About to retire from a woodworking career and a couple of tips: Lower your jointer (the entire machine) and get better view/ control of the work and use push pads!- not just your hands! Also get yourself some dowel buttons. They are really cheap so buy a couple of sets. Nice build- I like to sit and watch others play in their shops since I recently found KZbin (I was busy). Since you like math and prefer not to make plans- buy yourself a Centering Ruler and most importantly- a PHI ruler that lets you get the Golden Ratio without a lot of hassle. The only place I have found them is Lee Valley Tools. Learning to use 1:1.618 in all your work will change a lot.

I agree, the planner is too high, but I only have 2 work benches of similar height to use it on. I don't have any spare room to build anything dedicated to sit it on either, so I have to get by as I do.

I came across your channel either by accident or the algorithm. Glad I did pal. The box build was very good (would have liked to see how you made the handles) You showed a lot of patience and care with this build, so much so, the the hard work you put in made the mistakes none existent. Very impressed so far, this is the only vid of your channel I have seen and am very keen to get to the rest. I am going on holiday later this week so will save them till I'm round the pool.

That is one fine coin cabinet. Nothing like a fine piece of ash. Speaking of, I haven't had a nice piece of ash in quite a while (wink, wink). Nice job! Kudos! AAA+++ I also like to build boxes and don't measure all that much. I just reference off my other pieces. It gets very tiresome trying to measure a 32nd or 64th. I've got all kinds of measuring devices like Incra rulers, calipers, etc. and they're just lying around collecting dust. The 1:1.618 ratio as mentioned below does give your boxes the right eye appeal. I've built pencil and watch boxes that don't use this ratio but on most of my keepsake/gift boxes it comes into play.

Nice project! Mind the jointer deck, maybe it was the camera angle but it looked like your hand and sleeve were close to the blade. It’s really good to see someone making a project that is high quality and not needing the use of the Festool Domino. It’s perfectly fine to use dowels.

Mahogany is the best wood for coin cabinets and trays. It contains the least oils etc that might leak out and damage the coins.
@JamesManCave4 ай бұрын
Yes I had read that before, but as I said, the mahogany/walnut ones I've seen before just look a bit old fashioned and out dated
@Kevin_Beach4 ай бұрын
@@JamesManCave. Did you research the coin-protecting qualities of the woods you actually used? There’s no point in having a fancy modern-looking cabinet if the wood’s excretions destroy the value of your coins.
@JamesManCave4 ай бұрын
@@Kevin_Beach well the coin cabinets you are talking of, often have the coins placed in the trays, if you look at mine the coins a protected in capsules. Would be hard for any oils from the wood to get to the coin

How do you feel about that Ferrex Jointer/Planer combo and can you provide a link to it? I'm not having any luck finding it. I've got myself a Dewalt planer and a router sled instead of a jointer because I don't have space for a jointer but if I could combine them into a something just barely bigger than the planer, that would be ideal and save me a ton of time. EDIT: I just found a version by Jet that's reasonably priced (JPJ10) but it made me realize that I'm not sure I want to sacrifice the extra 3 inches I get with my Dewalt planer.
@JamesManCave4 ай бұрын
The ferrex is basically a scheppach one, it's made by scheppach, but with a few slight differences, and I'm sure they do a 12" version. It's good for what it does, it's not amazing in any department, but for the price it does exactly what I want it to do.
