It is attributed in most English hymnals to a prince of India. However, recent comments on the net attribute the authorship to a Garo tribal leader from northeast India. ( The Garos were better known as fierce warriors and headhunters 100+ years ago, till a missionary took the gospel to them)

I have often pondered the heavy cost that unknown prince or leader must have paid for leaving the religion of his forefathers and following a seemingly Western religion. Again the story reg the Garo leader was that he and his entire family were martyred as someone mentioned earlier in this thread . But we see in the song that the prince decided unconditionally whole heartedly to follow- unlike many of us who follow Christ only when conditions are perfect for us

The understanding we have is limited because we are not omniscient (all knowing or knowing it all) -so our discernment is partial because we base it on our understanding, whereas God weighs all & makes an impartial decision.
