A lot of people get a very rude awakening later in life when they develop a metal allergy, and than realized that literally so many colorants are made of metals, even in normal skin safe make-up. Polish and sculpted nails too of course, especially with the polymer side of potential allergies.

Hi Susie, I’ve been tested for allergies (and on a side note have been getting allergy shots for about 3 years now) and they don’t test you for ingredients in products like these. It is general allergies like pollen, molds, grasses; animals, dust mites and certain metals etc. there are just too many things out there to test for them all. Honestly, the simplest way to know you are allergic to a product is to simply do a patch test like one would would do for hair color.

@purplemav honey, you don't just go for a regular allergy test, these allergies aren't treated with allergy meds. It's usually allergic dermatitis. But anyways, you have to be specific in asking for allergy testing for ingredients in gels and acrylic. Most likely culprits include HEMA and other acrylates. But the lists are long. You would def have to be bery specific on what you need tested.

@purplemav and too much crossover in so many brands (there's sooo many products. And FDA allows a product to be labeled HEMA free and still contain up to 20% hema). So yeah, and every time exposed to the allergen, the chances of it becoming more severe and especially additional ingredients becoming new allergies increases each time. Not worth the risk to just patch test anything and everything. But for gel products trying to atleast get hema as well as 7, 9, or 21 free products is the better place to start atleast

I developed a terrible allergy about two years into getting acrylics. The skin of my fingers were very itchy, and around my cuticles and fingertips would blister up before peeling away about a week later (yes, I know, I should have just stopped getting my nails done, but I was devoted and dumb). I spent about 6 months trying to figure out what was causing it, isolating products and whatnot. Turns out it was a reaction to the UV light! Wear sunscreen kids!

Same... I had isolated mine to either the primer or the wattage... My fix was to get a lil flash cure light to do the nails as I go that way I only need to full cure one fell swoop at the end. This seemed to help with my sensitivity. Lotion is so hard to deal with if we're trying to keep everything dehydrated during the cure process... I'm sure you know how rough that is.. those gloves that are sold market wide, I can't see doing much either, in my opinion at least. Since they leave the problem area vulnerable anyhow.. But yea... Lotion lotion lotion, after....NO DOUBT

What you’re experiencing is contact dermatitis. I got this a day after getting my nails done even though prior to that I had been getting them done for years. It was itchy, there were fluid spots under my skin, blisters and skin peeling. Turns out this can happen due to your gel not being set properly and something called HEMA. HEMA is used in almost all gel polishes that don’t say “HEMA-free” and it basically are monomers used to polymerise gel polish. Getting this allergic reaction is due to the HEMA products touching the skin (cuticle, under the fingertip, etc)

Just ran into the same issue. After some research I found it might be a HEMA allergy. Fortunately there are hypoallergenic gel polishes out there! Not sure how valid these brands are but apparently Light Elegance and Fuzion are HEMA free. Hope you find some brands that work better!

Thank you thank you thank you Suzie for talking about allergies, it's been bugging me for months now and I still have no clue what to do! That I only get all the itching and blisters when I do it myself at home! Been going to the same nail salon for over a decade and it never happened. Until covid hit and i started doing it on my own. Had a great 6 months or so, and the allergies began. Went back to the nail salon to do it and amazingly it stopped! What have I been doing wrong, Suzie? Was it my brushes? I've been trying my best not to let the gel touch my skin, but still can't stop the reaction. I tried using "clean" gel products, got better for a while but came back again. It has to be my way of doing it or the products I used. Please Suzie, could you please talk more on this subject?

I found the thing that was making bumps after I was all done... First time, I thought it was some cheap gel polish., Efiled it off right away.. washed really good... Tried again a week or 2 later with a different polish I trusted, it happened again.... But I had used all the things before and it didn't bother me. So.... I've isolated my issue to either the acid free ph primer, or too high of a light wattage... Ya know, each layer I'm going in and out of the light. But once I got a lil light to do a flash cure one at a time and then doing the 1 minute or so at the end with my full hand,that didn't break my hands out... So.... The light frequency or the primer was my deal. Hopefully this helped give others an idea of what theirs might be....

I developed an allergy, and switched all my products. I was still getting a terrible reaction and discovered my protein bond is full of hema and the only product that was not switched. Don't forget about your primer if you think you are allergic.

It's mythl methacrylate, it's in everything, but it's easier for it to tough your skin when using monomer & acrylic . When using something more controlled like hard & soft gel it's harder to get a reaction. Becareful the make alot of things around our food that has it & dental crowns , fill ins, ect.... are made with it too

Many nail products people are getting are from overseas and it is very inexpensive and is definitely still used and causes Onycholosis. I found the first five random nail products I looked up on Amazon contained it. If you look up do salons still use MMA? the article reads “ Thus it became “somewhat” illegal. The FDA left it up to the states to regulate its use. Although it is dangerous nail salons still use MMA to save money and it is not illegal in all 50 states.

I've done my own acrylics for years, and I've always been able to keep the itchiness under control with antihistamines and I was always very careful to keep the product off of my skin. Someone suggested I try gel, so I tried polygel and had the worst reaction ever. Not even antihistimines helped. I'm on week 3 of healing. I will try Gel-X next since I know I am able to tolerate the gel glue (and gel polish) very well with no issues. 😢

It could also be a combination of things. Eg. Coworker cleaned with bleach, I went over all of it with counter cleaner, frequently; hand sanitizer, harsh hand soap. Yes this was during lockdown. And my fingers got so bad, it was almost excruciating to touch anything. Washing my hair was like sliding my fingers across razorblades. Basically, what I'm trying to say, is narrow down what u put on or use on your hands. Eliminate to the bare minimum, and go from there

My allergy was definitely an ingredient in gel products. I only know becuase I used acrylic to protect my damaged painful nails when I stopped using all gel products while they grew out a bit and that did not worsen any of the reaction. Instead the symptoms I’d been experiencing while using gel products began slowly disappearing and my regrowth looked almost good as new. 2 months later, my nails no longer need any added layer of protection! My nails are healthier and thriving and the skin around & under them hasn’t looked better in ages! There are still a few hardened hyponychium spots under a few nails and a few calloused eponychium that just need more time and TLC, but nothing anyone else would ever be able to notice but me. After all, we know our own bodies best!

My experience with a oufull alergy was after finished in rhe nail academy. After a deep manicure i did in my selve. And it was couse a cheap painting gel and acetone. For 6 months was just imposible for me to tuch even one of my brushes. Or gel my gel bottles and again have a skin reaction Doesnt matter how clean was everything. It seams un abuse of taching products us acetone, gel dispersión layer , with alredy sensitive hands was producing an alergy that in that moment made my hands us gloves. And also affected different parts of my body. My nails even feld. My hands where us a piece of Wood when i touch them. Us when we go to the dentist and they put you anestesy. The same sensation. And of course so eache and fell us fiyer in them. I stell keep that picts. They where Full of bubles. That was us if i where literally bourn my hands with fiyer or i where put them in a corrosive acid. My fingers and hand where double sides us normal. The doctor of course told me to never again tuch this products. Even my nails fold in the next months. I didnt new where to hid my hands all that time. I has to use cottong gloves for a time. Was really a horrible time for me, couse was also my ilussion and i need to work us manicure couse im invalid to work in my regular profesión. And i invest a credit to go to school and buy all i need to work from home. And the time i invest also. About 8 months. Thousands of hours in school and in home praticscing 🤦🏻‍♀️ . I was patient. Take care of them and after few months, not touching nothing with out gloves. I start to practic again. Really carefullly. From that time has pased 6 years. Im always carefull. I know what products are dangerows for me. I keep everything really clean. I never do often manicures in my selve. Just us normal. Every 4 weeks. Their its no problem if i like before. I work with no problems. Im not so sentive now . But im carefull even to breaz acrilic or gel dust of filling. Couse its un acumulating alergy also in this proffesion. So what we breaz, even what we cant see us the gel vapors its acumulating in our bodies us tecnician that work every day with this products. Its nit just to tuch them. And that can cause later lot of problems. Headache. Body alergies. Bad gest infections. So never play with this products with out understanding how your house can be also contamined with them. Your clotes. How dangerows its to work in home with a Space just for this. And if course after have study. Its dangerous to work in house, uf you have children couse you can clean, but that stays in the floar and they can breaz it. Us if you have dogs or cats. When i see videos of people that really dont know nothing about this products making nails i really Fell bad . In ucranian or Rusia the nail tecnician school its so serius. The first you will study its about Health. Contamination. About quimic. About the uv lamps or led lights . About the dangerous… not about manicure, nail art or painting. Then about the diferentes products and the nail structure. What to use depending of the client caracterist. So… its not for amateurs using this products.

For example more people are becoming allergic to HEMA in nail products, HEMA has been around for years BUT some Brands use way too much so now people are being overexposed in concentration causing allergies to HEMA. I was having a horrific reaction whenever I did my nails with a polygel kit I had. I did an elimination test over a few sets and found out I was allergic to the gel glue I was using and the slip solution. Now I would onky do one or two nails with a new product to see if Im allergic so I dont break out my whole hand.

I have been getting my nails done off and on and just started to again. I get acrylic and for the first time a few hours afterward my fingers itch like crazy on the tops and underneath. The skin underneath will become a huge layer of skin that would peel off. So not sure what caused it since im not new to acrylic nails.

I took a break for 6 months and was able to use gel colors that gave allergies before… I also switched base and top coat…I found that I’m not allergic to hema and has no reaction when using hema gels versus hema free gels… another change I made is to buy the lamp (an expensive one) comes with the gel brand… I think my previous reaction might be improper curing of the products…

It is common. Not normal but common. The powder to liquid ration could be off, the nail plate could be prepped too aggressively and thinned causing exothermic reactions or you could be allergic to acrylic. Try polygel or builder gel and see if you experience the same burning/itching sensations. Good luck!!

I'm so glad I asked *YOU!* I did a little more research on Google and discovered DIP POWDER ALLERGY EVEN HAS ITS OWN NAME IN THE INDUSTRY: *"DIP FLU"* because in addition to the redness and skin irritation associated with normal nail product allergies, there's also flu-like symptoms of runny nose, nausea, cough, chest pain, and other flu symptoms that can last a day, a week, or more. This is not related to allergies but I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me. I'm not a nail tech and I only do my own nails. I've recently started using gel polish. If I use a uv/led cure rubber base coat, should I use a gel base coat with that? If I do use them both what do I use first?

You can use a thin layer of regular base coat then go in with rubber base coat. That's what I do. It adds longevity for my clients. Alcohol to disinfect the nail plate and surrounding skin, dehydrator to rid the nail plate of any oils, thin layer of Gelish base coat, then I go in with rubber base coat from The Gel Bottle or Madam Glam in the colour Phillipines, then I go in with two coats of gel polish colour, then I top coat with rubber top coat from The Gel Bottle or Madam Glam. I cure each layer for 30-60 seconds. Hope this helps.

Hi galz is there maybe someone who knows who can give advice as Suzi never replies to our questions. I use full cover tips. I apply the gel to the false nail, cure for 10 seconds. Then I do 3x layers of acrylic. I suddenly developed contact dermatites and my dermatologist said that it will be there forever. Does someone know if I can use the full cover tips and apply glue to stick them as I wanna do away from the gel and see if it might be that. I dont know if it's the acrylic powder. Otherwise I have to go back to tips. And I hate tips as I'm very hard handed and they break easily. If there's someone who can pse advise🤗

Full cover tips with glue seems to be fine for me and my allergies. To be safer, I even started using ABS plastic nails instead of gel nails along with regular (non-gel) polish. I don't get an allergic reaction but, unfortunately, my nails are very flat, so this method doesn't work well for me because there's always a gap that regular nail glue can't fill. If you don't have super flat nail beds, you would probably have success with full cover nails and glue. Good luck!

I’m a doctor & Suzy is right, ISOLATE👍🏼. If you experience side effects of nail products, ask your nail tech to take a pic of the ingredients list on the jar, bottle, etc & simply call your doctor(if your doctor already knows what your allergic to) & email the ingredients or ask your doctor for a referral to an allergist if this is a new thing👍🏼. With as many options as there are for nails today, you’ll be able to find a product that doesn’t cause you a reaction🤗. But any good nail tech will help their client, like Suzy.

I feel like this anser is really obvious a d not helpful. Obviouly, isolating and testing is the way to find out. But how yould you even do that,practically, as a consumer? You cannot go and just buy all ingredients that make up the products and patch test them all on yourself. Nor could you buy all other brands and try them. Its not practical ald leads to waste And you cannot take ingredients out of the product.
