Just came upon your video. Im 44 and I'm still dealing with PE. My 1st symptom was shortness of breath just out of no where. Thought nothing of it as I have Exercise induced asthma and its cold and flu season. My 1st symptom showed up Oct 10th. On Nov 5th my shortness of breath was so much worse, i was coughing but no blood, i had no pain. I had a high heart rate that would not calm down. So i was forced to the ER on the 6th of November and was Diagnosed with Saddle Pulmonary Embolism. Both of my lungs where pretty full. I was started on the shot and my vitals went stupid. I had to be put on O2 the entire night i had to have virals every 15 mintues. I got admitted to hospital than got transferred to a different hospital that i had to be medi-vac to. There my vitals was through the roof so i had to get a surgical procedure done so it was off to a different hospital that could do it. I was placed in ICU for a few days while i was on Heprin and on the shot. I never had the extreme chest pain until i had the shot. No fun at all. After the surgical procedure was done the doctor showed me what they pulled out of my lungs. I was days away from dying, my pulmonary artery was almost completely full. While they where pulling oit the clots they found old chronic clots. So now i have to see a specialist for that. I spent 29 days in 4 different hospitals. I was on O2 for 27 days. I have been out of hospital now for 15 days now and im not having any fun in the recovery. Im dealing with extreme chest pains still, on walks short of breath and at times because of the pain feeling sick. I did get a infection in my 1 lung while i was recovering in hospital. So as for any permanent damage im thinking i might have some just not sure yet. I'm very active i go to the gym a lot, i train a lot as i do obstacle races. Everything is on pause right now which like you expressed sucks.

Hi there, hope your recovery has gone to plan. Just wanted to highlight I have recently had a very similar experience but in my case I had actually gone to my doctor with concerns about a calf swelling but because I am very active (albeit 66 years old - I run, swim, hike, golf, still play cricket for example) and I even said I wanted to rule out a clot in my leg they examined me, said it was mist likely a calf strain and said come back if it gets any worse. A month later I had all the breathless symptoms similar to yours and like you put it down to fatigue or mild illness. Then had major breathlessness when I tried to run ended up in ER and diagnosed with PE. My initial symptoms were disregard because I was not overweight, sedentary or smoker and no cancer but blood clots still affect active people and medics often disregard the signs if you don’t fit their stereotypical presentations. I am in recovery doing well but have been told months to go before I will start getting back to normal activities. It is so demoralising but is helped to know that a. I survived and b. You and other like you are out there. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thank you for sharing your story. I’ve read so many stories similar to yours about doctors dismissing serious concerns and symptoms that warrant more investigating - seems very common for PEs to be missed unfortunately. My recovery was slow at first and it felt like things were never getting better, but it wasn’t linear for me - after a few weeks/months I felt like I was improving a lot quicker. Everyone differs, from what I understand. I’m back to running for which I am grateful for, 6 months on (after speaking with doctors, of course), and have been back to the gym for a few months. I often sit and pause, and feel grateful that, like you, I also survived. Wishing you a quick recovery and you can return to being active soon!

I was seconds away from suffocating from a PE. Having survived, it's interesting how it changes your perspective. What helped me in my recovery, mentally, was listening to an audiobook about Stoicism. Can only recommend that!

I am only 30 and eat super healthy, was mountain bike racing, training every day either gym weights or being in the mountains, have no risk factors and suffered pulmonary embolisms in both my lungs about 3-4 weeks ago. Just like you, for days I was attributing this to some deconditioning, pneumonia or having been recently sick, maybe in my head, until I started coughing blood. I'm a primary care doctor too and it didn't cross my mind I could have PEs till I coughed blood. Grateful I am alive. But this has been difficult to process and on my mind everyday nonstop. I just started biking but I had to take more breaks and take it very easy. Like you, I could not stand the first few weeks not allowed to exercise and then I did it on and off. I'm a horrible patient. I carry oxygen trackers and rest if my heart rate goes up too much. I still await my follow-ups and worry what the future will bring. Thank you for sharing your journey, not a lot of people in our shape and age that have this - just knowing we aren't alone in this and to understand how this affects us mentally, thank you!

Thank you for sharing - I was so scared for the future too, and just wanted things to go back to normal. I have come across a handful of young, healthy people who have had PEs, I wish it was talked about more, I thought it was not for someone like me (to the extent I had even heard of it). I am on the up now six months on, things are finally back to normal, and I am so thankful. Wishing you a quick recovery, and that you can get back to mountain biking again soon.

I have been home from the hospital for about 3 weeks. I had PE in both lungs after a minor surgical procedure. I was interested to hear that you weren't sent home on oxygen. I will be on oxygen at least until I can get see a pulmonologist (I am in the US). The earliest appointment I could get is about 2 weeks from now. So I will be on oxygen for about 5 weeks at least. I am only using it at night and when walking. The blood thinners will be at least 3 months and possibly 6 months. My symptom was pain under my collarbone, which the nurse at my Drs. office dismissed (I inquired about it 4 different times on phone calls and visits). Thankfully, I finally went to the emergency room.

Wow - I’m very sorry to hear your pain was dismissed. The pain I felt during this time was some of the worst in my life. I was very lucky to have a very proactive doctor, as I thought I had pneumonia and had never really heard of PE before (and I didn’t believe her when she told me the x-ray showed I didn’t have pneumonia). She’s amazing and I am so glad she pushed me to get tested. I wasn’t placed on oxygen - my oxygen levels were pretty good, which is why I’m guessing things went the way they did. I’m around 14 weeks post PE now - I’ll get some more answers soon but for the moment, I am feeling so much better. The first few weeks were the toughest, and I was frustrated I wasn’t recovering “linearly” if that makes sense - it was just slow. Lots of mental recovery too, it’s really tough all round. I’m wishing you a speedy recovery from here in Australia ❤️

Chest pain and shortness of breath are huge red flags, this is why it's incredibly important to have taken a first aid class as you learn the symptoms of these life threatening conditions and can help others in case they show symptoms. That you went that long without seeking medical attention is scary, not that i'm trying to shame you because if you weren't aware of what these symptoms could be linked to then it's not easy to know. I hope you are feeling better and make a speedy recovery!

Thank you - you are right! I should have taken it more seriously earlier. I had no idea what a PE was before this - scary how little I knew, and how many people I've met since who have had this (yet symptoms are not common knowledge sadly). I'm so glad my doctor was on top of it. I'm trying to tell as many people of my symptoms as possible to hopefully make others aware so others don't make the same mistake I did.

Oh wow - thank you for sharing your story! I know the feeling of breathless from a walk, especially when it doesn’t make sense with where you believe your level of fitness is at (stairs were doing it for me as well, I would be wiped for 10 minutes!) It definitely changes your view on life - the first few days were quite confusing and overwhelming, but over time it turned into a feeling of gratitude for life. I went to Northern Beaches Hospital, which was great, though I was only there 24 hours. ED there has some incredible nurses and doctors, they were a bright spot during an otherwise scary time. Glad you’re healing and hope you recover quickly

This is so similar to my own experience in late July. I'm 34, and am quite active. I had weird sudden muscular pain up my neck, back and shoulders and then had chest pain on left side when breathing in. Ended up in emergency room - everything looked fine. Doctor got me to do a D-dimer. Doctor called me that night to go into hospital as I had a high alert on my d-dimer. Sure enough they started me on heparin before I'd even had a CT scan, but everything looked fine. Sure enough after high contrast CT scan I was found to have a large blood clot in left lung and a smaller one on my right. No DVT. No obvious cause for it, no obvious clotting disorder found. Looks like I'm on blood thinners for life it looks. The near death experience is life changing tbh.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Similar to you, I don’t have a clear cause (outside the contraceptive pill, which isn’t considered a strong enough cause), and am talking with doctors about the need to continue long term on medication. The near death experience completely took me by surprise, and honestly I’m still coming to grips with it several months later. I feel so grateful everyday that I’m still alive, and that I’ve gotten through this. Wishing you a quick recovery ❤️

Thank you - much better! It’s been about 4 months since everything and I am more or less back to normal. I have some partial explanations of what happened - I have one copy of the Factor V Leiden mutation - however this alone isn’t enough. Could have all been a perfect storm (sitting down more, dehydration, hormonal birth control), but I’m still in the long process of tests and scans to rule a lot out. I’m hoping to give a little bit of an update in my next video!
