I Have Problems with Mixed Weather Races VS Ai in AMS2

**UPDATE**
After some great suggestions on the comments, I extended the test race to 15 laps. Same conditions as this vid w 106% difficulty. By lap 6 I was leading the race by 8 seconds on Berger when the rain started. The intensity of rainfall and level of saturation did take longer and was more gradual to ramp up! I was able to do about one more lap out on slicks before the tires started going light green approaching blue. I got into the pits safely, swapped tires, and then was able to build an even further gap on Berger and Prost. Some ai though didn’t even pit!!!
I still think ai is OP on slicks when the track gets very shiny and I was shocked to see some ai still on slicks through the entire race. So I think there are still some issues but a mixed weather race provided the transition time is extended seems doable, stressful but doable. 😅
I recorded the gameplay and if I get enough requests I’ll put together a short replay of it all.

Overview
I am really looking forward to running some custom offline championships in AMS2, and in particular using real historical weather. In a quick 5 lap race I test a mid race downpour in Montreal, and discuss the issues I seem to continue having in my mixed condition races. Let me know your thoughts, as of now I can not see myself comfortably running a custom championship where a mid race storm might occur. The ai seems to be OP at their ability to get to the pits ahead of the player.

Yeah, i see this in AMS2 discussions all the time. Human drivers complaining the rain doesn't affect the AI at all. Not exactly my cup of tea, but you're right, Reiza should fix this some. edit; Honestly seeing you in 25th tells me something is off there for sure.

Ya Reddit is filled with drivers having the same problems Roddy. I’m not the best wet driver but you’ve been on track with me and know I’m no slouch either.🙂

I assumed that it was when I mix time acceleration and multiple weather slots. One thing that I’ve learned is to not stay out 1 lap longer than the AI, even if the traction is still sufficient to stay out on slicks.

Yes, as soon as any indication that rain will start and likely keep coming down my best results have been when I came in for wets asap before the ai.

To get the best results, do not put Weather or Time Acceleration (when using Real Weather) higher than x10. x5 will work best in most cases. LiveTrack (how fast the track gets wet or dry) is directly tied Weather/Time Acceleration. So anything higher than x10 mean that in a single minute you could get as much water as if it had rained for a much longer time - so you'll have no time to get to the pits. With x5 (or at most x10) you'll find the AI is much, much better balanced. It would also be no fun for anyone if the entire field was running off the track and retiring.

Right so I didn’t use time acceleration but I did have the two weather slots sync to race which would then accelerate the translations in a short race. Same thing I guess? Thanks for your comment!

@@kevin_m exactly! so if you have it sync to race, and it's a really short 5 lap race, the 2nd slot (being rain) means that in the span of 3 minutes it will have rained as much as would have rained normally over the course of 1 hour. By default, each slot lasts for an hour, and is accelerated from there. So x2 means each slot is 30 minutes. So the track immediately became over-saturated and us the players have no time to judge the right time to get to pits, much less make it there in time to not lose all traction.

@@64ElMariachi excellent info! Thank you for that, it makes sense. Now, I have still seen a problem with ai having more grip w slicks. Try starting a sunny race with a wet track where the ai are on slicks to start because the track will dry. I had a super hard time at Monaco in this scenario. Wet tires cooked immediately and slicks couldn’t hold either. It’s a challenge. :)

Thx Kevin. Absolutely agree, mixed conditions or transitional weather is an issue. You summarized it perfectly. And I am also relieved that I am not the only one suffering from this. Will have to re-check my weather decisions for my 1990 CC ...

So I was thinking of doing an ‘88 champ. My idea is that in races where it was wet (Silverstone/Hockenheim) I will manually set the weather/track to remain at the conditions experience for most of the race. So maybe rain during the entire British GP, and then a wet-to-drying German GP (where I could start on wets and try my best to judge when to come in for slicks). Japan had rain at end but I’d ignore that. With little time in my schedule due to work etc, it is just a real risk that 45mins into a race it’s ruined by an overly exaggerated gap in grip levels against the ai. But I’m hopeful this is on Reiza’s radar.

It's more than just pitting, when temps drop on clouds coming in the grip drops with cooler temps but the AI are not affected. So as a feature, it's not usable.

Kev I dont even bother my friend : ), unless I start the race in the storm then the Ai is better to a degree for some reason for me but yeah they have those special all season sports on 😂. I agree with your overall assessment here mostly. Depending on the track as well. I found Le mans with those racing line puddles in LMHD were cool with the Ai a bit. Excellect points man

Thanks Dan! I have my fingers crossed it improves as I’m such a stickler for simming real events as close as I can anyway! My description has details of a second test. I might make a follow up vid if enough want to see another example. 😊

Always been an issue and a real shame as the weather transitions are very good. I just stick with cloudy weather now as it helps a little with track and tyre temperatures and avoids the jagged shadows.

Yes the cloud cover really makes the game look great! I’ve lowered the saturation slightly using nVidia filters and imo improves the look as well. Thanks for your feedback!

It's very frustrating. I've felt this way about the AI in these conditions since I started playing this sim. It would be nice seeing them struggling for traction or improving the player's traction, although that wouldn't be authentic. Well highlighted Kevin and good racing (when you could) 🙂👌🏾

Thanks Jay! After checking some Reddit posts, I was (almost) certain it was’t just a “me thing”. But I’ll accept I need to practice more too!😅Fan of all Reiza has done and the great work to improve the game. A mixed condition race where I feel I could compete fairly and not wreck trying to pit would be amazing.🍻

Yeah, it's not as noticable on the lesser powerd cars but it's more noticable and anoying as the power levels increase. Great video!

Have you tried it only with this length of race? My thought is that perhaps the transition is too quick for you to be able to make it to the pits before the crossover point, so maybe doing a longer race would make that transition slower. But, that doesn't fix the fact that the AI were relatively unaffected, so idk...

It’s a fair question. I think with unscripted, real time transitions in a longer race there could be a chance that the course doesn’t get saturated/soaked as quickly allowing the player an opportunity to pit. I have some time tomorrow and am going to give this a try! 30 minute race Sun to Rain and see if I have a longer transition to work with to get in for wets. The time compression makes the track soaked within half a lap if you do a short race like this. I recommend at least a 25% of a full GP if you want to mix weather.

That's true. However, while a longer transition would be better for us players to adjust, the AI still has way more grip, traction and overall just seems to be less affected by it. As if they still had "green" tyres ...

This has been an issue since day one and ignored by Reiza. When you really get into this game, it's still full of bugs. Still the best AI, but multiple weather is just not playable, which makes it pointless.

Appreciate the comment. I hope Reiza can continue to fine tune things. I’ve updated the description with my latest test based on others suggestions. I had a pretty fun race, but yes still think some fixes are needed.
