If you remember from the first movie, Morpheus said "When the Matrix was created, there was a man born inside. It was he who freed the first of us." He was talking about the 5th One who chose to save Zion in the previous incarnation.

20:45 the cake scene: It was on my third rewatch in the theater, about a month and a half into the film's release so I was pretty confident most of the other patrons were also doing rewatches, that when we got to this scene, I bellowed out with that one line from When Harry Met Sally -- "I'll have what she's having!" the whole auditorium burst into laughter.

Haha, "I feel like any other color would be sacrilege." So true. The highway fight is pretty great, the Burly Brawl is damn cool the first time but gets kind of samey on rewatch, but the Chateau Showdown is the secret star of the entire franchise. Maybe second only to Shu Lien vs Jen for awesome fights with melee weapons.

The Merovingian’s henchmen are supernatural in nature, vampires, werewolves, etc (which is why they are exiled from the Matrix). They barely explain it in the movie, but it’s addressed in the video game Enter the Matrix.

It's not really much of a connection. I understood or at least made the connection a little when the Oracle made mention and when Persephone kept a silver bullet in her gun, but I guess the pacing of the movie couldn't get bogged down with exposition like the pacing of the game enough to explain what they were... Besides, it wouldn't have changed the fight sequences or the plot in any case. It was just cool

There's an argument to be said about the 100 Smith Fight - things got so complicated with so much going on in The Matrix, that it had to "lower the resolution" in order to continue as an overall program (of billions of humans). That's why it suddenly goes into CGI. And my brain is ok with that. I like that, as fan-canon (fanon).

The 1st Matrix is my alltime fave movie. The sequels stunk. I understand everything about all the plot elements, even all the nuanced subplots. The sequels stink because the Wachowskis made Neo overpowered. There was no story arc of him struggling to master his powers & suffering losses & setbacks only to triumph in the end over adversity. I.e. ~ the "hero's journey." Or rather it was poorly done. It just bored me to indifference. And I really had high hopes for it

As you said it... the fact that they used real cars insted of cheap ugly CGI as nowadays makes such a scene 1000x better than the chases in todays kiddie movies.
@silikon2
@silikon2 4 ай бұрын
And this very movie has ugly obvious CGI in the Burly Brawl scene. (Probably wasn't cheap at the time though.) When Neo flies it's likewise obvious most of the time. It was very disappointing when the movie came out because how amazing the bullet time was in the original. And it looked very real... because it was. They had to process it of course but it was based on real images. It's not like this CGI has aged... it was every bit as painfully obvious back in the day as now. I personally would have CUT the burly brawl down much shorter if not entirely from the film. It's really that bad.

There is a lot of CGI cars mixed in there. Look again. But it is a great sequence. There are vfx breakdowns of the Hwy sequence out there if you wanna see how they did it. Not to mention a few shots were the camera fly through and under cars in an impossible unrealistic manner, betraying its CGI origins

I think 2 and 3 got a lot of hate because they're really one big movie split in the middle, when people were expecting two stand alone sequels. Also Empire is fucking rad immediately :P You don't have to watch Return of the Jedi before you look back and say "oh okay, I guess that wasn't stupid." @@antarfodoh It's still a good comparison though! It's okay to leave the mid-chapter with a big cliffhanger or some things unexplained or unconfirmed, but it's best not to leave people thinking "I...didn't really buy that." I think _Reloaded_ suffered for having SO MUCH exposition in the Architect scene so it felt like "okay so THIS is how EVERYTHING WORKS, now you know", very near the end, but then to throw another twist right after that which doesn't feel like it fits or relates to what we just learned.

It took me far too many years and far too many watches to realize the Oracle is actually working for the system, not the humans. Her role is to perpetuate the Prophecy of The One. Free humans need to find the One, the One needs to understand their abilities so they can reach the Source, the One needs to reach the Source to save all of humanity by protecting the Matrix. Trinity was a wildcard the equation couldn't account for, though. I can only assume the previous iterations of the One have never been in love like Neo has.

This franchise is a CGI showcase; especially after the first one. Arguably it does go a bit OTT on the CGI, but the result is an awesome sci-fi story. For me, the fight scenes are INCREDIBLE. Martial arts movies are a whole rabbit hole in themselves. The team who worked with the directors for MONTHS were a highly-rated Hong Kong martial arts performing group. One of them was cast as Serif. One of the things that jumped out at me about the Matrix fight scenes, is that Neo is just doing ENDLESS combos. Most fights happen in little spurts of a minute or so, where you kinda have your environment figured out, understand your threats, and their priority, and know what you're gonna do next.....but you CAN'T possibly think more than a few moves ahead at any one time. You have to move SO FAST, to move your body from one position to another. You need to make the decision on what you're gonna do even quicker. Most movie fights are constant ;) STOP / START / STOP / START. There's breathing space between each choreographed combo. This flows endlessly from one to another, to another, to another. As much as I LOVE this franchise, plenty of folks didn't like anything after the original movie. It was a standalone movie after all. The two sequels Reloaded, and Revolutions arrived close to each other, in demand for more. There's also an oft-forgotten Annimatrix, which is a feature length movie, comprised of 9 separate animated shorts, done by the World's best animators in their own styles. It's fascinating. They're set within the Matrix universe, in some way or another. For the most part, they're completely unconnected to the events in the movies.

I really like all the matrix properties, especially the animatrix. There lore is a really fun spin on older concepts. Even Resurections is worth a watch, maybe off the channel, it gets a little meta and takes a departure from some canonicity, which is probably why it didn't do great.
@BunBun299
@BunBun299 4 ай бұрын
I think a lot of the negative reputation of Reloaded and Revolutions has to do with the very high bar set by the original The Matrix. They aren't quite up to that standard. On rewatching, I found that both the sequels had aged quite well compared to a lot of other movies out there. With the appropriate lowering of expectations, they're quite good. Resurrection, however, was just awful. Avoid at all costs.

not all the cars were cgi - any of the crashes / explosions were pretty much real (good luck trying to simulate that many bits of glass) - the big trucks the camera goes around and under are CGI as were cars going directly AT trinity that turn out the way for her - but the ones down the sides are real. EDIT: even the car the agent jumps on, where its engine is crushed - that's real - the agent isn't obviously, that's a CGI Agent, but the car had a mechanism on the inside - the engine itself was actually in the trunk/boot of the car - and in the front of the car they had clamps set with timers/radio signal that would pull in/down on the metal - and then a pole shoots out the bottom to flip it over - like a hidden "spring". Honestly, this stuff is CRAAAAZY.

There’s a documentary with Trinity’s stand-in riding the bike. I forgot her name, but that’s someone dodging actual cars. It’s all choreographed, of course, but the stuntwoman rode much closer to the oncoming cars than expected. It sort of freaked everyone out. They loved it!
@sarcasticstartrek7719
@sarcasticstartrek7719 Ай бұрын
@@GrandManor Yes absolutely! The stuff on the bike and things to do with the bike interacting with cars in wide shots is all real - and yes they're going a combined speed of about 50-60 MPH (but not the 100+ MPH depicted with good camera work). The CGI stuff is the stuff that goes super close to the CAMERA. Whilst the bike stunt actor IS doing "all the work", there are some CGI cars that go by, to make it super exciting to the viewer, inches from the Camera. And we know the camera wasn't darting in and out like some shots show because we know how it was filmed that's to that documentary - mostly on a crane riding along the side. Sorry if my original explanation sounded a bit confusing. This is, imo THE greatest car chase scene in cinema history.

The main issue with The Matrix Reloaded was that it set up a lot of stuff for the third that then really wasn't followed up on and means it falls flat. As a film in itself, it's not as good as the first but at the time I thought it was OK. Its biggest sin is bringing back Agent Smith as a villain which is a common stupid sequel decision - yes that villain was iconic, but that means you remove the satisfaction of defeating him by bringing him back, lads. Even if it does make more sense in the context of the Matrix where they can just copy his programme than in lots of other films.

Yes, this one had its great sequences, and also a couple that are interminably boring (the Frenchman, the Architect). Even the audiences of the time were commenting on how bad the CGI humans were (particularly Neo in the pole fight), but how great the mechanical CGI was. Truth to tell, I can never keep the events in 2 and 3 distinct from one another (not even the titles) but still enjoy revisiting them from time to time. Also, Link is a replacement for Tank. The actor got a bit too full of himself and demanded way too much for the sequel(s), so they wrote him out. His sister is in it though, and he gets a slight mention.

Sorry dude. Love your reactions. But in this case the CGI wasn't dated. It was bad, even when we all watched it in theatres 2003. It was also almost the polar opposite of the bullet time folks wanted reprise again at the time. Ppl wanted real people in bullet time like the first film, not terrible CGI Keanu looking the Mummy 2 The Rock. This definitely wasn't just a case of CGI "back then." A lot of it was painful to watch even then. If you think you can notice it on a big screen tv or computer screen, imagine it in a 50ft+ theatre screen.

Scorpion King comparison is an exaggeration :) I remember a huge squad of people seeing it when I was in school and comparing notes next day. Some did not like the brawl because of CGI. Some said "yeah you could definitely notice the CGI, could've been better, but was still a cool fight." Some didn't really pick up on it directly but it did feel off/artificial. (This is where some readers go "well anyone who didn't see it like I did is an idiot/obsessive nitpicker" haha.) Actually reminds me of _Rogue One_ CGI faces, which I hated but a lot of people shrugged off because they still liked the movie and those characters.

Not using the same bullet-time tech is definitely a big disappointment. I remember watching the behind the scenes stuff for the first movie when it came out on video and they were talking about the bullet-time set up and how it could be done in any shape, really. Circles, spirals, arcs... s-curves... etc... and I was thinking when they were making the sequel, "It'll be cool to see what new things they do with bullet-time and the shapes they'll move the camera in..." And then they just used CGI, which definitely made for some crazy camera movements, but wasn't quite what I was wanting to see. And as far as I know... it's not just the sequels. I don't think ANY movie has ever used bullet-time again, the same way the first Matrix movie did it. Every imitator of it has done it another way, usually CGI, or just filming in slow motion with a camera moving around them, etc... For how amazing, revolutionary and effective the technology was in The Matrix... it's kinda crazy that it's never been used again. It could be done with even better quality with advancing technology, and could look amazing today. But even The Matrix Resurrections didn't use it. WTF?

IMO there's a bunch of parts people can go either way on. The cave orgy is the first, I think a lot of folks don't give a damn about the French guy's wife drama or green orgasms, I personally like the vibe of all the endgame going down with Morpheus's speech giving flavor but you have to admit the whole thing is a contrivance to make the climax work (or, "it was their destiny" if you're generous haha), and the Architect's mannerism was a bit much. And, big picture there's a feeling of just being more bloated compared to the super tight original.
