Not every article of clothing had it, though, just keep that in mind. What of women's fashion? I will be honest and say i do not know. My apologies. Side note! You will also never wear Plate armour on its own. You'll always wear it with a layer of padding. Most common in the middle ages is simply wearing Gambeson, or in the age of the particular armour we're looking at, an arming doublet. Before i explain what that is, let me first clarify. While 2 layers of armour, Gambeson and plate is all you need, knights of the 14th century also wore Mail over their gambeson and under their plate. Mail (What you know as chainmail, but in this age, its riveted, but all simplified to mail.) worked well enough against thrust-type weapons, like spears, the most common battlefield weapon, and arrows, but Gambeson is perfect against blunt damage that maces and warhammers do, and cuts that you can expect from a sword or an ax. With the extra layer of plate, that completely removes the worry of cuts, and minimizes the threat of thrusts, the only woe there is to plate is blunt, which is mitigated through Gambeson. But! If you wear all 3, it is no denying that you'll feel rather cumbersome. It won't stop you, nor will you lumber around like a lot of video games seem to show us, in reality, you'll just tire a bit quicker than if you were just wearing your summer clothes. Still, as armour grew more complex, so came all the different components like, well... the cod-piece. Which if you're still wondering what it looks like, just imagine an armoured penis. It doesn't have to look exactly like one, it could just be a little bulge of armour up front o'er there, but it can be forged to look like one. So, the Arming doublet. What is it? Its basically a mix of mail and gambeson. The mail stems out onto the limbs and lower body, while the core is just padding. Quite efficient and lighter overall. So, to sum it all up. Little hole in the baby maker for the armour over there is reserved for a separate piece of armour called a cod-piece, or simply to allow sitting on horses easier. Armour is worn with 2 to 3 layers of different armour types to mitigate damage from any kind of known battlefield weapon. And arming doublets are cool. As well as Medieval fashion being battering ram heavy. For the nobility, anyway.
