So true. My 6acre forest property, I designed the house with wood heat boiler in the garage with radiant floor throughout, designed and installed myself 15 years ago. The wood burner heats domestic hot water too. It was a motivation to collecting all the dead windfall and clear the underbrush, definite win during fire season. I have one of the cleanest properties in my area because of it.

I would love to see that "5 acre" figure supported by numbers: providing for how many people; what level of animal protein does that include; what crops; how do I produce fertility items such as manure; how much firewood produced on site; etc

Been searching in AB for 3+ years… one big deterrent so far, very poor well water quality, one or more of iron bacteria, sulphur bacteria, or TDS > 1600. Maybe where you were looking, north of Edmonton (haven’t gone that far), but weather and bugs are real issues up there. BC politics and price (1.5x or more than AB) keep us looking here for now.

we have just over 9 acres, need some more trees as shelterbelt, fruit/ naturalization and privacy but do have some already at least; about 25% in pasture, 25% in rough land with house and out buildings in centre of property...not too bad, but I can see areas to improve still... thanks for the good advice!

I was expecting you to mention the negative side specifically of wildlife. Good to know what creatures might be in your area that are poisonous, for example. If there are cougars about. Likely something in just about every area.

Well that’s a given, but we’re talking about assets for a property in this series.

Heck yeah, my sisters would both be interested in that info. I have an acre near Mansfield, Arkansas it's a narrow strip though with a slope, but it's a jungley sort of property. I thought about selling some of the trees I need to take down to the West Fraser logging/lumber sawmill company in town, but I'm not sure.

Those trees give off negative ions as I understand it for fresh air especially after a rain
