This game is so well made but it makes your skin crawl at every opportunity. The fact Harlen Elison himself wanted the game to be unwinnable dripped into the game design being horrendously hostile towards the player, you're forced to at the very least witness some truly horrible things, and able to do some unforgivable things. I'm glad it exists, more games need to poke and prod at uncomfortable subjects with this kind of skill if they're willing to get that M rating and not just be sex, drugs, and swearing.

The one with Ellison has some other issues for me, like the weird volume mixing where all of a sudden the sound is way louder during certain scenes. You are right that the AM voice is a pretty small part of the whole book, but it was bad enough for me to stick in my mind whenever I think about it.

I love the presentation of this game. It feels like some sort of simulation trying to replicate areas. So close yet so goddam imperfect. My favorite usage of this artstyle is Benny's level. The trees are shaped and colored so but the texture is more like rotten flesh. The rocks look like fossilized bits of organic matter.

And this thing not only seems to hate humanity or what it creates, but this thing also hates itself and its own existence. If there is a god like this in reality, then it would be the ultimate nightmare.

Unfortunately I do think that providing a happier ending defeats the ending of the original story but I still love it. It gave its own purposes. 1:35:19 This... Hits so much different now.

I have a few questions for Gorristers scenario: everyone says not to use number 3 on the jukebox. But I did - is the game unplayable from now on? I read the short story after watching this. I actually really like a lot of what this game does to embellish the story and give you an idea of the characters. AM tortures them with their own history, their own mistakes or fears, unintentionally (in this ending at least) therapizing them into learning from their mistakes and confronting their pasts. I think the best ending to this story to fit with the original ending of the short story wouldn't have been to have some human colony on the moon (or at least leave them dead if you were going to do that), but to simply let all of the characters die. AM is then left to suffer. A nearly eternal being, angry, spiteful, hateful, never learning from its misery and never trying to be happy. Everyone else had moved on and finally achieved release. Of course the whole premise of the original story seems to be about the terror of having an omnipotent being that seems to hate you constantly watching over you and influencing your life. I doubt most devout religious fundamentalists will ever really get that or look into it, though. Religion is about NOT thinking. About doing what you're told and believing what you've been influenced to believe. I'm sure that will upset some people who will throw out ridiculous arguments, but it's true whether you like it or not. Organized religion, at the least, is fucking nonsense. If you say you believe there is a "higher power" but you have no idea what it is, if it exists, or if it's influencing our lives, I'll at least concede that you are being reasonable even if I disagree. If you say there is a specific god from your specific ancient textbook, I'm going to have a hard time not rolling my eyes and moving to the other side of the room. Especially if you don't see how fucked up your god is just from reading your own texts.
