The Big Sick is based on the real-life relationship between Kumail Nanjani, who plays himself in the film, and his future wife, Emily Gordon, played by Zoe Kazan. After the couple reluctantly fall in love, the success of their relationship becomes dire when Emily discovers that Kumail is hiding her from his family.
With the couple’s relationship seemingly at an end, Emily contracts an illness which forces doctors to put her into a medically induced coma. Kumail is inadvertently summoned to the hospital to be with Emily until her out-of-state parents, played by Holly Hunter and Ray Ramano, arrive.
Through the tragedy, Kumail realizes his love for Emily is more profound than he thought and then must decide whether to fulfill his family’s wishes or follow his heart.
Nanjiani and his wife wrote The Big Sick, and since the subject is about their first-hand experience, the film has a genuine stranger-than-fiction vibe, making it one of the best newer films I have seen in a while.
