This week we sat down with Adam Pearson, who grew up with a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis, which causes growth of tumours on nerve tissues on his face and upper body. Adam told us about his childhood and teenage years, how he learnt to cope with bullying and made a successful film and TV career.

@@Snk13_ty I've often asked: what happened to that lovely term? Our beloved "Captain Obvious" was used far more often in the past. And after KZbin became what it has (allowing us to clearly see how unfortunately/surprisingly mundane, uninventive, derivative, thoughtless, and simple the average knee-jerk commenter is), you'd think it would be the #1 reply for when dull people leave dull comments which are...well....dull and obvious. Painfully obvious. Brutally obvious. Bowel-shakingly obvious. But it isn't. I've not heard it used much at all. And for years. Until now! Captain Obvious must ride again! Proudly! Loudly! Obnoxiously! You are doing Gods work! Bless you lad. If there were social consequences for being dull and dreadfully uninventive in every possible way, guess what? People would step up their game! It's inevitable. History shows this quite clearly. In a sense, you are inadvertently promoting positive change. Isn't that just ducky? Oscar Wilde (degenerate batty-boy or not), would be disgusted by the state of current affairs and the putrid homogenization of wit, character, and the low-rent arse-gravy which passes for "comments" nowadays, especially/ironically when it's from those who pay far higher rent than their comments would imply. wtf is that rubbish? Revolting! Spread the word. Captain Obvious must make a comeback. And for your fine work you are invited to our bi-yearly gathering of the C.O.C.K (Captain Obvious Collective Knights) at the Beefeater in Luton, where there is always quince marmalade, stinking bishop cheese, and lashings of jellied eels. In the past, back when charter member Fanny McDonough-Finkelstein was active (before her unfortunate shaving accident), there was also an intimate yearly fish and goose soiree. Good times, those. Keep up the good work. And God bless you all, each and every one. (except those wretched dull people, of course)

I saw this man’s disability for a few seconds and then I just saw a man who was getting on with life and trying to do it best the best he could. He’s so interesting and intelligent that I found myself just focusing on what he was saying instead of his appearance. It would be a honour to work beside him or have this man as a good friend. He has a lot of perspective to offer and we could all learn from that.

One good cry or one good moan and then you've got to put it in its place. Great line and one I'll keep in mind when talking about resilience with some of the teenagers I teach. Life can be so rough but at some point you have to deal with what's been dealt and either stop the issues that you can, or, move on and enjoy the other aspects in life.

I too have NF1. When I was four, I was in daycare around age 3, I went on a slide and slid down the slide hard and hurt my back. I was in a lot of pain so the staff had to contact my mom to informed them of what happened. I was given ice while waiting for my mom picked me up to go see my PCP. At the time, there was no bump on my back but my mom being a LVN at the time, just wanted to make sure I was okay internally. Later on during the months, a bump started to grow on my lower back which started to cause a lot of problems with me being able to stand up straight whenever I woke up in the morning. From then on, my hospital journeys began because my mom was so determined to find out what the bump was. No doctors could figure out what the bump was (Mind you, this was the early 90s so NF was not really known at the time.) until I was referred to my current hospital, MD Anderson. I was seen by a brain and spine specialist and he ran many tests to figure out what the bump was on my lower back. By this time I had already turned 4 and the bump got a little bigger. After many tests and my doctor (who’s still my current doctor) who did so many researched, was finally able to diagnosed me with Neurofibromatosis 1 or NF1 for short. There was this man back in the 1800s who was known as “The Elephant Man.” He had many tumors which caused a lot of deformities in his body due to how the tumors grow which eventually lead to his death. In the early 1900s, a doctor reassured his body, I believe “The Elephant Man,” or real name Joseph Merrick donated his body to science. The doctor was determined to eventually diagnosed Joseph with NF. So my doctor was also able to diagnosed me with NF because of other signs and symptoms I experienced. From then on, I had to have surgeries to remove many tumors. More and more tumors began to from which I couldn’t have surgery because of the tumors were wrapped around many nerves. Having surgery to remove some of the hard to reach tumors would have either leave me paralyzed or severely bleed out quickly and dying on the table. Fast forward today, I have hundreds of tumors including the first one I had when I slid the slide hard. NF still affects my everyday life. I live in constant pain due to how the tumors are wrapped around many of my nerves. It’s a hard life, but in a weird way, I’m glad it happened to me and none of my brothers and my mom. I truly wouldn’t wish this hell on my worst enemy.
