What I personally appreciate in this video is you explaining not only about what works but also what doesn't work in compositions and showing that in actual pics. I find it equally important. To be fair, in my SD cards there are many more photos which don't work than those that do (and I believe in many SD cards is the same :) For me photography is too complex to fit into a few rules, and usually, you get working and not working elements in the same frame, so understanding and recognizing them is very important. Btw, I find summer beautiful for shooting - you have sunsets, seasides, fields and subjects, bw and long exposures, and even mornings are glorious, despite insanely early :) Thank's for a great video.

When Nigel's "not great" shot is better than anything you've taken in recent memory. ;-) Thank you for talking about improving shots over time and keeping that in mind, as well as practicing things when they "don't matter." That's stuff that somehow as a beginner, we assume that so much of what we see from the pros is gold all the time. Great video as always!

Really liked this video. I am really becoming aware of what did not work in my images ie: not enough negative space, poor exposure, & just not thinking throughout the process. I just returned from Iceland, and did more ‘drive by shooting’ instead of slowing down, using a tripod, and thinking through the process. My winners, or so I thought, have flaws that I really could have avoided had I been thinking properly. Definitely learned a lot from this!

Another extremely good video. I strongly agree with you on learning from one's mistakes: it's the way we grow. The 19th century novelist Samuel Butler said one should look at one's pictures like an enemy: not looking for ways to self congratulate, but rather for the things that aren't all they should be, because that is the only way to learn and so - we hope - improve. Showing that in your videos is really helpful and inspiring. Most pictures I take don't quite succeed, and some aren't even close. The ones that succeed grow out of the ones that fail.

All you lucky people in climates where you can right-off lush and green because you have lovely autumn colours and snowy winter scenes to look forward to! I live in Queensland, Australia, and everything looks much the same all year ‘round. My main reason for not going out in summer is it’s usually 32C+ and 90%+ humidity throughout the day...not a lot of fun. Mind you, I’m not envious of the fact you still have to wear more clothes in the middle of summer than I currently do in winter! 😄

I found this video extremely useful. I sometimes go out with a purpose but more often than not I just go out and shoot whatever I come across. Sometimes I'm happy with my photography, sometimes not so much. But I've never thought to examine the photos for what I could do differently to make them work the next time. At least not to this degree. Thank you.

Photography in the heat and humidity can be a challenge. On YT there is video of a NatGeo photographer on assignment in the Amazon, not the online kind. He and his assistants were overwhelmed by the heat, humidity, flying insects, rain, leeches, you name it. They used film cameras so changing film in the rain can be cause for alarm. They were never dry due to perspiration or rain. They had to prepare weeks in advance. At the end of the assignment one needed medical treatment for some kind of fungus on his feet. The photos he took were amazing.

The fact is we ALL take 'bad' shots on a shoot. It's just experimentation. Does this work, does that. What's the best angles, focal lengths, different times of light. I always say when I go out shooting all I want is ONE image that I'm happy with. I could take 10, 20, 30, 40 shots. As long as I get ONE out of god knows how many attempts then I'm more than happy :)

I salute you, Nigel, I normally can't motivate myself to pick up any of my cameras during Summer.. too hot, too buggy, too green... and green is one of my least favorite colors. But I might try... B&W, could be the answer.. or track the weather and chase some atmosphere and light. Cheers M8.

Nigel, thanks again for some great tips. On the composition with the millstones, two things came to mind. First, could you have backed up with a telephoto lens and compressed the distance to the background trees? Also, I think a closeup of the millstones would make a great B&W composition. Cheers from Oklahoma. ;-)

There can be a guilty feeling not liking pleasant weather but if you’re used to taking your camera out most times then over bright sky with no clouds is a disappointing sight. Emile, an old film "rule of thumb"...1 of 36 was good. Of course, all those light calculations done in the camera today were done in the head or on paper then, even with the light meter in the camera. Quick tip on bracketing... get the proper reading using a grey card then take one exposure; start under exposed 1stop; adjust your camera (aperture and/or shutter speed) in 1/4, 1/3 or 1/2 stop increments until you are 1 stop over exposed. You can do this with ISO but the calculations get tricky. Most digital cameras can be set-up to do this automatically. Your increment stop may change depending on morning, full daylight or sunset. Try it at all times of the day to see which your camera does best with the light situation. It takes time and practice but the effort is well worth it!

Thank you for this video! I just realized that this this weekend! Thank you for showing that not every time you go out you will get the pictures you wanted. I am so glad I found your channel and the message I get form your videos to me is photography has a couple Important variables, knowing your camera’s strengths and weakness and learn how to make it preform at its peak, finding what’s best for you and also to research your places you want to photograph, and scouting and repetition. Along with your own creativity, also not every picture was just caught on a chance of sure luck but rather a well prepared photographer. Although you if one continuously does something we all get lucky some time. Thanks for the videos! I am a just starting and these help especially getting discouraged at times. It's nothing that makes or ruins a photo - it's just about the fact that at their widest aperture most lenses are sharper in the center than at the image edges. By taking images at different apertures you can determine the setting for the most even sharpness across the whole image. Hope that makes it more clear.

Excellent advice, Nigel. Both the image critique and the preparatory work (camera settings, testing lenses, focusing, etc.) I wonder - do you also create a shot list based on the locations you plan to see? Obviously, you walk around and try to visualize compositions, but if you haven't been to a location before, after the Google Earth searches, do you then write down the specific locations to visit to try to get specific photos, or keep it a bit looser?

The best way to do this is to use the GPS function on your camera if it has it. It will tag every image with the GPS coordinates of each image you capture. If you don't have a camera with this function then the second best way would be to use the keyword tags in Lightroom to put location info in so you can reference it later when you need it.

A note on trees (from a botanist): Oak, Elm and to a certain extent Ash & Beech.... those with very distinct rings.... fantastic in the spring because they are late to emerge, so the spring flowers (bluebell, wood anemone, etc)are fabulous beneath the bright diaphanous green light; in the autumn the brown leaves take a while to fall off - most light reflects off them so are great from above, especially if wet. Maple, Sycamore, and trees with feint rings (diffuse porous) emerge rapidly in the spring, but in the autumn they get caught out by the frost & have transparent reds earlier than many others. White wood trees such as birch and rowan are often pioneers and can be found on their own in open spaces so can have interest all year. Requires a photographer of your calibre to translate that into a strategy, I just get it wrong every time!

Hi can you explain rings. Are these on the trunk to age a tree.
@pgcknaphill1892
@pgcknaphill1892 5 жыл бұрын
@@emilemontiere6128 Every year the tree grows new plumbing. In the ringed trees it seals off last year's ring and starts a new one, in the diffuse trees it re-uses some of the older rings and adds a new small ring to the outside. Trees with distinct rings are able to live to a ripe old age

I'm not a fan of summer, either: harsh light and clear blue skies are awful for landscape photography and here in Northern England the sunrises and sunsets are almost out of reach (today's: 04:48 and 21:43). More personally, I'm most comfortable below 15°C !

Great and super helpful Video, as always Nigel. I'll restrict my response to just one comment, though I could say loads, and it's this: from an occasional amateur, who'd love more time to shoot, do not feel bad about not showing any great shots. I doubt I only speak for myself when I say, "it is so helpful and encouraging to see people like you, who do this for a living, showing that you don't always come away with a collection of super shots and that 'you' and we can learn so much from an average day in the field." Please continue to just be you and your usual helpful self. Andrew

Regarding your tree and fern photo, I have to strongly disagree. Composition for me has always been the first and most important consideration when taking a photo. I am oftentimes able to see what is not obvious to most others, when photographing as well as otherwise, also I can see suggestion and allegory in what my eyes feed me and I make interconnections to what I have already experienced. In this photo of yours I can see “natural bonsai art”, also natural symmetry - not “mathematical”, that is absolute symmetry, but certainly “perceived” symmetry, in the branches. Also, it is as if two different trees have come close to each other, to form an image that suggests intimacy, maybe as a case “Of such inconsequential beginnings dynasties are begun”, to borrow from Stephen King’s “’salem’s Lot”. Kindly, have a look at the photo @ www.clickasnap.com/i/jv2wf8eijch8niyt *and its description,* to see what I mean. [The only “colour” I can see in that photo is at these abominable chromatic aberrations around the edges of the highlights!] To my eyes, this tree and fern photo is an impressive and appealing photo, and “colour”, to me, would be a distraction. I also always look for the unexpected, the unusual, the “element of surprise”, what I did not see when I took the photo, but my camera duly recorded! For example, I have never seen another photo of the Acropolis of Athens with a seagull in the frame, such as the one @ www.clickasnap.com/i/7cqghlacixqy5dvy - although quality- and composition-wise that photo is less than ideal [so to speak!], I consider myself extremely lucky to have taken this shot, plus the seagull chose the right timing *and heading!* All being said, I am not a photographer, by any stretch of imagination - I just like photography, I also value it highly as an excellent means of documentation!
