In this American Rifleman TV segment of "I Have This Old Gun," we take a look at the features and history of the American version of the Lewis Light Machine Gun chambered in .30-'06 Sprg. While originally designed around the .303 British cartridge as the British Mk I Lewis, The U.S. manufacturer Savage converted the design to fire .30-'06 Sprg. for the U.S. military as the M1917 Lewis. While it was a bit less reliable than its British counterpart, the M1917 Lewis light machine gun was in U.S. service from World War I to World War II.

the problem with the 30-06 version was the gas port size once fixed it ran good!! you forgot the Madson LMG being available back then and PT boats at pearl harbor engaging attacking torpedo planes with them!!

Prone to jamming, exposed magazine, non interchangeable parts, horrible accuracy, violent recoil, unusable sights, etc... the only reason why the French used it was because it was the cheapest option, plus a lot of French factories and railways were bombed by the Germans

...my first introduction to the Lewis Gun was in John Ford's 1934 flick 'The Lost Patrol' with Victor McLaglen & Boris Karloff that I watched as a y9oung boy with my dad ca' 1954 - '56

I saw a lot of Dutch (Arnold) from Predator in Victor MCLaglen in Lost Patrol. Predator is really kind of a sci fi remake of it. The Lewis gun’s use by him has a lot to do with it in a particular scene as he moves towards the camera as Dutch does with his M16 purposefully exposing himself to danger
