Dan Clowes is just timeless. So long as you still have people who are absolutely full of hate and people who are ostracised and kind of outsiders, Dan Clowes is always going to have a place in that world. And MAN, I love Eightball era and seeing Lloyd Llewellyns evolution from the early more rough comics to the where Clowes was mastering his craft. Granted, I'm an absolute loner nut case cartoonist who hates himself more than he hates most people so this shit is for me.

I bought this comic back when it first came out and remember reading and re-reading it many times. The gag that always made me laugh was "Are you Vic Tayback?" (12:07) because it was so random. In 1989 I think Tayback was pretty much a C-list star. Now in 2021 I imagine he's mostly forgotten altogether.

Thanks again for turning me onto Clowes you guys. I tracked down the full run once I started watching your channel and issue #2 was the first one I got, and this “I hate you deeply” strip was really the one that sold me on the genius of Dan Clowes. SO funny!!!

If memory serves, Lloyd Llewellyn's last appearance is in "The Laffin' Spittin' Man" where he is consigned to a kind of nightmarish twilight existence as a vendor of cheap plastic novelties...

Mark Twain's travel writings are loaded with self-deprecating humor. I'm talking about the books: Innocents Abroad, Roughing It, Life on the Mississippi, A Tramp Abroad, and Following the Equator. He usually sets it up by describing the idiotic, prideful, greedy, or otherwise unsavory behavior of someone in his group, before revealing that person to be himself. It's one of his favorite gags throughout these books and gives him the freedom to criticize others (like when he reams out his Christian co-travelers who constantly damage archeological sites in the Middle East and "Holy Land" to steal souvenirs: he even describes with horror one person trying to chip off a piece of the sphynx!). Anyway, I love this piece, and indeed the whole run of Eightball. Looking forward to your follow-up.

I "heart" these early 8-balls. Clowes was showing some of the originals at SDCC summer '89, I was floored. It was like updated EC pages. What a breakthrough. Very funny, very dark. I wonder how much self-loathing was involved? Not at a Chris Ware level of course, but I like how you guys drill down on this business.

I just saw your 3 year anniversary video and wanted to come to the latest one to say congrats! I'm doing my first ever comics zine with a friend and I had the chance to introduce her to the cartoonist kayfabe and how great of a resource your channel is so at the same time, thank you for putting out such entertaining and informative content.

Was very lucky, along with a couple of friends, to meet Dan and Erica at a signing, so long ago, I can't remember the actual date. I got a picture taken with him and a James T. Kirk cardboard stand up. Erica was charming, but thought we spoke funny. We're from the North of England, she was probably right. Thanks for putting this up.

Pre-Grand Royal we (Upstate NY) called that haircut the "safety cut": safe to say it's short, safe to say it's long. My fave name for it is "Kentucky waterfall."

This is a funny coincidence: last week I bought the 15 first Eightballs in a second hand book store (mainly for the one-off comics I was unfamiliar with). I LOVE the "I Hate You Deeply" comic, it made me laugh out loud. I'm quite sure this comic was the inspiration for Ivan Brunetti's "HRRLFK: 1,784 Things That Make Me Vomit" (in Schizo # 1). (Please PLEASE do a vid on HAW!. Or Schizo. Or BOTH!) I ordered the Red Room TPB through my comic book shop (I already have all issues, including the Free Comic Book Day one), it should arrive sometime next week.
