At the end of the day they will sell the first ones that trickle in slowly, but still to me I have no idea why the industry does this with release dates with no products on hand to buy when they aim these at consumers for massive price points

IMHO they shouldn’t announce a release until the product is in stock at the warehouse and available to dealers. If they want to announce a pre-order thru dealers ahead of release, with the customer’s only expectation being first in line at the time of release, that might be a better way to go. Someone is far more likely to speak and feel positively about something when they feel ahead of the game rather than left waiting in limbo. *edit for clarity

@hippiebits2071 totally agree. Making this announcement now just means that by the time we actually see these bikes they're last year's news. Someone shows up to a race or ride and we're all like "oh you got that bike they brought out back in 2024?"

You do realize this is an incredibly low volume bike, right? Like, they have to recoup years of R&D labor by well-paid engineers, tons of prototypes, expensive tooling that will likely only be used a few hundred times. Of course there has to be a $10k markup. This is how businesses work.

@cup_and_cone
@cup_and_cone Ай бұрын
I would say the main issue is so many of these bike companies are struggling to stay afloat that they simply lack the liquidity to go ahead and order product, then warehouse it before launch, ready to ship to dealers. Most brands probably need the pre-orders to use that money to pay suppliers and stay above water. I doubt many Western brands can easily order $30 million in product on credit anymore, given how many still have large sums of debt.

So true. Having worked for a dealer that sold all the big brands it’s so frustrating, and brand managers say “we are trying to create hype and exclusivity around the product” the industry needs to realise we aren’t selling supercars, these aren’t investments or things for social media clout. With a bike like the Colnago, it would be acceptable to wait till mid march if it meant that you would get a truly customized bar stem where you gave your fit information and they made handlebars for you that put the shifters at your exact position while preserving the slammed stem look, and it would have your ideal bar width/bar flare/having a short or long drop extension. This should be normalized for all high end bikes and it's shameful that the metrics of customization in the industry is so limited.

I now when I purchased a C60 Colnago it was a 6 week wait for the frame only and then I had to spec out saddle, groupset, handlebars, wheels etc etc. I think it’s even worse now as all the additional spec-outs all have their own time-line deliveries. Nothing has been right since before Covid. Stock-lines are just hit and miss. Having a good bike shop that understands the client and is able to guide in the process is critical. At the end of the day you rely on them for getting a bike optimised to perform at its best. If you know you’ll get that result at the end of the wait, it makes it more bearable

Delivery date was moved out at least three times. Fortunately LBS never asked for a deposit. Almost a year and half later I called Trek directly to inquire about the bike and they said we're not making that color any more ??? I call my LBS to ask and they said yes. we just got that info. as well. To their credit they said you've waited long enough and we can get you the SLR ( the next level of carbon ) and get you a Project One and give you a discount and we can have it here in a week and a half. Needless to say they treated me very well but wasn't too pleased with Trek.

It's not just cycling, that's how premium luxury items work-custom bike, luxury home, supercar, Hermés handbag, etc. Heck, I've been waiting for the VW id.Buzz to show up in the US for over 5 years and it was presented long ago, and available in Europe already. If you want the latest, the finest, the luxury, the custom, you have to be willing to wait. Otherwise, get something that is a production item. I bought a custom steel Speedvagen, dropped a lot of money into it, waited about 4 months, but it's the nicest riding bike I own, and a one of a kind bike. I bought the Bianchi Oltre XR4 when it first came out. I had to wait a few months but again, it was one of my favorite bikes. There are plenty of bikes out there but the luxury ones will require a wait, that's how it becomes premium. It's different if they hold out for marketing purposes but I suspect the new Colnago takes time for production purposes. There are probably only a handful in existence at this time and once they ramp up production, it'll be more readily available, but also lose a little of it's panache. Scarcity lends to luxury and exclusivity.

To be fair, the auto industry does the same thing... Product launch and then first deliveries are several months out with a dealer pre-order. The difference is most people are buying a car to keep for several years, likely as their primary transportation... Bicycle buyers are making sporadic impulse buys for something they'll sell off in a couple years and don't really need, so not having a product is ruining that spur of the moment purchase for dealers.

I still took over the bike, I didn't have another one and the season was already running. They do it so they don’t end up with Dead stock. Colnago waits to confirm the demand is high before producing enough framesets to actually get to the consumer. Same with BMC. The Teammachine R is relatively easy to get your hands on now, from tons of dealers. Trek on the other hand is big enough that they can sit with dead stock if need be, and sell on their Red Barn site. It’s pretty backwards, but the companies don’t want to spend the money to mass produce a product until they know the demand is there, which ends up with the situation we have now. Scott is on the other hand, notoriously bad at supplying to the US,

I assume bike shops would suffer from low volumes, especially with high end bikes. An Apple store could easily order large volumes of the various iPhone models and be confident of selling at least the majority of them. A bike shop might order a couple of bikes of a certain model for each of the common sizes. Plus a bike is bigger and much more awkward to ship. About this time last year I reserved and paid a deposit on a Specialized Roubaix Comp in size 56. The bike shop had already ordered the bike from the supplier. It took three months to arrive. My old bike sold within a couple of weeks, so I ended up having to buy a cheap old road bike just so I had something to ride. I live in New Zealand so unless it's air freight things can take a long time to arrive. However it doesn't sound like these wait times are all that unusual in other countries as well.

Some companies have gotten used to covid supply chain issue wait times and assume that it is the new normal even 5 years later. There's plenty of other options out there, most of the time they end up being better rational options.

Riders win races. The pros change teams and change bikes all the time, and their performances don't vary based on bikes; they're all basically equal. Tires and wheels make more difference than anything.

I think this is a question of scale. The bikes people are having to wait for are basically boutique items sold in the low thousands worldwide (iPhone in the billions & some probably still have to wait). Once you get to the lower models there's no waiting. In a perfect world there'd be stock allotment in all markets at launch but it's not that kind of product. You order a car from Singer & it takes 4 or 5 years.

what you said at the beginning reminds me the good old days. in 2017, i paid the full amount in advance for a trek project one with customised paint. in about a month, i was called it was ready for pick up. that was great compared to now a days three or four months uncertain wait. do you think it's marketing strategy? something like "hunger marketing"?

Colnago is horrible. I’ve had 2 bikes that both had issues. After the second one (V3rs) , they offered me a a new V4rs…6 months later and I’m still waiting and they upped the price! And now ghosted the local bike shop trying to help me. Insane.

So true they should have stock right away but I get it auto makers they’ve been doing this for years and it works for them the thing is that these are custom bikes and hand built so you can’t rush it because you can have major issues and then it looks bad on them but 3 months should be the most you get your bike and not I don’t know …

The bike industry is quite similar to the car industry in that way. Cars can take a while from they get launched until they reach the dealerships. Just look at the Tesla Roadster they launched that in November 2017 and still haven´t delivered any to customers that put down a deposit. So the car industry might actually be worse.

To be fair many other industries suffer these paper launches PC parts for example. The thing with those is there's only one top dog for GPUs for example and the big spenders have to wait like it or not, so really these "launches" happen just to drive up hype and stock prices. High end road bikes actually have a somewhat competitive market in comparison, so they should be careful to not let the marketing department be the ones that dictate the timelines. Honestly with the Y1Rs they could've waited until March, 1 they would've had stock at that point and 2 people are actually riding at that time (or at least starting to). Launching in December is just strange to me. I get some parts of the world Summer is now, but somehow I doubt Colnago are targeting that market specifically.
@hobmarg
@hobmarg Ай бұрын
they are forced to launch publicly though because of team training camps. Well really they have a choice, have the team riding them but no public release/info and then do consumer launch when they have produced enough to sell, or launch early before the bike is publicly ridden but then have a long lead up to being available to purchase.
@onlycoolnameleft
@onlycoolnameleft Ай бұрын
@@hobmarg Exactly, the way I see it is with the current approach the risk is being buried by other new hype bikes by the time you do have enough stock and people are actually buying things. The other way around has the downside of having to compete for media attention more but this bike specifically would've broken through given it's unorthodox style (also after a potential build up of "leaked" photos from team camps and after Pog wins some Spring classic on it).

I think the bike industry in general is moving more toward a made-to-order business model. Bike brands having stock on hand with framesets this expensive is good for the shops and the shop’s customers, but bad for the brand’s business. Would you, as a bike shop owner, tie up $60k of your own capital to stock 5 of these new bikes in your shop in the hope that you quickly sell them? In the hope that they’re the right sizes for your interested customers? Probably not.

I would understand if their reasoning was "we don't know how many people will buy this super expensive bike so we haven't made that many." But it seems like it's more that they're announcing these bikes before the factories have even started pumping them out which is stupid. If it'll be March for the first batch, do the press release and stuff in March when you have stock and THEN tell people they'll have to wait until May if you've sold them all. Supply issues due to high demand can be excused when it's something this expensive, but just straight up not having it available for all your markets is silly.

Some bicycle shops like yours, when you check on their website, show the availability of some products. When you buy these, they say they have to come from another part of the chain shop because it is not in their shopat the moment This is just unacceptable.

Yeah, this is just plain bad business practise if they are doing this. A lot of the mainstream retailers here let you know that an item is ordered from a manufacturer on request i.e they dont have it in stock but can order it for you if you want it but there will be an extra few days/weeks lead time. Some websites will advertise that they 'X' amount of units in stock and ready to ship but actually dont have any and wont tell you until youve paid, waiting for it to get shipped and get curious about why the status of your order hasnt changed to despatched and go and contact them yourself. I usually dont bother shopping with retailers like these as you cant trust them..
