong, having money is great. It is really really great. But, it's can easily put a wedge in a relationship. Main issue is there becomes a power struggle that never existed before. The money becomes the purpose instead the relationship, marriage, having priority. Also, when I say priority it should be conscientious effort from both parties. I've seen a ton of relationships just fall apart due to money. Wife gets money and now she has this thought she doesn't need husband when it should never been about need anyway. Husband gets money and he's like gosh I'm free etc. Why wasn't he free before? What makes him free in first place? It's all messed up. Now, you have people telling the couple how to create more obstacles to a happy marriage, deepening the wedge. How is it helping to basically tell someone not to trust the spouse? I mean if the spouse hasn't done anything that deserves distrust there shouldn't be any reason to even think negative about it. On the contrary, marriage should be about developing deeper trust and bonds. I mean, your vows literally said " til death do us part". Also, I think a lot of people's marriages fail due to bad advice. They have these so called friends telling them they can do better etc, dont need them, why married to them, etc. I hope the couple figure out the best way to see and appreciate one another. I hope they see money as a tool, a really great tool, but a tool. It shouldn't define their relationship? Also, like mentioned I don't know the details of their relationship etc so can't say what other things might be issues. Maybe I did not hear everything but don't think either of them.mentioned cheating, mental and physical abuse, or any othe things that would say, get out of the marriage. Sorry for the spill but have a friend, female friend, facing divorce due to nothing but money. It really makes no sense when you think when they friend first was married and they didn't have the money they ha e now, they were seriously agreed couple. They seemed to really care about each other and worked together to build something. It's really sad.they have been together for 14 years, 3 kids, etc. It's now on the verge. I think they may make it but still.

I watched the whole episode and I still feel really uncomfortable with Nyles behavior and choices in all this. Why did he, at the beginning or their relationship, help Megan learn more by taking that $600 rent money and putting into a JOINT account and having a monthly meeting discussing joint expenses etc?? It still feels very controlling and disrespectful to her. He’s treating her like a dumb child that’s beneath him and incapable of learning. And even if her attitude is “here babe, take all my money cause I don’t trust myself with it” he has a responsibility as a non-creep to do better. Teaching her and helping her rather than save it all away from her reach. Gross dynamic here. She feels powerless when it comes to money because either he wants it that way or at least he’s ok with it being that way. I would have liked to see a lot more questioning of Nyles here.

Seems like they're 2 sides of the same coin - scarcity complex. He tries to save every penny, she was afraid she'd throw all her money away (and did at 18). It's good to see them working through it at a relatively young age, but they'll realize soon enough how much money they're actually bringing in every month. They should probably take another look at that food budget, too, because most people I know that work those hours don't cook.

Another great episode! Love that you brought on a younger couple with difficult financial circumstances from their childhoods. I agree with Ramit’s stance on real estate if it makes sense for their situation especially since I live in Southern California. I don’t know where this couple live, but I’d like to hear more from Ramit on how to consciously plan for buying a home in areas that make more financial sense? Enough shooting down every couple that wants to buy a home. I understand it’s important to fix the hidden scripts about “throwing away money on rent” but I just want to see Ramit talk to people on how to make it worth it to them if they are financially able to. I want to see open dialogue and guidance if it makes sense for them especially since they’re going to be making more money in the future and maybe want to buy a home in Maine.

I loved this segment. Megan and Nyles are amazing in how far they are in life considering their background! Megan needs strong boundaries and emotional strength in dealing with her mom. There is parentfication in how she was thrown in to deal with her moms finances and the shame and embarrassment that came with it all her childhood.

Great episode. Megan is a boss for getting herself into law school and graduating! The parent-child dynamic was a little disturbing, hope she takes her power back. Go get your nails done girl and buy that West Elm! Her fiancé has a pretty amazing net worth for someone so young. Gotta give him credit for that. All in all an amazing couple.

I have been in the situation Megan was in with her mother, that reverse parent and child for financial decisions. It started at 19 years old for me and it was really hard. And its really hard to break free from it. At age 29 I finally set healthy boundaries and was able to get out of that relational dynamic.

Why isn't the elephant in the room not being addressed? Clearly Megan is smart enough to embark on a goal to finish law school. She's killing it! Yay Megan! She's a grown woman capable of achieving great things. She can stop the generational issues surrounding money. She has not been given the chance. Nyles is perpetuating her guilt for his own benefit. He's an opportunist. He wants to control her and her income. This will be amplified when they get married. Myles will continue to suppress her growth. Megan dear, forge your own path to success, both financially and professionally. There's no need to walk 10 paces behind Nyles. Megan you've got this! Be confident in yourself financially, as you are academically and professionally.

I feel like the first 15 min of this it sounds like financial abuse. I hope it clears up thru the video. …him making it that he needs to hold her money, gaslighting that she’s "unresponsible with money, your mom and sisters are so you will be too" - and she has been in someway. But if she’s smart enough to become a lawyer, isn’t she smart enough for him to meet her in the middle and let her make some decisions so she feels empowered?? Asking to hold her money, then spending his extra on fun stuff but not allowing her to spend on fun stuff seems controlling. I’m surprised that wasn’t discussed.

Myles didn’t look so thrilled when she excitedly and nervously admitted to earning $18k/month. Even though I'm older, I had to quit acquiring my Bus. Degree, because I'm having a lot of financial difficulties from high rent and this won't straighten out for a while, I don't think. I'm so glad I listened to this video, I really want to finish my degree and I'll be the first to obtain this in my family. Like Megan, I wanted this all on my own. This is giving me the encouragement to proceed in finishing this.

omg NO, stop sending him YOUR MONEY. I hope she is keeping track of everything she has sent him. You are going to work so much at your new job. YOu need to keep YOUR money in YOUR bank account. He should not be putting her money in HIS savings account. His retirement account in very well funded and she has nothing invested. Why he didn't advise her to put some of the money she sent him to invest it in her retirement account. Because no matter how small the amount is it will be compounded over time. TRUST no one with YOUR money. he could take her money and put it in to a separate account that isn't his savings account. I don't like this and they should not get married so fast. She needs to learn her new job, learn how to manage money first before becoming a wife.
