My heart goes out to you, buddy. The words coming out of your mouth are virtually identical to everything I experienced in my own life. I did some form of martial arts from the age of 15 on(I am now 57). I also did bodybuilding to bulk up as I was 6'1" & only 135 lbs upon high school graduation & immediately went into the Air Force. Fast forward to my mid-30s & I am working in healthcare with both geriatric & developmentally disabled adults... my back pain finally got to the point that I was unable to work anymore. I had completely ruptured my L4, L5 & S1 discs. The doctor said "imagine the shock-absorbing discs between your vertebrae are jelly donuts - now stomp on em. That's you." Basically, have the fusion surgery or live in a wheelchair in the near future. I hoped against all hope that I'd have the procedure - actually 2 surgeries 3 days apart - and be back to work in a year. That never happened. I became permanently disabled at age 38. I still walk with a cane today. I had the whole sweat thru the sheets pain, sitting in a kitchen chair IN the shower, using a walker w/my wife(who was also in healthcare) holding a gaitbelt around my torso to support me in case I fell. AND, I became addicted to the morphine pills. But wait, there's more! 😮 I had my surgeries end of Jan/beginning of Feb, and in May my wife slipped on a wet floor at work & completely blew out her left knee, requiring surgery. Now we BOTH were down & out. What most people don't realize, when you're out on Workers Comp, not only do now only make 60% of your regular pay, YOU are now responsible for ALL of the medical insurance premium, part of which is normally paid by your employer, part by you. NOW, you have to pay ALL of it. Needless to say, we ended up losing the medical coverage that took care of ME, but luckily her medical was still covered as it was an on-the-job injury. Remember those morphine pills I ingested several times a day for 3 months straight? COLD TURKEY gone. No more. Zero. OMG I remember laying in bed, sweating, with my hands reaching up toward the ceiling & just {{{shaking}}}. It was horrific. No wonder people who get legit hurt get hooked on street drugs after actual medical coverage runs out... I am better now. I still deal with back pain everyday, but I have learned how to move, what NOT to do, etc., although I still end up being stubborn & doing things I'm not supposed to be doing & end up in bed for 3 days. But instead of "fighting the wind", I have accepted that my back is not a problem to be solved, but a condition to be accepted. The male 'bread winner' ego has a very hard time accepting this - to me, it was like admitting "defeat". As a lifelong martial artist, working thru pain was ingrained in me. This was simply NOT possible anymore. And that's okay. "It is what it is" is a very freeing mindset. I stopped fighting the wind. I am pulling for you. Be gentle with yourself. You deserve it.

I had a lower disc pushing on a nerve years ago. I was about 30 years old, and there was times that it was so unbearable I was brought to tears. When you can't get any comfort, sitting , laying, standing- you feel helpless. I ended up having to have surgery and thank God I've been ok- I'm 51 now. Your situation is way worse though- praying for healing brother!

I’m saying some prayers for you. I have a collapsed disc between my L5 and S1. My entire summer was ruined and I couldn’t even walk down the block without extreme pain. I work remote so that wasn’t an issue but for four months I didn’t really go anywhere, I became quite reclusive. The nerve pain medicine helped as well as other therapies but it’s not out of my mind. I know the pain you’re in. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. You’re a good person and don’t deserve this. I was diagnosed with the same spinal issue.

Prayers for you, Stevie… You seem like SUCH a kind, and overall great dude. Please, please better. As someone that has 5 broken vertebrae that did not re-fuse correctly, 2 herniated discs, and bulges throughout…add to that occipital neuralgia due to the nerve impingement in my neck, and spinal +85% stenosis in my neck…and most recently a tumour on my brain stem. I KNOW how shite back pain, and spasms are… BUT…if ANY of that got infected??? I cannot fathom that…PLEASE be safe…PLEASE take a rest. I still TRY to train…and it’s beyond aggravating to have to take days and/or weeks off because of the spasms…but YOU ARE ALREADY THE MAN for going this far…rest and heal as best you can!! Sending prayers, and every best wish I can!!

Prayers for you, Stevie. I'm still recovering from my fourth spinal surgery. And my second fusion in one year. I'm currently fused from T4-S1, 4 rods, 28 screws. And it took 122 Staples to close the incision. Your recount of trying to put your shoes on and socks on and in terrific pain I remember all too well. I hope you can avoid fusion surgery and can just have a diskectomy to cut away what's pressing on the nerve.

Stevie, Mate! I'm so sorry you're going through this shit! Hoping you have a good permanent solution asap. If you're lucky enough to go through life without back pain. Especially nerve damage, consider yourself very lucky! It's not just the pain. It is completely debilitating! You have to rely on loved ones to help you through. You struggle, and by struggle, I mean moving an inch at a time to avoid a lightning bolt shooting up and down your back, just to get off the damn toilet! Getting out of bed in the morning is a fuckin nightmare because your body has cooled down and you have to roll out of bed inch by inch. It's fucked! Absolutely fucked. And then you have to deal with work. Calling every morning to tell them you won't be in for the 15th day in a row. It's embarrassing as hell. You can hear the frustration in their voice when they say "again?" or "still?". Then after the MRIs and CTs they tell you you're basically fucked because your work envolves lifting heavy boxes and if you continue, this will keep happening. And you can forget working out. Can't do that anymore. My point, guys! Look after your back. Especially in the gym. I don't wish this shit on anyone! Sorry for the rant guys, I got triggered I guess. Wishing you all the best Stevie.

Hope things get better man. I had surgery on a really bad herniated disc in my lower back a few years ago, the pain was unbearable. I also had tingling through my legs and my feet would go numb after sitting for more than 5 minutes. No pain now other than soreness in the surrounding areas, but I still get the numbness and tingling. The nerve was too compressed. I had this done at 30 years old. You do not want lower back issues

Stevie, you need to take it easy. I understand you wanting to work out and stay in shape… But, your health is priority number one. I’m there with you as far as back and neck pain. I go through everything you do. It’s not fun. The lock ups and the spasms are the worst pain that anybody can go through. So please take it easy and relax at least for a few days to a week. Maybe more. Just let your body heal. So you don’t have to go through all of this again. Or at least not as bad. As somebody who has narrowing and moderate to severe arthritis, along with some disc issues from C1 to C7 and T1 down… I also refuse to go under the knife. Look at Hogan, he’s a perfect example that no matter how much digging and supposed fixing they do… very little is going to make a difference and in many cases of even people I know… It’s made them worse. So you just have to take your bumps as you get them and work around them to the best of your ability. Only use surgery as a worst case scenario. I would be interested to know if you have looked into our thought of the stem cell replacement? And if you know anybody that has and it has successfully worked? Because, they are now doing it in the United States. I don’t know if insurance is covering it yet or not. But at least it’s got its roots here and maybe it’s a viable alternative. Listen to the first interview Joe Rogan did with Mel Gibson, where he talks about his father and stem cell therapy and how much it helped him. Where he didn’t even want to move from his chair or bed and had pretty much given up on life and after stem cell therapy, he was like a kid again. I know I’ve asked my doctor about it and I don’t think he trusts anything outside of what they can do. Which, why would you want to send business somewhere else or get rid of it all together?
