That Miranda and Daniel don't get back together is actually thanks to Robin Williams and Sally Field, who had both been through divorces with children. They wanted the movie to end in a more realistic, grounded way, to show children that divorce really can be a good thing.

Glad they didn't make Stu the bad guy either. To be honest, the only "bad thing" he really did was call Daniel a loser. But in hindsight, this is probably because he probably heard it from Miranda. But all in all, he really didn't do anything to deserve almost getting killed.

And it's kind of a good thing too since both parents really don't mesh together in ways that are healthy. Miranda uses the court mandated 1 day of visitation to punish Daniel for his failings as a parent and a spouse, and Daniel goes to these extreme lengths just to see his kids and ensure he can, but it's unhanded and deceitful. If they had gotten together, with the story as it is, it would come off as undeserving. It's clear the parents love their kids, but the love they have for each other is not really there anymore. It's healthier for them both to admit it and make it about the love they both share for their chidren.

as a child of divorce, this movie will always hold a special place in my heart. that scene at the end when Mrs. Doubtfire is responding to Katie always makes me tear up. I love that the parents didn't get back together because that is so much more realistic and relatable for kids like me than the the typical Hollywood ending. thanks for the reaction Chris! ❤

I very much like that they don't make Pierce Brosnan's character a terrible person: of course the audience is primed and programmed to dislike him because of who he is opposite Daniel. But the script and Brosnan himself don't capitalize on that. If we saw the movie from Miranda's POV or Brosnan's, we would be on his side, though we might still have sympathy for Daniel.

Like my only issue with Miranda was bringing a new guy around so soon after the divorce (although I don’t know how long the divorce process was). But it didn’t seem to affect the kids since they liked him. I’m glad that they didn’t make him the bad guy and genuinely cares about being around for them
@Aeroldoth3

I feel for Brosnan. I think his character was just meant to be a 2 dimensional "opponent" for Williams, just someone to add tension to the story. Yet he really gets the short end of the stick. He's willing to be with a woman with "a lot of baggage", something most men will NOT do. He's not only nice to the kids, he actually likes them, and seems like he'd be a good fit as a parent. Yet he's repeatedly insulted and mistreated by Willliams, while doing nothing to him/her. He comes across a sa good guy with a good heart who's actually willing to be with a woman going through tough times, and all he gets for his compassion and kindness is kicked to the curb without so much as a how d'you do. I think men are already RARELY willing to have a relationship with a woman with kids and breakup issues, and this movie only seems to show that no man should.

I think it was the right move. As the director wanted to reassure to audience the Miranda and the kids will be fine and won't be taken advantage of. But also, when you consider that Daniel's the one that needs to change. If they made Stu the bad guy, leading to Miranda to decide to go back to Daniel, it kind of would downplay Daniel's own wrong actions, making it seem like he was fine the way he is.

They really fought for Miranda and Daniel to not get back together, the writers and producers wanted them to be back together but they wanted to write something real for kids who were going through this, and to drive the point across that you can't always reconcile a romantic relationship, but you can get along and still care for each other.

Loved this movie growing up and really hit close to home. I also loved the fact they didn't get back together because similar to my own parents they did bring out the worst in each other. And were better off being separate, despite this they had respect for each other and let us kids have a relationship with both parents. Always hated how often movies made one parent a bad person.

This movie always gets to me. My parents didn’t officially divorce, but they permanently separated. It was around the time I was about to start college and we were also moving out of the house I grew up in for 19 years. Even though they went their own ways when I was kind of an adult, I noticed the increased tension and decline of affection way before that time.

My parents separated when I was 6, divorced by the time I was 7. My parents decided that Joint Split Custody was the right idea at first...one week at one house, one week at the other, ad nauseum.... My sister and I were also separated during that timeframe, one kid with each parent... eventually the strain got to be too much and my mom took over custody of us both... I love the sentiment in the ending monologue, though I wish I had been able to experience parents that were happier apart... It's a good message.

Mom and grandma took me to see this as a little kid. That was a very memorable experience for me. Even though I was a kid, I understood the emotional impact and implications of this movie. No one, not a single soul in that theater, had a dry eye. We also all gave it a standing ovation. Keep in mind I wasn’t any if much older than the youngest girl, but I understood instinctively that I should stand and clap. This movie was pure magic and a beautiful example of the talents of a truly beautiful soul who deserved so much happiness in life. A beautiful piece of art that genuinely deserves the love it gets even thirty years later

My parents had divorced when I was a year and a half. All I knew was the fights; never saw them get along for longer than 30 minutes. A lot of times it felt like my dad was using me as a power piece for my mom (mom had custody, dad paid child support, which he often paid late). While this movie never helped me feel better about my own dad, it was wonderful to see a father that did anything to be with his kids, and the ending message has stuck with me forever. In fact, the movie actually helped me empathize with kids that had memories of their families, and got along fairly well with both parents. I always would recommend this movie, and tell people to pay attention to the message of the film.

I always loved this movie, they don't hark too much on anyone being bad or good, though in reality, it reeeally wasn't okay what Daniel did, it breaks the stereotypes we've come to expect. The new love interest is actually a nice guy, though still flawed, and they don't get back together but learn that they're better at living for themselves and their kids apart. It's helpful for children of divorce, and I'm sure for people to see it can work out. Through Daniel, we get to see him find out how it was for her, whereas before he saw her at the problem. We also learn that communication is very important.

I am team Sally on this. Gotta understand her position. She married an overgrown baby who couldn't keep a job, messed up the house, intervenes when she's disciplining the kids, etc. But she went too far by punishing Daniel with the visitation stuff. It is good that she finally realized this isn't about her and it is about the kids. Most moms out there don't get it and they use custody as a means to punish their ex-husband. This movie is great because it addresses a lot of the wrongs in society in my opinion.

I wish someone had said that to me when my parents got divorced when I was 4. It would have saved a whole lot of people, a whole lot of trouble. That's why I love this movie. It really does a great job at explaining divorce and how it doesn't change how their parents feel about them that kids can readily understand. Now, you must watch "Tootsie" w Dustin Hoffman. The real Mrs Doubtfire ran her shop (jewellery and old furs) in the New Town of Edinburgh for more than 50 years, she was quite a character. Author of the original Anne Fine lived just round the corner from Madame Doubtfire's shop in the mid Seventies. As a young mother she would push the buggy past Madame Doubtfire's jumbled up bric-a-brac shop. The shop was full of jewellery and old furs. So the character's name is real, but not her story.

I saw Mrs Doubtfire on tv, probably cut down a lot for commercials. But I remember it being very funny and sad; although I'm sure I missed most of the plot and jokes back then. Robin Williams was a once in a lifetime performer. One can pinpoint the parts he ad libbed, and they're the best ones. I live in the only country in the world, aside from the Vatican, without a divorce law. So if Daniel and Miranda were married here, there's no way they could remarry legally (too bad, Pierce Brosnan) and they have to come up with a child custody arrangement on their own. This meant that Miranda couldn't stop Daniel from visiting the kids everyday if he wanted to and we won't have a movie.

Chris! Just a suggestion for sometime in the future. There's a movie that always gets my heartstrings because it's about a father who tries to get closer to his son. It's a comedy and stars Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield's made several movies, none of which I care to see, because the underlying love isn't there as much as in this movie. Dangerfield plays a fish out of water, if only to be close to his son, so this movie is funny, but with an undercurrent of his love for his boy. The movie is called "Back to School." For your advisement, if you're amenable. :)

Robin Williams was amazing in this. Also the hours manipulation is very common in the divorces in my family.

I once gave a friend a box of 30+ Robin Williams VHSes and DVDs (she *really* digs Williams) as a birthday present. Recently her husband told me, "I hate you. I've had to watch Mrs Doubtfire 12 times since we got married." (I gave him a list of 10 obscure Williams movies to get for his beloved to slow the flood of Doubtfire.)

The studio originally wanted the movie to end with the parents getting back together again. both Robin Williams & Sally Field protested, stating that would give false hope to actual divorced kids/parents. They stuck to that & the movie is better for it.

One of the best films that Robin Williams has ever done! In retrospect the divorce was actually good for both Daniel and Miranda. Well Daniel needed to learn to be a more responsible parent, Miranda had to learn to be a more carefree and loving one. As it’s been stated that once in the end it’s more about how the kids are going to be dealing with the divorce, not the parents. If you aren’t aware there is a musical production of this film, and one of the songs is based on a deleted scene in which Lydia wonders why can’t her parents just pretend to be happily married because then they could be a family. Her father response is that we wouldn’t be happy, they wouldn’t be happy, it just be a pretend family. 👨‍👧‍👦👩‍👧👵🏻💖

Harvey Fierstein was Frank. He is a very successful and pioneering playwright, who helped, through his work, to humanize the concept of homosexuality in the 1980s; and also in his appearances as an actor in various sitcoms. He's notable for his wit and his distinctive hoarse voice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5ixoIudbdlgi68

Maybe an unpopular opinion: I LOVE THIS MOVIE! to be clear. But I enjoy TOOTSIE a bit more. I think it's just a bit more believable and a little funnier. THEY'RE BOTH CLASSICS, but I recommend TOOTSIE. Curious on what you'd think.

The original novel is much edgier and more cynical, with Miranda and Daniel literally wanting to kill each other the whole time (they're already divorced at the start, so the story doesn't go into what they were even doing married in the first place), and when the kids all quickly see through the disguise, Daniel gets them to clean the house by threatening to disappear from their lives for good. It was definitely for the best to ease that down.

I grew up watching this movie I’ve always loved Robin Williams I practically know the lines in this film. As a kid I always thought Miranda was too strict and mean but now as an adult I can understand why she divorced Daniel. He undermined her authority as a parent there was no cooperation with the decisions that they should have made together. Example: the birthday party he threw. Also unstable jobs, not really listening to Miranda whenever she wanted to have a serious conversation. It was like having grown child in the house and she felt alone. HOWEVER… I think she was in the wrong in taking the kids away from Daniel because he clearly loves them and she used them to get back at Daniel cuz she was angry at him.

Now u need to see Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie. It's similar to Mrs. Doubtfire and Robin asked Dustin for advice on how to dress like a woman for this role. Also, u should see Nine Months. That's another hilarious 90's movie.😂

I love the mental image of the movie's crew going through 50 years of pop music looking for anything that could sound like a double entendre about cross-dressing, resulting in Luck Be a Lady, Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Dude Looks Like a Lady, and Walk Like a Man.

My father was married twice before my mom and had 2 sons before me. As near as I can tell, he abandoned my 2 older brothers. I know he abandoned me. For myself, I had to fight hard to stay apart of my daughter's life until she grew up. Women bashing daddys is a real thing and so is treating daddys like second class people.
