@@EmpyreanLightASMR I guarantee they knew what he's talking about. They weren't cheering for him like that for no reason. They know who he is. Just because they weren't losing their minds when he said that (in the middle of their applause) doesn't mean they didn't get the reference. Colbert's audience aren't a bunch of kids, like those making such silly KZbin comments 🫠

Just in case anyone wants a bit more Smigel + Dana Carvey + Kevin Nealon, they recently appeared on Conan's podcast (Needs A Friend) in the multi-episode script read of Hans and Franz, which was supposed to star Ahnold. I recommend people check it out; it's probably funnier than the movie would've ever been haha. It's on youtube, so you can watch them.

It's insane how they were all connected. I got into Conan because of The Simpsons, I loved Colbert and Correll on The Daily Show and didn't know they were friends since before that, SNL hasn't been funny in decades except for the animations, Dana Carvey gave Colbert his first TV job, Conan and Smigel were on SNL, Brian Stack was on Conan and now he's on Colbert, one of the funniest moments on TV was the Conan vs Stewart vs Colbert fight, Conan was on Sandler's comedy album and Colbert did voices on "Venture Bros." and "Harvey Birdman", every time there was something funny that happened in the past 30 years, it was these guys.

He was a writer for SNL back in the mid-to-late 80s, the first head writer on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and has worked extensively in comedy writing with people like Bob Odenkirk (of whom he is a close longtime friend), David Cross, and Adam Sandler. Also Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, but that legend really needs no preamble.

Triumph isnt just a funny puppet. He was a bridge from "old" comedy - vaudeville & insult comedy - to the new. Since Smigel is one of the most innovative & rule breaking minds in mainstream, network comedy (ambiguously gay duo 😂), it always warmed my heart that he created something that was a nod to the very different styes that came before the 90s, esp the 60s-70s era insult comics. I sense that Smigel is uncomfortable with positive emotional displays lol, being able to say "I poop on you" helps relieve the tension lol ..
