Hello. I'm Haena, the makeup artist in the video. I saw a lot of comments saying, “You have a pretty face, but why do you do cover makeup?” At first, she said, "I want to keep my original look and put on makeup," but looking at her video 6:26 ~7:25, she is satisfied with her makeup and wants to make both eyebrows the same color. I requested a more perfect cover makeup. I love her face without makeup. I think it’s easy for us to say “she’s beautiful with the vitiligo” “she doesn’t need to do any cover up” No one can really understand what stress and hurt she’s been through, and isn’t it normal that a girl just wishes to be “normal”? 7:00 - I can only imagine the conflict she's feeling here. On one hand, she's fully embraced Vitilgo and all that it brings. It makes her unique, special in both good and bad. But on the other hand, seeing herself fit the "normal" stereotype probably reminded her of the bad times she experienced with Vitilgo. How much she was stared at, or maybe even teased. And seeing herself look "more normal" probably made her imagine a life without Vitilgo, even for just a brief second. I'm not trying to psychoanalyze her. I just could tell that she was clearly conflicted on what to feel after the makeup artist did an amazing job. I would be too, in that position.

She knows that she shouldn't hide anything, that "it is what it is" (quote), but her happiness at the end when she looks "normal" again showed how painful it has been for her to be bullied by people around her. It is easy for many of us to say that she's beautiful and unique, but if we saw someone different from us on the street, our first reflex is to stare. She said just the staring made her feel uncomfortable and sad. I hope that she will stay confident the way she is, and in some moments when the mind is weak, she has this kind of make-up to make her feel comfortable in the middle of the staring crowd for a few hours. I really admire and love her attitude and strength!

I really liked your post because it really made me see the situation very differently. At first I thought “why is she covering it up after saying she wanted her vitiligo to show.” In her other video she had mentioned that she would be afraid people would think she is a freak and sometimes such perceptions translate to how we feel about ourselves. Your post made me realize that sometimes we need to do things like this not to cover up our differences but to realize instead that despite our differences we are all really just the same. It only took one tiny step of cover up makeup to make her look like everybody else if you will, but at the end of the day it didn’t make much of a difference because it was all her to begin with, it’s like the moment you realize “actually I’m not that different from everybody else.” There is one undeniable truth and that is that we are all human no amount of differences can possibly change that.

I identified with this and her reactions. The whole point of makeup is to make ourselves look better, different, or to be fun. You don't need to feel guilty for being excited to see yourself with makeup on or even for thinking you look better with it. What matters is that you are happy with yourself and can be confident when you take it off again. I started using makeup in order to cover acne and scarring and at a time when I was also not very happy with how I looked in general. It developed into a cycle of covering the parts of my face I was embarrassed of and then coming home, taking it off, and feeling incredibly ugly. At the time that I was able to start healing my skin, I completely stopped using makeup because I wasn't going out as much as it was COVID and I wanted to let my skin heal. Down the road when I started experimenting with makeup again, this time to be creative instead of to cover up, I went in the opposite direction and made the makeup very bold and noticeable, not wanting to ever just try to do makeup to make myself look "better" while trying not to look like I was wearing any. I wanted it to be so different from how I look that I wouldn't experience what I felt before when I would take it off and hate how I looked. Now, I've gone into the middle. The looks I'm trying are more natural, but intended to enhance my features and make me look "prettier". But now when I take it off and look in the mirror, I'm happy with how I look and pleased to see my face cleaned of the stuff so that I can enjoy how I already look. I have the opposite gut reaction to a few years ago. I actually feel happy now when I see myself after removing makeup.

So far as vitiligo goes, this girl has the ideal outcome. She is already light skinned so it's not as apparent and she has a nice half and half! I've personally known people who have bleached eyebrows or half of their hair to achieve the exact look this girl has naturally. Many people with this condition are not so "lucky" in the sense that their pigmentation is blotchy/asymmetrical. I personally love the high contrast look on dark skin however. I just think it's so unique and eye catching

In Korea since everything is based on looks and outward appearance, it must be really hard for her on the daily. I know the makeup artist didn't mean it in a mean way but at first the way she assumed or recommended her to cover it just shows how most people react unfortunately. We constantly judge others by appearance. You cannot get a job without photo resume in Korea. We are the plastic surgery capital of the world. Korean women can't go outside without makeup without being judged. Celebrities are pushed and expected to have undergone plastic surgeries, yet pretend that they haven't. Even children get plastic surgeries. Children are also indoctrinated to hate and ridicule ugly people while praising and valuing people for their beauty. There is no other superficial country like Korea.
