Finally a grown up movie. Love it. My favorite John Cusack movie and it's become even more personal to me as I've gotten older. I was definitely the elitist in the record store giving shit to people I thought had poor taste. I didn't even work there, I just had friends who did.

You probably shouldn’t use psychological diagnoses like ‘narcissism’ if you don’t really know what it means

People have been calling other people narcissists loooong before it was an official diagnosis, lol. If people say "you have NPD" they are making a diagnosis. If people call you a narcissist, it's because you're acting like a self-obsessed little prat, which you probably are if you bristle at hearing the word ;)
@beageler8 ай бұрын
To be fair, it's not really a diagnosis, she is not in a conversation with someone and earnestly tells her/him that they're a narcissist. But it is throwing around terms without knowing their significance. It is hard enough to be a narcissist, knowing what I am capable of. But lazy mainstream uses of the disorder feel like devaluing my problems, like in this case, or make me feel like more of a monster, in other cases.

If you think he's a narcissist here, then you should see him in Grosse Pointe Blank. He plays a hitman who returns to his high school reunion.

I'm so glad you got the point of the movie. He is a narcissist. He realized he broke up with her. "I broke up with HER!" And you got that. He learns a lesson. Awesome movie. He learns maybe he should be better.

That's not narcissism. This is on a normal level, narcissism is this on a personality disorder level, a neurosis, a real psychological problem. Not a psychological and developmental hiccup.

Yes, it's a stacked cast, but this was the first movie that made me actually learn Jack Black's name. I checked, he's been in several movies I'd seen before that year, but this is the one that put him on the map for me. Also, there were teen shoplifters and a record store employee that dazzles in concert, so it was a smidge like Empire Records I guess.

She's not "messing with him". She is really conflicted. Doesn't know what she's going to do. You can't put that on her. People are flawed. HE certainly is! I'm a dude and I know I am And so is she. That's why "it's complicated" is a relationship option on dating sites.

And though the movie don't really holds up against the book with all it's nerdy music details, I think they did a good job. Way better than I expected when the movie was announced.

I like Rob a lot as a character (not saying that I approve of his actions as a fictional person). I think both Rob and Laura use sex as a way to feel better about themselves. They both sleep with someone when their relationship starts to collapse. I think it's one of those times when the love and passion works, but the adult side of the relationship is just...broken. Remember that Rob cheated on Laura first and caused her to abort their pregnancy. When she says, "why don't you go an experiment." She means it. She wants Rob to be a whole man so she can come back and have a stable relationship with him. I'm sure him sleeping with other women hurts her, but she just wants him to get it all out his system so she can have a happy, stable relationship. Long story shory, High Fidelity is about a messy relationship with two people who aren't really ready to be together yet. Rob does bad things, Laura may seem manipulative (she wants him to grow up, after all). That's life, though, sometimes love just fits and it's like setting off on a cruise. Other times it's tempestous, but so passionate and great that you enjoy even the storms. I think Dick's girlfriend is a good example of the first thrown in so the audience understands that Rob's relationship isn't normal.

Only saw this once when it came out; I remember Jack Black recommending "Blonde On Blonde" to someone, that's it! I'll definitely do a refresher viewing with you! I must admit I don't remember loving it.....but the couple who showed me it loved it. PS: The poster for the movie (which is in your thumbnail) is based on the (American version ) of The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" album.

Man, I don't think of this movie as being that old, but so many elements are so dated - looking someone up in a phone book, putting quarters in a pay phone, making mix tapes... This movie was the first time I can remember seeing Jack Black. I thought he was amazing in the movie...and I had no idea he could sing so that last scene where he sings like Marvin Gaye was a SHOCKER! LOL. By the way, you identified Lisa Bonet (Denise on The Cosby Show and A Different World) as "Kravitz". I'm not sure if you meant because she was married to Lenny Kravitz (that was her first marriage. She later married Aqua Man) or if you might have confused her with her daughter, Zoe Kravitz? They do look quite similar, I think.
@thorguff2 жыл бұрын
That isn't what "dated" means. Just because a movie represents a certain time period when it was made, it doesn't make it "dated."

Glad I found your channel! You seem very thoughtful & insightful. This is one of my favorite romcoms - not really many out there written from the man's point of view. It's also funny as hell, IMO, especially if you are or know someone who is a bit of a music nerd like Rob, Barry and Dick. I respect your POV on the character's self-involvement and inability, at the outset, to understand the folly of his thinking about all those relationships up to & including Laura - I saw the glass half full, tho - he figures things out and becomes a better man pretty much on his own, even if it took him a while.

Elizabeth… You should really stop watching women on the internet calling men narcissists. Everyone demonstrates narcissistic characteristics to varying degrees. And WAY TOO MANY women, in their pathological effort to validate/justify their feelings, even if those feelings aren’t fair or rational, will twist their perception of reality, often being hypocritical in the process, to accuse men of all sorts of armchair psychiatric labels like “narcissist”. Labeling a man like that let’s you dismiss him without any consideration. You’re looking to call this character narcissistic like you need your next breath. That’s not a good look. Now Charlie… the ex-girlfriend… SHE is narcissistic. She doesn’t consider anyone else. And you gave her a pass without any criticism. And you implied that since you aren’t a man, you can’t know what would make him go out and sleep with that singer chick, like only men would do that? Rob has good and bad moments… and you seem to have a gynocentric view of relationships…. always validating the woman, looking to justify their actions and condemn his.
