The first thing is admitting to yourself you have a drink problem, and the next step is having the willpower to do something to get you away from the mental dependency on alcohol . Well done for starting on the abstence road for a few days and identifying the reasons you crave a beer or two. Its restructuring your lifestyle will help. I walk nearly every morning, 12k, and feel better in myself after losing 17 kilo in 18 months As an aside my brother was an alcoholic from drinking every night from being a teenager. Sadly he died on April 8th 2024 as result of alcoholism. I feel for some of the young staff working in the bars drinking everyday and night and what the end result will be in years to come . Great input, Sam, on this video. I look forward to the next one.

17.30 pm would be the time I would reach for what I thought was a ''well deserved'' drink. I found if I could resist until about 20.00 then the desire would go. Over time the desire dissipated and now my relationship with alcohol has changed entirely. I wish had figured all this out at 29 years old rather than 49 years old. If you want to embrace all that sobriety has to offer then I would suggest moving. No place in the world is worse than Pattaya for someone wanting to improve in this manner.

Well done. Genuinely fascinating for me as I do not like drinking during the day but come evening time I start and will not stop until I fall asleep. Fortunately over the last 2 years I have been doing the 16-8 fasting routine for 4-5 days of the week. This gives me the discipline to not drink for these evenings which is somehow easy for me to stick to and I have the reward of being able to drink at the weekend. I am 65 now and I do wish that we had been warned that persistent drinking for years destroys the entire body and not just the liver....

First off, love your channel and I appreciate you sharing your story with us. Now, I hope this helps, after Covid I developed a terrible drinking problem to the point that for 3 years I drank 4-6 drinks a day almost every single day, and I know the feeling of being stuck in a habitual routine of needing that drink after work to set into your evening and the anxiety that comes with it all too well. I knew I needed to make a change, so what I did was get my ass back in the gym, and now I drink maybe once or twice a month if I'm going out, sometimes more, I still love to drink. The rest of the time I'm focused on reaching my fitness goals and improving as a day trader, nothing will take your mind away from bad habits like the desire to get in the best shape of your life and career goal. Personally I knew it wasn't motivation that I lacked, but rather discipline, and as a 36 year old I want to make sure I go into my 40's maintaining my youth rather than start getting old haha. You got this bro!!! Get in the gym man, I promise if you work toward those abbs you won't have time to think about drinking. Also I'm hoping to be in Pattaya by years end, I would love to say hi and share a drink if I saw you!

Hi Sam. Good honest video on a realistic issue. I too was a drinker after having had my first drink at 13. I got to a point, in my mid 30’s, where simultaneously hating the hangovers, I was unable to sleep the hangover away. So I got fed up with drinking (much like you are doing right now), moved to a different location and started doing all the activities that you are doing (albeit in Northern Illinois, not Thailand. The beaches in Illinois are not quite as good as Thailand! 😊 ). You’ll find that you don’t miss drinking so much and that life has so much more meaning. Best of luck to you Sam!

How do we know where the center is, if we don't know where the edges are? It is good to take breaks to assess. The energy has to go somewhere. Substitute good habits for bad. Try meditation, yoga, gym, etc. I've practiced tai chi daily for over 25yrs in addition to those. Find a healthy method for mind, body and spirit and stick with it. Personally I find that if i don't have a beer, i am not quite in synch with the SEA culture. Something seems off. And i very rarely get drunk on the beers there. They are so weak compared to beer in USA. The key is awareness of what is being consumed and having a centered mind. We are multidimensional, creative entities inhabiting a physical mechanism. Don't let a liquid in a can or bottle hijack your life. Count your blessings.

Great video, mate. There are a lot of similarities, and I agree with what you have said. I used to do something similar for precisely the same reasons. I find what works for me is allowing 1- 2 days a week to have ANY alcohol. I also have trained myself that on alcohol-free days, it's one meal a day-healthy foods only. The 1 -2 days I drink, my diet can be whatever I want-as many meals as I want. Doing what I do, I am not hungry. Crave good, healthy food for my one meal. Starting to savour the feeling of waking with a clear head. The day I drink, I am starting to think of my alcohol-free days approaching and making plans to be productive on those days. The result. My health has improved. Anxiety has gone. My blood pressure is spot on. I manage my weight. My company productivity is peaking. I am getting significant figures at the end of each month.

Thanks for this video Sam. Before coming to Thailand I was on the brink of becoming alcoholic due to stress. Since being here my wonderful wife has helped me reduce my alcohol intake and is quite strict with me :D Because of the amount of drinking I did in the UK, I had developed a couple of physical problems. What I found was that drinking too much depletes the body's nutrients and makes it difficult to get enough, in particular vitamin B and potassium salts. I now supplement these daily and have seen great improvement in my conditions, with a view to being trouble free in the future. That would allow me to further improve with exercise. Subscribed and I will be looking forward to your future videos. All the best

It is a bad cycle. I can go months without drinking, but usually in July ( my birthday month when I try to "treat" myself) I fall off the wagon and get run over by it. If I have a couple, most likely it will be 6 - 8. Then hung over in the morning and I wake up about two hours later than I normally do and don't really get moving until a couple hours after that. Then the day is half wasted when I could have been doing something. But, the eating pattern is the same. After 6 - 8 beers (about 800+ calories), on the way home stop and pickup too much fast food (another 800 - 1000+ calories) before going to bed. But if I eat first, I usually don't feel like drinking much, or at all, because there is only room for one or the other. If I drink first, I'll make room for food later. For now, I am down to 6 - 8 beers on time every couple weeks.

1 alcoholic beverage a day is enough to start withdrawal symptoms (usually mild headaches). Alcohol withdrawal is not a pretty way to go. My dad died from severe withdrawal. He went to the hospital after falling and had no access to alcohol. 1 day away from alcohol triggered withdrawal symptoms, and every day it got worse until he passed. Yet alcohol is the most socially acceptable drug.

Awesome video mate. The question is why do you drink? Are you a habitual person and follow a routine with it? Or you like the thought of something to look forward to as a reward at 5pm? Or is it purely for the buzz of alcohol? Keisy is right. Replace the beer with something else. If its the buzz of alcohol though then building in AF days every week is the answer. At a young age your tolerance for alcohol will mean you need more of it to feel the same as you get older. The last thing we want is for another member of the Pattaya Flyers Club. Take care mate.

Good video, sorry I missed you in Pattaya on my trip there, I had no way to contact you. It is an interesting thing, Pattaya is by and large a difficult place to avoid alcohol, and if you are an ex pat that is not well versed in the Thai language and if you are not wanting to be living in isolation you will inevitably end up drinking to be social, and that often leads to drinking to get get drunk...then before you know it 1 or 2 turn into 5 or 6 and next thing it is 25-30 for the week, especially in your situation where you are on KZbin and many 2 week millionaire tourists want to meet.. For a few years living here I was without question a highly functional alcoholic, and it wasn't until I did a similar thing to you, and went to Chiang Mai for a heath retreat that I realised that pendulum between social and dependent drinking was on the later... If I can offer some advice, investigate a thai language course that maybe run on the evenings, you can reward yourself with a beer, and SM light is basically water anyway LOL.

Hand / eye coordination isn’t that fast these days haha. That leads me to think that I’m probably more suited to picking berries and nuts from a static tree. In spite of failing to pluck birds from the sky to eat, I’ve managed to keep my IQ up over 130 points my whole life, had about 10 careers, saved a few lives, had a couple of pretty girlfriends and made a few friends along the way.

Amateurs, some weeks I drink whiskey everyday and go gym too and lost 10kg in ten weeks, got slim and build a ton of muscle. Now I have a hard time dodging women in Bangkok. Maybe something to do with my Finnish genes. 😂

Yeah we Europeans are genetically adapted to drinking alcohol. Just don’t become full blown alcoholic and you’re fine
