In the 90’s I went it a local music store in Malmö, Sweden, to buy a Marshall. The shopkeeper insisted that I try a Laney before deciding for the Marshall. I thought it was not useful because I wanted a Marshall. But after a while a gave in a brought it into the small test room. 20 minutes I bought the Laney LC30. Laney is just so good.

I have a early VC30 with 2X10 and 2X10 extension cab. Replaced the stock HH speakers with some used celestion g10-20's back in the early 90s. That amp is a tone machine! Just crank the clean and let it eat. This is one I'll never sell.

I have a Laney 4x12 with hh speakers, it sounds great and I've never had any complaints but do you think it would be worth it to switch out for some greenbacks? Does the tone really change that much?

@@babydaddy8224 I noticed a massive difference. Now 10's and 12's are also a different situation. The three biggest things I noticed were tighter low end and a overall Slightly smoother highs and a overall reduction in volume. The HH invaders I had obviously had a higher sensitivity than the celestion. In my case this was a good thing. Can't say if it's the right move for you or not.

This is the proof that all cork sniffers thrashing the Seventy 80 speaker simply don't know how to dial it in and mike it! I have a Laney VC50 from 1999, with the optional 2x12 extension cab. It's switchable between (2) 6L6 or EL34. With the extension cab plugged in, it's running at 4 ohms and is insanely loud and punchy. It has two channels - one vintage sound and one with very heavy drive. It is still going strong after almost 25 years.

Great demo of a great amp Johan, thanks. I was fortunate enough to acquire the 1X12 model in pristine condition a couple of years ago. I’ve treasured it ever since. I live quite near to the Laney facility in Halesowen here in the UK. Decided to take it in for a service. They put a more modern power transformer in it as well as an anti-hum control in the back. Has made an already brilliant amplifier slightly more ‘modern’ without altering the sound. It’s the only valve amp which I own. And it’s the only one which I’m likely to need. Thanks again.

I bought a Laney AOL 50 watt head in a pawn shop for $200 back in 1999. But sold it around 2004 when I was playing keys instead of guitar. But in 2014 I bought a VC50 from a friend for $300 and a case of beer. Since then I traded some equipment for a dead GH50L that is my best amp after replacing the transformer. I also currently own a JCM 900 2500. I'm Just not playing out as much as I was now that I'm an old coot. But I got the tools and toys in case opportunity knocks. Got a VC30-212 into which I have put a pair of HiWatt speakers. Much better than the stock Seventy-80s. The built in reverb is not the greatest in the world but it does a job if you don't have a pedal for it. Other than that it's a nice little amp. Ferkin loud if you need it but good sweep on the volume pots so it a nice even transition from quiet to loud (Fender - are you paying attention?). For what you can pick one of these up for they are great value.

@@craigmadey1938 Thanks for the reply, I've wanted to change speaker for years, i have the Seventy 80 i think. I didn't know this was possible, so to be clear, does this move the the control section of the amp, or were you able to move just the valve section of the chassis? On another note, i was looking yesterday at Jensen Alnico P12Q with the square magnet, they have a large depth, but the circumference is smaller then the base of the speaker, at the right angle, this i thought might actually pass underneath the existing valve setup. I need to measure that but my amp is in storage at the moment. Just on the Tonex these days.

@@AaronOwenSmith As I think about it, it’s “all coming back” :-). There was a piece of trim along the back of the chassis - I removed that. I slid the whole chassis out far enough to there was no gap between the tone controls and the cabinet (yes, the whole assembly slid out - unless you get into some serious engineering, no way to move just the tubes). A speaker with an Alnico magnet could be a great option, too - I could be wrong, but they usually have covers on the magnet (which is generally smaller than ceramic magnets) and with this cover, I think there is a lot less “pull” that could affect the tubes. At one point I was thinking of trying my hand at cabinetry and building a whole new enclosure. This worked good enough…. As with gear, I moved on. Still with Laney, but I couldn’t pass up on the Supergroup LA Supermod…. With a master volume, I can keep the tinnitus at bay…

You seem to find something good in all the amps you play on here, but what is the worst amp you have ever played through?

Of course, the usual lame bluesy dad riffs. Nobody plays that anymore, it’s not 1975. Leads do not showcase an amp’s tone.
