I picked my son up once when he was 3 and lost my balance a little.. it really was no big deal and I wasn't close to falling over but didn't matter. From that point on my little boy was terrified of anyone picking him up. Not being able to pick him up and hold him was horrible but I can't imagine him not wanting to look at me.

Stories like this really make you think about how our individual lives will develop. I'm 23 years old, and to think, like, this guy when he was 23 never in a million years thought that by his current age, he'd have lost all his limbs and have his life altered in such a way. Where will we all be in 10 years? Where will we all be TOMORROW? I could climb an extension ladder tomorrow, as I have every day for the passed decade, and this time slip and fall to my death. Maybe become paralyzed for the rest of my life or something life altering like that. It's a crazy life we live. Makes you thankful for every day you can still take a breath, or step out of bed in the morning. Bless this man and all he's done in spite of his condition. Amazing story.

'Where will we all be tomorrow?'- are you aware (i think you are from the rest of your post) of how profound that seemingly simple question is? The future is a foreign country, and none of us know the terrain or the language. Without a belief in God, which many of us do not have, all we have is hope that tomorrow contrives to keep safe. I morbidly thought of serial killers the other day after watching Dahmer. Can you imagine ending up helpless in the lair of a serial killer who is about to torture you to death? That's a fate noone expects to happen to them too, and is probably the single worst fate that can befall anyone. Or imagine merely being hit by a car or a bus a common occurence which could kill or maim you for life. In fact there are an infinite number of ways to die or be injured, and it is a bloody surprise that we often reach our eighties. Growing old is a precious gift afforded to only the lucky, which is why it's so weird that people disparage and fight against it so often. There is nothing more powerful or beautiful than a contented elderly person. They've survived everything. We should all respect the old far more than we do.

Fellow alcoholic: it's not seriously within the scope of discussion here but it's interesting how briefly he touched on his alcohol use before the amputation. He seems to begrudgingly admit it but that's most likely why the illness almost killed him. It lowers your body's immune response and makes you not care for yourself. Another risk of heavy drinking nobody really talks about...

Thank you. The only child of a lifelong alcoholic here, he refused to admit it his entire life. Even when I ran away at 16 because of his drinking, but I returned two years later. The stress of my leaving brought his M.S. out of remission, and I had to go back and care for him. He was never abusive. He drank away his trauma. He still never talked about it when he was dying of cancer at 52 years old when I was 26. One nurse in the oncology suite said, "Wow-those M.S. drugs did a number on your dad's brain all these years. His scan just now was worse than swiss cheese." For the first time in my life, I broke OUR invisible Father/daughter's secret of shame and replied, "No, he never took M.S. meds. He's just a drunk. And gin, if you have it." I see it like yesterday, every second, and I am almost his age then.

I felt that too. Hot and cold sweats are the worst. Calling dial bottle for medicinal mickies, having to take baby aspirin to slow my heart and stop seizures. Drinking cases of water in a day. I was in my early twenties lol. To think this could have happened to me is insane. Glad I quit

@@OfficialMyxomatosis Oh my God. That must've been horrible. My grandpa was a drunk, but be admitted himself to the clinic saying he has a problem, and quit it... I'm currently 26 and I use every opportunity to get drunk and consume weed, also to escape from trauma. Also a heavy smoker. I used to take antidepresants and whatnot, been to multiple therapists and psychiatrists, and none of the meds or therapies ever helped. It makes me want to quit, honestly, thinking about my future children, which I'll probably never have, because I'm an asshole of a person whom nobody cares about and there's not a woman out there that would bear me children... at least, not a woman that I would want. Then again, I have nothing going on for me, nothing to show for, nothing worthwhile. I'll probably die alone, and the sooner it happens the better for everyone, even my non-yet-existent children.

Powerful story about a tragic disease, Alex is lucky to be alive. He actually survived 2 diseases that could have killed him; Toxic Shock and Alcoholism. I saw another story on line yesterday about a student who ate some left over food and got a rare form of Meningitis and Strep A also. It turned his blood into poison, he too lost all of his limbs. We don't want to be alarmist and rush to ER every time we are sick, but it could save your life.

Ahh this has got me a little worried now.. I cut my finger open on a can of bean dip pretty deep the other day.. probably got the dip in the wound. I washed it really well and put triple antibiotic cream on it though. Crazy how a tiny little wound can literally kill you

@@derpnerpwerp we think she must have touched a handrail with bacteria on it which infected the wound before it healed. So if you clean cuts properly you're probably fine as long as you're careful to protect it whilst it heals. Sorry to be scary - but better to know and stay safe!

Gives me chills hearing this, I had meningitis and sepsis when I was 21. Initially my family had been told I was going to die that night, then both my legs would be amputated…. I ended up just losing a few toes. I’m one of the lucky ones ❤️

I have no children I’ve had a good life so whatever I have left is what it is! Just goes to show how fragile life is!

@@tomymelon6293 I woke up one morning and might right arm couldn't move at all and I couldn't get off my couch. So my mother came to take my kids to school and made me go. Took 5 days before they figured out what was wrong and I got out of quarantine and they did surgery on my right side. Took about 50 lbs of flesh out of me from my chest and under my arm and down my side. It had started migrating across my chest that morning and I couldn't breathe which is why they decided on surgery. I didn't lose any limbs and only had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital thankfully. I haven't been the same mentally since as every time I get the slightest cold I'm scared as hell. Single dad and was damn scared I'd be leaving my kids all alone.

I recently spilled a great deal of smoking hot oil on myself. Started a house fire in the process. Third degree, "full thickness" burns. Back of my right hand and around my wrist, left fingers, down my belly, my left shin, the tops of both feet, and the underside of my right foot. Melted the clothing right off me. I haven't really felt sorry for myself, per se, I attacked my physical therapy with persistence and vigor, and I'm getting better, despite my seemingly inevitable scars. However, I've had a severe case of "FML" for months now. I am certainly not becoming any happier by watching this, but it does put things in perspective. It shows me that while a lot is upsetting me about life right now, I still have cause to be thankful. I truly hate the "it could be worse!" argument, but it's infallible.

It does help and it's worth digging into. Ultimately, only you can look after your mind, and whether you find peace and live a happy life, or exist in turmoil, will come down to what you choose to do with your mind and how much effort you put in. There's a great book called The Art of Happiness written by the Dalai Lama that is full of methods on how to think in order to reduce suffering and increase happiness. Very simple and accessible, but very profound in its benefits. You have the power in your mind to gain so much benefit from this situation that one day you are glad it happened. That's quite a statement, aye? But that's my challenge to you. You can do it.

My mum had strep necrotising fasciitis (can't remember which sub type) and died in a matter of hours, before she could even get to hospital and have surgery to amputate. It was extremely traumatic for those of us around her, so I can only imagine how difficult it was for those around Alex, who I would imagine fet very helpless. I'm also a patient at Salisbury (Odstock) hospital. The staff in the Burns Unit / Plastic Surgery Unit are beyond excellent. I have nothing but the up most respect for every single one of them. Long live the NHS, we are so, so lucky to have it.

Good on you for taking a tragedy and turning it around into such a positive thing. You're not just helping with these tangible projects giving people prosthetics, and wheelchairs and all of the other great work you do. You're helping people just by showing what a positive thing something like this can be. And if you can turn something THAT difficult and potentially tragic and turn it into the positivity you have. It just shows everyone that they can do the same thing with their situation. My difficulties don't even compare to what you must have been through, but you've definitely inspired me in that sense. I remember watching the documentary of him in hospital and how hard it was for him to keep positive and I’m so happy to see this so many years later and that he’s pulled through! His best friend is amazing for helping him get through it

Thank you for sharing your story. I was stabbed in the neck and had the bottom half of my chin almost completely cut off by my ex-husband. I went through a few reconstructive surgeries to make my chin look normal and decrease the size of the scar that runs from the right side of my neck to the middle of my chest. It hurts to be looked at as different and to feel people staring at you. I wish you well on your continued journey to healing.

I’m a 51 year young man, who balled his eyes out, when he told the story of his dog coming into the room. Then, if that wasn’t enough the story of how much of a true Guardian Angel his friend who gave up his own life,(in essence) to take care of him-Wow, Anyway, it turned out to be soo positive, what an absolute bad ass!!!

We value this life so much, but this life becomes a distraction from God, and so we do not make preparations for eternity and do not call on Jesus Christ. Worst part of his sickness was not losing his limbs but the fact that his kids didn't want to kiss him goodbye anymore. That thought breaks my heart every time, but I hope his kids are fine with this now and learned to live with it

It would have been nice to hear more about his relationship with Lucy. In the documentary years ago Lucy had been quite honest and said he originally had no real interest in getting married, even though she kept asking him. In this video he puts his success and survival down to his son, his best friend and his dog, but no real recognition towards the missus. I didn't feel him radiate a great deal of warmth towards her in the conversation. He doesn't discuss the hardship of not being able to properly touch or hug her. I wonder if they have split up. I thought they had eventually gotten married but I'm not sure. It was interesting to hear him discuss his previous issues with alcohol. I don't think that was mentioned in the longer documentary. But he seems to be in a better place and his face has healed considerably well considering all the surgeries.

agreed. he never talks of her much. in later videos/articles she is referred to as his wife, and also partner, but i'm not convinced that they ever actually married. i've never heard him say it. they are still together though, and joke about it. who knows, maybe its their thing, something personal to them that they don't want the public to know.

How many times have I heard stories about people who have come through extreme adversity and said it was the best thing that has happened to them as a person to grow!
